We bought Moxie our schnoodle from a puppy store. I had called ahead about a tiny little schnauzer they had and was told they would save it for me. By the time my mother and I got there they had sold it. So we walked around and nothing really caught my eye. My mom however feel in love with the little white hyper dog. We took her out and let her run around. She was so full of energy and just loved my mom. So we got her. Her name fits her well.
My husband(bf at the time) and I decided we wanted to get another dog for each other for valentines day. We researched breeds and fell in love with shelties. Just so happened the local pet store had some. We went just to look but ended up buying Sadie. She was the only sable one and was very calm. She just wanted to sleep the whole time.
Domino is a stray. Our local gun shop owner found her in the turkey woods. She followed him onto the highway and he was afraid she would get hit so he took her. They already had two dogs and we offered to take her. Our best guess is she is half blue heeler half wire haired fox terrier. Very sweet dog.
We adopted our cat Fiona from the local humane society.

Lets see in it's 13 months the dog went through 4 different owners. I'm the 5th.

1st owner was deployed.

2nd owner had to move away were pets were not allowed.

3rd owner got the cancer and could not handle a puppy.

4th owner's dog tried to kill it and the owner was ready to as it had to stay in it's cage and would not quit barking.

I'm the 5th owner (since the first week in July) and we named it Lucky.

BTW....The dog don't shed but I have to have him cut every few months. It's a Mal-Shi.... Maltese/Shih-Tzu hybrid.

My wife's hairdresser was doing a lot of traveling and wanted to give away her Siamese cat.  My wife asked me several times and I said absolutely not.  I hate cats.

One day, I came home and there was a terrified cat in my house.  I was very angry.  I told my wife I wanted nothing to do with the animal and would not be taking care of it.  I remember using a broom stick to push her out from under the bed that night.  I'm not sure where the cat slept that night, but she was terrified.

The next morning while I was getting ready for work, she was purring and rubbing my ankles.  While I don't like cats, I actually do like animals in general.  I bent down and rubbed her ears and had a little talk with her and within a minute or two, the bond was complete.

That was 15 years ago.  My wife still does all the feeding and litter box cleaning and she rarely takes the time to pet the cat.  My son sort of likes the cat, but he is too rough and frightening to her, so there's no bond there.

Today, Abby and I are inseparable.  She's sitting on my lap purring as I type this.  When I go to bed, she perches on my stomach for a while, then goes back to nuzzling up with my wife because the wife doesn't toss around as much.  Wherever I am in the house, Abby is right there with me.  Since I work mostly from home, we're pretty much glued together.

ETA:  This was Abby yesterday snoozing on the job in her office (my monitor shelf):

This one found us the day we moved to the country., The shitheads across the street claimed she was theirs and that she lived under their house.

Day we took her in.

A month or two later, after cleaning her up, and getting her fixed/vaccinated. She was an inside dog a day after finding her.

Last year.

Now she goes to the window a few times a day to say "fuck you" to the dirtbags across the street.

Best god damned dog I've ever met. Even non-dog people love her. I'd clone her if I could.

I found my husky running down the side of the highway.  I pulled over and got out of my truck.  He came right over to say "hi".  I waited several minutes, thinking there might be someone close behind looking for him, but there wasn't.  I opened the door and he hopped right in.  I put up some fliers and contacted the local shelter, but nobody claimed him.  That was almost 10 years ago.

Cat #1.  Picked up from shelter.  Had him two years and got eaten by predator
Cat #2.  As a kitten, it just showed up.  Two years later, we still have him.  When we moved, we brought him to new place
Cat #3  Got him as a kitten from a friend but got eaten by predator in one month.
Cat #4.  Got her from same people that we cat Cat #3 but she went home (50 mile distance) after not getting along with Cat #2 (30 day stay)
Cat #5 and its 4 kitties (Neighbor dumped her and her kittens).  All the kittens got eaten by predator.  Mama kitty still alive and well at the farm.  But not moved with Cat #2 since they don't get along.

Goat #1-7.  Stupid goats!!!!!!  Glad they are gone!!!!!
Goat #8 - little pigmy. Stupid and useless goat someone gave us.  But loved by children.

Dog #1.  Got him as a goat protector as a pup.  Came from good pedigree of goat watcher.  But killed all the chickens and started to steal from neighbor.  Had to put him down.

Horse #1-4.  Stupid horses!!!!!!!  Glad they are gone!!!!
Horse #5.  Rescue horse.  Very smart.  Only took 2 hours to teach her neck rein.

Shelter animals can come with some serious baggage but they sure know how to make you feel loved.

An ex got him for me for Valentines from some piece of shit who had left the whole litter to die in a junk car in January because they weren't pure pitbull. The cock sucker even charged her 50 bucks for a dog he left to die. That will have happened 12 years ago this month, unfortunately he'll never see 13 because he was just diagnosed with cancer today.

A girl about 14-15 was walking around the beach with the last puppy of a litter from down the street. Until she came by I had no idea there were puppys down the street.
Anyway, she asked if anyone wanted a puppy and we took it. I have never been happier with a dag than this. Wonderful dog and a smart as hell.
I will be crushed when he passes.

Got my lab/golden mix through the call in radio classifieds. She was with a semi-local family that does rescues. They had 20 acres with goats, horses, cats and dogs that all had a rough past. The lady had gotten health probs and her husband was short on work so they were giving the "best" animals away. She looks nearly full blooded.

Her first family beat her for a year as a pup and was about to shoot the "useless" dog when they called the rescue family. They took her in for about 1.5 years until she was fully rehab'd. The family said you couldn't tell she'd been beat. This was wrong. I wanted to make her an indoor dog and when we pulled out the broom to sweep, she ran for a closet to hide. Little things like this showed us she was beaten during house training.

