Ummm - forgive my ignorance on the issue, but what do you guys mean "open carry"?  Are you LEOS or is there a state that allows the open carry of a handgun (loaded or not)?  I can just see myself now with my 9mm on my belt being blindsided by a local LEO and beaten with a stick for trying something like that.  Please clarify.

Fuuny this tread should come up.  I had a weird experience buying ammo this weekend.  I was up at a buddies property in PA this weekend.  So we headed to walmart to get all the essentials supplies Food, Drink, Shotgun Shells, etc...

So when I got the counter the lady rings me up and asked if I'm at least 18 ? This seemed to be an odd question being that I celebrated my 24 b-day this month.  But ok, so I say yes.  Then she continues to ring me.

My question is do they have to ask ?  And if they don't why not ask for proof if she thought I wasn't at least 18 ?

Not a big deal but it just struck me as odd being I've neer been ask when buying ammo in NJ. Go figure ?

About 5 years ago, the local gunshop had some smoking deals on .223 and 7.62x39.  $2 a box for the 7.62x39 in the 1440 round old wooden crates and ~$2.25 for PMC .223 when it used to sell for cheap.

On payday all of my fellow "gun enthusiants" at work had gone to the bank and cashed their checks but did not have time to go get ammo.  When they got back I took their ammo orders, money, and the company van.

For these two brothers that worked there, and myself, I picked up for each of us 3 cases of .223 and 2 cases of 7.62x39

For two other guys, I picked up a case of each.

All told, I walked into the gunshop and dropped $2500 in cash on ammo.  You should have seen the looks I got from the customers and employees that day.  For about a year after that, whenever I went in, the cashiers would ask, "you buying all of our ammo today? Hehehe"

Gun_Fanatic, you can open carry in New Mexico, and carry loaded and concealed in your car. No concealed carry outside the car though. Oh, you can carry concealed and unloaded. They say you can carry the loaded mag in your other pocket to. Never felt like trying it out though.

Open carry is legal in AZ as well. I'd rather CCW, though. I've heard you'll get LOTS of odd looks if you carry open.

Hell, I stopped to get gas the other day after a shoot and just had a holster on my side and noticed everyone looking at me strange.  The strangest ammo buy I ever made was in Louisville at a gunshow.  I bought a case of .223 and a case of 7.62x39.  Buddy was packing a case of .223, 500 7.62x54R and 500 .38's.  As we walked toward the door, some dude standing along the wall says to his friend "Well thats about a scary sight."  WTF is up with that?  I didnt think it was that much.

Me:  I want to speak to your manager immediately.

To manager:

This employee just suggested, publicly and in front of other customers, that I may intend to kill someone.

Is it a common practice of Wal-Mart employees to ask customers if they intend to use their purchases to committ murder?

Oh, it was a joke.  Could you please explain the funny part of murder to me?

What actions do you intend to take to prevent myself and other customers being slandered by your Wal-Mart employees while we do nothing more than patronize your store?

Come down politely but hard on these idiots and their passive agressive commentary.  Playing along with their "jokes" is tacit approval of what they are saying: you are a crazy gun person; people shouldn't own lots of ammo; guns and ammo kill people; etc.  You won't change their minds about guns by letting them drive the fight (keeping you on the defensive about the nature of your purchases), but you might at least shut their stupid yaps while ringing up guns or ammo if you speak up.

7  That's a good idea!  I think I'll go to walmart and buy some rope, a skimask, and some ammo!

BTW  I work at an ammunition store (Summit Ammo) and I look at folks funny when they only buy one box of .223!  A case or more is the norm.

I normally get strange reactions, I go open carry. They brains normally lock when I ask them for ammo with a gun in a holster. What was even funnier was when I bought my wife's .22 at Dick's. They had to walk me out of the store with them holding the .22 "because I might freak out and use it in the store" but it didn't bother them that I had a .45 on my side open carry.

Damm, that's funny. Better not let him have that unloaded .22. He might hold up the store with it even though he has a loaded .45 at his side. You have to wonder how these people manage to make it to adulthood without being hit by a bus or something.

They don't have a choice.  It is company policy to escort a firearms purchase out of the store.  It doesn't matter what other conditions prevail, if they fail to meet company policy they can lose thier jobs.  They probably realize just how stupid the rule is, but have no say in it at all.

