I say Will Smith hasn't made anything good since Fresh Prince. They say Will Smith is an actor of exceptional achievement. Has Will Smith ever made a truly great movie?
He is good in some movies and worthless in other roles. But he is not a "great" actor by any stretch of the imagination.
He has been in some good and entertaining movies. Now, would those movies have still been good and entertaining, or possibly better, if another actor were cast instead of Will Smith is the real question. I think he is a decent actor, but every role he is in he plays Will Smith, and that is the problem I have with him as an actor.

I've enjoyed many of his movies, but I'm not sure I would call him a "great" actor.

He is a good actor within a pretty limited range. Like others have basically said... he is at his best when he is playing your standard Will Smith character.
The only movie I can think of where he did well and wasn't "playing Will Smith" was The Legend of Bagger Vance. |
Great in Independance Day and MIB I. Shitty in Ali, Bad Boyz. Tolerable In the one about the Zombies in NYC. He's inconsistent.
Will Smith is a "movie star".
NOT an actor. He is sometimes entertaining. As long as he sticks to "movie star". When he tries ACTING...he sucks. BAD. |
I've always found him meh. Funny thing is, I thought he was the most real in a superhero movie, Hancock, where he played a drunken superhuman tortured with loneliness, depression, and the target of ridicule.

Every Will Smith movie is Will Smith starring as Will Smith playing Will Smith.
His acting ability has the massive range between nothing... and Will Smith. He doesn't vanish into roles, roles vanish into him. His acting ability therefore is more of a black hole that crushes any and all nuance and subtlety into the singularity that is "Big Willy Style". So is he a great actor? He is great at portraying the near-human that is Will Smith with very tiny almost imperceptible flavors of whoever the character he is supposed to be playing is. So if your movie needs King Lear and you cast Will Smith, get ready for the biggest, blackest, snarkiest, Will Smith-est King Lear the world has ever seen... and try to chain down Shakespeare's corpse so it doesn't spin through the earth into China. |

Will Smith is a very good actor....six degrees of separation...if anything, he has a shitty agent
He's a very, very good actor.
When he gets to the level of Humphrey Bogart or Jimmy Stewart, let me know. |
he's an excellent performer--i enjoy a lot of his movies--but only a mediocre actor in terms of technical ability.
As good as Ashton Kutcher is an actor.
He's no Denzel or Nipsey Russel though. |
Good in MIB and Ali, sucked in everything else, particularly the Wild Wild West.
Trouble with him is you can count down the seconds till he goes all ebonics, every fucking movie, every role, every time: "...an all like dat..." "...dang gurl!..." |
You have to ask yourself.....
Can you do what he does and make the money he does? Nope didn't think so! |

The Pursuit of Happiness was a phenomenal movie View Quote Yes yes and yes. Excellent in this role. Also Men in Black - great Fresh Prince - come on...we all loved that show Independence Day - Beast Mode!!! Hitch - great movie I am Legend - great flick I am Robot - another great flick After Earth - awful Wild Wild West - not good but he was alright. Bad Boys - just no. Too predictable. Too fake. The Seven pounds movie was painful. Have not seen Concussion yet so will reserve judgement. |

No. Tries to be serious, and can't pull it off. What was that shitty Sci-fi movie with his son? Just terrible. He phoned that shit in.

john wayne was another excellent performer who was also a mediocre actor. View Quote In actuality many "good" actors are truly just playing themselves in every movie. Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, the list goes on and on and on. They are all guilty of "person playing themselves". I can really only name a handful of actors who truly vanish into roles. |

He can be a funny comedian but as an actor he is way over rated esp. by himself.
