I think they are a little better than "ok"
H&K .45USP All the WAY!
The USP compacts aren't really "compact" either
Hit the range and try a few out!

I have very large hands and small wrists.  I need the added weight to help control recoil. Every compact I have fired, I came close to picking them out of my face/teeth  I also want 10 +1 rounds.

Para-ordnance P-14. You can pick one up over on the EE for $5-600, with a couple of hi-cap mags....

One meager vote for Ruger's humble P-89:
9mm- low recoil, cheap to shoot and reload
Hi-Cap mags are everywhere in 15, 20, and 30 round flavors. Not that I would know anything about the 30"s... And they're about 12.00 -15.00 for mags that WORK.

Go first class and get a Colt Python revolver.

Six inch barrel and polished nickel finish.

Belfry:  What range is that in GA?  I don't get down there very often, but would like to add it to the "cool places to shoot at, even if only once" list [:D]

Hard to go wrong with a full-size Glock like a G-17 or G-21.  Probably get the G-17 first since 9mm ammo is so cheap.

Find the tool that best suites your needs. Fit, feel, point-ability and above all a firearm you can shoot accurately are most important. After that, buy what you can afford and shoot it until you become proficient.
