I hit it.
The fact that the numbers are still 52/48 is beginning to make me speculative. The numbers haven't budged at all. I'm slowly stringing my BS flag up the pole. |

My Alter ego left a comment! What a sissified bunch you've become! I remember as a boy reading British history and admiring the bravery and daring of British Men around the Globe. How small and weak you've become, afraid even to allow people to defend themselves. By the way, nice manipulation of our crime figures! Handgun murder has risen every year since 2010! That would be one year, exactly. The author fails to mention that homicide, handgun and others, has fallen steadily since 1994, excepting 2011, and is now less than half of what it was in 1994. Crime in general, and homicide in particular has fallen to it's lowest recorded rate per capita in 40 years, while gun sales have continued to skyrocket. We now have more than enough firearms in circulation to arm every single man, woman and child, and sales are so high that there are shortages, and no ammunition. Odd that, isn't it? More guns, less crime? But don't take my word for it, see for yourselves. http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/fv9311.pdf |

Stating the obvious but I think it should be said anyway...
The whole knee jerk reaction hand gun banning was in response to the Dunblane school massacre. This was perpetrated by a pedophile who had a 15+ year history of inappropriate behavior with boys through scouting and sporting organizations. Many complaints by parents were made but nothing happened to him. Eventually he was cut off from these groups and his business failed due to "rumors". So he goes and kills what he can no longer have. This raises a couple of points. 1) This guys should have been prosecuted long before it came to this. 2) Had that been done.. I'm assuming he then wouldn't legally be able to buy the firearms. (Prior to the ban, could convicted felons buy firearms in the UK?). And so an entire country gives up its right to own a handgun in order to cover up slacker job local authorities are guilty of doing by letting this whack job walk the streets. Today, would be criminals have an expectation of safety while committing their crimes. To our members across the pond.. am I wrong with any of this? |

Not sure lifting the ban would help. First, they prosecute and jail people for defending themselves. Second, they already removed many of the firearms from the country with their past misguided efforts. They'd have to then allow importation of new weapons. Hard to see that getting past the monarchist subjects. Although, allowing recreational use of weapons for sporting purposes would be a fine improvement, even if they still criminalize self defense. ETA, hit it even though I think it's an empty gesture.

At least in the US, the people who want to ban handguns are considered the small, whacko fringe group.
