She's lucky that battery didn't catch fire being shorted like that.

That way my 1st thought….

My niece called the other day she was a couple of blocks away and her car had just stalled in the middle of the street. I grabbed some tools and hopped over there in about three minutes. She told me that she had stopped for the stop sign and heard a loud pop and the car died and wouldn't start again. I told her to open the hood and this is what I found. FYI the hood was incredibly hard to open for some reason

Yeah...  size, and battery tie downs are both there for a reason.

But way to go on getting the pics!

The hood hit the + battery cable and shorted the connection, arc welding itself to the battery... when you replace that battery (as long as no major electrical components are damaged as well), make sure you get the little boot to put on it. It's there for a reason.

Epic.

well.............................I'll be damned never seen anything like that before

I've seen it before. The insulation started burning, and put a dent in the hood.

Battery they tried to install was too tall.

In the OP's case, no hood liner to insulate from the metal.

Fixed that too I glued a strip of tractor inner tube to the frame where it touched as a backup.

No battery hold down.

My vote too. Might need more than a battery and wire if that new circuit/surge fried something important.

Saw you fixed her right up. Good job!

Such as the alternator, ECU, and various othe electronic components.

Saw a similar situation on a 5 series BMW. The owner took it in for a new battery at a small repair shop.
New battery was somehow left loose and the owner's kid took the car out for a little joy ride. The unit was in the trunk and something wasn't bolted down properly
Battery shorted out and fried every electrical component in the car.

Insurance company totalled it.

I gotta admit I expected to at least have to change some fuses and relays and am really surprised that I didn't have to.

Consider yourself very lucky my friend !

I've seen some stupid/crazy shit, but

I'm really surprised at the strength of the weld... and the fact it didn't burn the car to the ground.

Way to be a good uncle! Send her parents your bill.

I was going with top posts where it needed side posts.

SO that's why battery cables have plastic caps over the positive terminal.

Or run a fiberglass hood.

I really was surprised by the weld strength too. My grandfather was a welder/farmer/cowboy so I know some things about welding (though not how to do it with any degree of proficiency.)
