There goes your advantage for buying a Tesla.

Sure, you don’t pay for gasoline.

But the government is gonna tax you 25 cents a mile...

I mean, yeah, that's an option.

Just be a criminal till you're caught and live whatever penalties are imposed. Might not even be that bad.

One time that car sat and was driven maybe 20-30 times that year.

Dad never renewed the registration as he just forgot, when I retired I noticed it and went to the DMV to fix it.

Cost..$180

Not saying anyone should break laws, just understand it's not that big of a cash burden if it happens (at least for old cars in NC).

Go visit you poor areas in town, look and see how many tags are current and watch the cops smile and wave.

Late fees in NC are $20 a month in NC IIRC.

Driving on a expired tag is a ticket, all you do is bring everything up to date, bring paperwork in a DA usually drops the case and no fine. BTDT.

Courts in our town don't have time to try petty traffic violations, 95% of the time talking to the DA gets it dropped. The other 5% can be taken care of by a lawyer.

With all this said how many small towns that can't even keep up with current court cases are gonna be able to handle gps etc fines cases?

Worst case pay a fine, update your shit and disable it until next year. The older you get the more you can claim you forgot and here is your $100 to leave me alone for another year.

All of the above just makes me laugh when I even think about GPS/odometer shit being enforced.

Actually this makes some sense.  Fuel taxes are used to fund highway construction and maintenance.  Since people are using less fuel, the revenue stream is decreasing.  The model no longer works.  This would be a more equitable.  Right now the guy who has to drive a gas guzzler pickup truck gets screwed.  The guy driving a Tesla doesn't pay anything, yet may drive many more highway miles.

RIGHT???

Like they are going to eliminate the gas tax and just have a mileage tax.

Jeezus H

THEY WILL HAVE BOTH SO YOU GET DOUBLY SCREWED.

Oh they’ll get fucked, but you’re going to get fucked twice as hard with the same tax plus the fuel taxes at 5+ bucks a gallon.

I don’t think you have to explain fuel taxes to me.  Or mileage taxes.

IFTA is a thing for trucks.

This is rather anger-inducing and frustrating. TL:DR - Pete Buttplug and the Xiden administration are looking into a "tax-per-mile" scheme since the requirement for fuel-efficient vehicles is causing Americans to burn less fuel, thereby paying less fuel taxes.

https://justthenews.com/government/white-house/incoming-transportation-sec-buttigieg-suggests-taxing-americans-amount-miles

Incoming Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has suggested taxing Americans for the number of miles they drive, a policy he endorsed as a Democratic presidential candidate.

The Biden Administration is actively searching for ways to fund its ambitious $1 trillion infrastructure plan.

Sad to say, this is just a new implementation of something they've been doing by other means.

Right now the emissions regs are so insane that car makers are having to cheat to pass them while maintaining the MPG by governnment-fiat regs.  This drives up production costs.

You do realize that if this gets functional, they will have to ban all cars they can't track. That means almost every vehicle pre ... dunno, 2010? (telematics standardized around than). That at least two of the hellhole states have mandated all EV by 2030 or so just gives them another excuse (hey who cares if there's not enough of the required minerals in the entire to make the batteries for the u.k., let alone communforina).