She's the best dog ever and is around 9 now. She is 100% and has been for years. Now, we can sweep her and she doesn't even blink much less hide.

As a younger pup

I have a AKC registered Doberman. She was originally selected to be part of a breeding pair, but she kind of ripped the male Doberman's throat out.

She's great with people, but is rather dog aggressive, to put it lightly. That's fine for me though, because I only have one dog, and I only want one at a time. Plus I get a dog who is physically in excellent shape/has a background that I can go through and check for genetic health problems and has been taken care of with regards to shots and all that.

(I think she's a bull-dyke lesbian, to be honest. )

Rescue found out abut it, and took him in. I flew from Rochester, to NYC and then to LA to pick him up, then back in the same day...
He was very dehydrated before I picked him up, and had been losing water (diarrhea) and not drinking; since he's only 4lbs, things can get bad quick.

Took the redeye out of LA; window seat on a full flight. As soon as the plane started to move, with the lights already out and people starting to sleep, he started barking. People started complaining, and flight attendant let me hold him to keep the noise down, so I wrapped him in a blanket and he quoted down. After a few minutes would start to squirm around trying to get out of my arms, and then he had an accident with the diarrhea... and everyone around me would start to complain to the flight attendants again.

This was repeated every 15 minutes... for 6 hours.

Each time I would try to wipe with an unsoiled part of the blanket, but inevitably we were both dirty and smelly.
With everyone next to me sleeping, I could not move out of the seat nor did anyone offer to help. This continued for 6 hours on the flight back to JFK.

We arrived in NYC around 4am, and for the few hours or so we had there we did the best we could to clean up in the airport bathroom, as well as try to get him to eat and drink.
Finally the flight back to Roc took off, but the entire ordeal was repeated as some sort of sick encore.

Concerned about his hydration, I had called ahead and made an appointment to go right into the vet when I landed. When I got there, we put him on the floor so they could see him walk (one of his original symptoms was not very good use of his back legs). He stood up on two legs, and he fell back and with a loud thunk hit his head on the tile floor and went into a seisure...

They took him in and kept him for a couple of days... we finally got him back, and he's seen specialists. He has liver problems, so he's on a special diet, and we've stayed away from the MRI as they told us as long as he's happy and healthy there's no need. If he ever starts going downhill and might need brain surgery, then they would do an MRI. However he's been happy and playful for a full year with no problems.

They were staying/living under a trailer in the mountains.  They are in a pen here but they are alive, have water buckets to drink from, a kiddee pool to stand/lay in in the summer, all the food they feel like eating, treats every day and they get out once or twice a day for a little walk/run/patrol of their terrietory.  Oh yeah, petted, rubbed, combed, etc. and as of last summer - a hair cut to make the summers easier on them.

Wanted a German Shepherd Dog since I was a pre-teen.

Wanted one that I could train to be as kick ass as a Police K9.

Wanted to get one with good bloodlines.

Went to an AKC show for agility. The dog owners there quoted me extremly high prices ($1,500 or so)  for a pup. I didn't have that kind of money.  Saw a Search and Rescue booth at the AKC show being used to raise money for their group.  The booth had great pictures of GSD's that they used for Search and Rescue. My now wife, than girlfriend, and I told the lady that we were looking for a dog.  She gave me a phone number of a guy who works in their group and had done some breeding.  We got the phone number and S&R lady's name for a reference and then I called up the Breeder out of the blue.  He said he was thinking of doing a breeding and wanted to meet us.  We drove an hour to see him and see his Sire and Dam he would be using for the breeding. He decided that we could have a pup in his next breeding.

Seven months went by and after one failed attempt to breed the Dam took to pregnancy and gave birth to a litter of six.  A return person who had taken from a previous litter got fist pick and we got second pick.  We went up to see the puppies at six weeks and the one that seemed to be the most attentive and friendly we picked.  At eight weeks we went back and picked up our GSD for $600.00.

I have a 3yr old Terrier mix that was technically a 'rescue' and technically a 'war orphan'.

The original couple live in Hawaii and bought her from a breeder. The guy was in the Army and shipped out to Iraq, so the girl came over to here with the dog to stay with his family while he was deployed. Then he returned from the war and they went back to live in Hawaii.

But, you can't import an animal onto the islands without it going through a six month quarantine, so the dog stayed here and bounced around within their family, but was basically ignored.

She finally ended up at a neighbor's of my parents and my mom decided that I needed to keep her. So, now she lives at my house, when she isn't busting out and roaming around town.

Got Cleo (the lab in my avatar) shortly after my wife and I bought our house and fenced in the yard.  We found her on Craigslist and she was 75% lab and 25% St. Bernard.  Basically the family dog (full lab) of the family we got her from got knocked up by the neighbor's lab/SB mix.  My wife brought home a pug a couple of years later.  Sent the wife and the pug packing in early 2010 and dared her to try to take Cleo.  I got Cleo she got the pug.  In November 2010 I lost Cleo due to a f'ed up situation that involved blood on my patio, signs of a fight, open fence gates, etc.

I am still looking for the perfect time (work schedule) to adopt the next dog.  It will be a Lab or a Boxer for sure.  Hopefully a mix of both.  Or a Labradoodle.......

Rescues and shelters. Entirely too many unwanted and abandoned pets that need homes for me to go out and pay for one that more than likely came from a puppy mill.
My two little bastards (pic below) were abandoned at birth. The owner put them in a plastic bag at 2 days old and threw them in a garbage can on the side of the road in 15 degree weather. They would have died had it not been for a passerby, who heard their half frozen cries. A rescue took them in, and I adopted them.
