The benefit to tithing is to the giver, not to God.  The cattle on a thousand hills belong to God, what need does He have of my money?

Not as much as I really should.
That said, it's between me and God.

Anyone who cares what someone else does should stay home.

I've seen older folks and one mentally impaired gentleman who tithe change.
It may very well be all they can afford.

10% is a lot of coin.

That seems a bit excessive.

Anyone have numbers on how much of that money is directly re-distributed to the community?

You should see the heads exploding over some anonymous $17 million donation to Eagle Brook Church.

If you do anything to upset God, he'll send you to a lake of fire to be tortured and to burn and scream and cry and anguish for ever and ever until the end of time. But he loves you and he needs money, tax-free of course.

Sort of surprised to see so many tithers in this thread.

Wife writes a check for $40 every week, and she goes almost every Sunday. I go when I can when I'm not on nights.

10% here as well.  God is and always has been faithful to us.

Your church should be able to provide those numbers for you in their yearly report.

I think the IRS now requires it

Roughly 0.5% of my income.

After tuition, mortgage, insurance, groceries, utilities, returement funding, and gas, even 0.5% is painful. I suppose I could cut down my retirement funding, but then I'd pay a shit ton more in taxes and would be dirt poor when I retire. If my parish wants me to donate any more, I reckon I'll live and eat at the diocese's homeless shelter as my retirement plan.

I respect those who choose to do so. Churches don't run on good intentions. A lot of churches distribute budget breakdowns etc.

I give as I can, every week.

Sometimes it's $20, sometimes it's a few one dollar bills.  Whatever I have as far as cash in my wallet.

I've left churches before when they started printing out in the weekly bulletin who gave what, and who didn't give any...  and I also don't respond to the "mail in a check for 20% of your salary as a tithe" 'requests'.

I appreciate the fact that the church basically runs on donations, but I have kids to feed of my own.

If it's like the ones around here they spend it on bringing "refugees" from some shit-hole South American country here on a visa to steal our jobs.

The damn "fresh off the plane" Hispanic population has exploded in my area over the past five years or so. Fuck a bunch of holy-roller do-gooders.

I have worked in a couple of different churches.  10% of the people give 90% of the money.  I would also say there are a great many churches that do not do much good with the money.

As an example, there is a pregnancy center in town that does honest, good work.  There is a homeless shelter that does the same.  There is 1 church that is their main support, with a little from a new others.  There are 80 churches in town.

Church?

I do not attend church but I believe they have a purpose and a place and if you are a believer you should abide by the rules, 10% of your gross, especially if you are a member.

Fuck that

Churches should be taxed, too.

Y'all can give me your money if you want to give it away and have it do nothing for you.

10% of gross, rounded up, every pay period.  We also give offerings to various people, ministries, needs as we feel led by the Holy Spirit.   This usually results in - 12 - 14% annual gross income.