In my state, to purchase a firearm you need to have a license, either an FID card for long guns, or a License to Carry for handguns, and there are different levels of each of these to cover high and low capacity guns.  To get such a license you must undergo multiple background checks, get fingerprinted and photographed, etc.  So, to be authorized to purchase a firearm in MA, you are a certified good citizen, but they still won't let you walk out of the store with it alone at WalMart or Dick's Sporting Goods or the Sports Authority.  Heck, I'd bet dollars to donuts that many of the store managers walking you out are not qualified under the law to handle a firearm either and may actually have disqualifying convictions on their records.

It's pure liability and those rules are written by lawyers protecting the company's butt.

Anyone here heard of TIPS?  Y'all may be having some fun with the clerk but you may well end up discussing your purchases with your local or Federal law enforcement.  There's no guarantee that you will know the officers called about the criminal/terrorist.

And by the way, UPS  drivers do report suspicious deliveries too.  That was a big component of the ATF case at Waco.  Something to remember when ordering on-line.

The clerks are, for the most part, ignorant.  If you want to save your ability to shoot, you should be educating these people not scaring the bejezus out of them.  Remember that their vote counts just as much as your vote come election time.   If they see shooters as arrogant, dangerous, scarey crazy they will be a LOT more likely to listen to the Chuck Schumers of the world.

Buying Ammo: Walmart Vs. Funshow.

So, a  month or so back, we go to the local fun show looking for some ammo. We find a dealer with cases of S.A. 7.62MM and ask him how much.
Him: For a battle back or a case?
Me: Per case.
Him: $179.
Me: Ooowww. . . Cool, I say. I'll take it!
Him: How much did you want?
Me: How many do you have?
Him: 4.
Me: Ok.
Him: After tallying it up: Ok, anything else?
Me: Yeah, a case of 230 grn S&B .45.
Him: Ok.
My friend: And a 400 rnd ammo box of 30-'06, and one of your 100 rnds boxes of the black tip '06.
Him. Ok. (gives total)
Me: Thanks: (gives cash).
Him: Wanna use the hand truck?
Me: Sure, I forgot to bring one this time.

Now, for wally world:

My same friends and I, are sitting around one fine Sunday morning. We notice we have 4 (100 rnd) boxes of pidgons, and also 4 (25 rnd)boxes of 12 ga. . . . Anyone else see a problem with this?

So, we are flipping through the paper, and notice G.I. Joes has clay pidgions on sale, 3/$10. We also see wally world has an awesome sale on 12-ga. $2.50 a box for any non-steel 12-ga birdshoot, or $9 for 100 value packs.

So, we split up. Myself and a friend go to G.I. Joes, and 3 other friends to Wally world. Here's their story:

They show up, grab a cart, and got the ammo section. They take all the 12-ga bird shot that was on sale. They are dissappointed, they only came up with a hundred or so boxes:-(. So, they ask the guy at the counter if they have any more of the 12-ga ammo that's on sale.

He (late tean kid) say's: Yes, it's on those shelves and points.
My friend replies: No, we got all that, don't you have some more?
Him: Uhh, I don't thing so.
Friend: Are you sure? I know a lot of times you have ammo under the counter.
Him: Uhh, let me check.
Him, after unlocking, opening: Yeah, we have a bunch.
My friend: Ok, can we have it?
Kid: How much?
Friend: All of it.
Kid: You kiding???
Friend: No.
Kid: Ok. . . .
50 boxes or so latter: Friend, any more in the back?
Kid: Umm, I'll have to check with the manager:
5 min later, Kid and manager come back.
Manager: You're looking for 12-ga?
Friend: Yep, the birdshoot stuff you have on sale.
Manager: What type, shot, etc?
Friend: Doesn't matter.
Manager to kid: Did you show them the shelves?
Kid: They already got that.
Manager: Huh?
Kid: Then that took all the stuff from under the counter too.
Manager to friend: Umm, So, what did you want then?
Friend: We were wondering if you have anymore in the back.
Manager: Ummm, let me check
Manager comes back: Looks like we have about 100 boxes or so, how many do you want?
Friend: All of it.
Manager, notices cart full of ammo: What?? What heck are you guy's doing?
Friend: Uhh, shooting shotguns.
manager: I umm, see. . . that's a lot of shooting.
Friend: Clay pidgon problems. . .
Manager: Oh. . . Ok. Wanna bring another cart back??

(At least, that'sthe story I got from them:))

Overall, they got over 250 25 rnd boxes, and about 2 dozen 100-rnd value packs.

Then, for 6 hours, we had 5 shotguns going that afternoon. . . . till we ran outa pidgons.

That's our wally world story.
