And what do you fucking suggest that "they" do with all of the military living on these bases that are not even FUCKING CLOSED YET?
Let's see, I'll apply some common sense for you since you seem to be lacking the common sense that God gave a goat. EVEN if you took 24 thousand evacuaee's and plopped them onto, oh say the closest BRAC base, which is.......Naval Station Pascagoula, Miss. Guess what BRAC base got fucking hammered by the hurricane numbnuts. Even if you took 3 of the closest BRAC bases there would be no fucking way that they could absorb that many people. There is no infrastructure for that. Leasing out 3 cruise ships that have facilities for running water, sewage, food preperation, (limited) medical facilities and, oh yea, sleeping facilities for those people and guss what? It makes more sense to do that rather than build massive tent cities with no running water, sewage facilities, food preperation or medical facilities.

Almost a month today I was getting off the Holiday in Mobile. Its an older ship but sleeps comfortably and has a waterslide haha just what they need

Found this on Google news.... salon
Sept. 3, 2005 | BATON ROUGE, La. -- I got on a bus with California Rep. Maxine Waters Saturday afternoon, not sure where we were going, just knowing we were headed to New Orleans to pick up Hurricane Katrina victims. Even as television news is showing pictures of people being rescued by military helicopters and chartered buses, local and national black leaders are seething at the mismanaged evacuation, as well as the haphazard way even the rescued people are being handled. So they've come up with their own plan: to load the remaining residents on buses they've chartered and bring them to England Air Force Base, a shuttered military installation in Alexandria, La. "My soul wouldn't let me sit and watch this on TV," says Waters, who represents South Central Los Angeles. "I'm just shocked that people have been living for five days, and dying, on the streets of this country. So I came down here, and my friend Cleo Fields came up with this wonderful possibility." That wonderful possibility, hatched by state Sen. Cleo Fields and the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, is to house the displaced residents at the Air Force base instead of shelters and sports stadiums like the Astrodome, many of which are full anyway. They haven't gotten permission to do that, but that's not stopping them. The black leaders say racism is behind both the late response to the emergency and the dispersal of rescued residents far away from New Orleans |

I doubt the pool will be full of water or ANY of the ammenities in place... its a roof over their head and that is all. I am SURE the staff and entertainers will be elsewhere. As I said earlier, put a bunch of cots and beds in the dining rooms and sports rooms I think they are gonna fit a whole bunch of people on there. As far as Carnival goes, I also think that they themselves are gonna strip out EVERYTHING before sending the ships over there... Casinos, Duty Free, stores... EVERYTHING stripped out before they send them over there. Anyone caught vandalizing the place gets charged and kicked off the ship. Simple solution. |
Ya Im sure they will strip them. haha I couldnt believe the amount of food that people ate on my cruise...unbelivable what mobile area poeple can eat |
I gained 40# just LOOKING at all that food!!! I think you have to go anorexic for 4 weeks before a cruise, thatway when you come back you will be back to normal. |
Ya I put on a good 10lbs. I was feeling pretty ripped and lean first day there and then as soon as I saw the awesome buffet and 24 pizza and ice cream SHTF haha still working on it to get it off
What about all the other destitute, FUCKING CLOSED military bases and airfields? |
Not everyone in NOLA owns a car. Not everyone in NOLA is able bodied. Alot of those people are elderly. What about them? Those that made it to the Superdome and Convention Center, chances are they didn't have a car or a way out. I don't see anyone that was evacuated to the Astrodome or other areas of the country "whining and bitching" at the people trying to help them. I don't see how any of you sitting in your cooshy lazy boys, surfing the net, eating steak dinners could be "frustrated" at other peoples misery and I'm willing to bet money that if you were put in that position and didn't make it out of town and you were stuck in those conditions you'd be whining and bitching too. |

A cruise ship really is a better idea, as they are better equipped RIGHT NOW to handle the refugees. Either way, these animals are going to trash their accomodations. Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. Race has nothing to do with it. We're talking about people with the most egregious entitlement mentality imaginable. Sorry dude... |

First, we don't know who they are putting on these ships. It may be the people destroying stuff or it could be the decent ones. MAYBE if we're lucky, the welfare types will see what money can do for you and strive to get jobs. I won't hold my breath for that though. I disagree that they should sleep people anywhere but rooms. That would start fights between the people that have rooms and those sleeping in the ballroom. These are older but still pretty nice ships and I'm sure they will get fed well on them. I think it was the Ecstasy (would have to check with wife) that we were on last Feb. It was a nice ship. I'm pretty sure they'll be trashed but FEMA will have them fixed. Will FEMA repay the last revenues to Carnival or not? Don't know, just asking. It could have the potential to be a good PR move for Carnival. It also could backfire. The ships also have the capacity to feed everyone on board and I'm sure the cooks won't know how to cook anything but great food. They won't do the fancy buffets but who cares. They also have their own security, which will have to be increased, and have no problem with locking people in their rooms. I also wonder if they will have to go through the mandatory CG fire & abandon drill? Might teach some it's a good idea to prepare for the worst.
I would not have done that if I owned the cruise lines.
Those boats will be totally trashed. |
They are housing the refugees in Denver on closed air base hangers. |
Using Mobile is a bad idea.
The place where the Holiday docks is right downtown. No stores, parks for the kids, or anything for miles. Just office buildings and a big stretch of bars. It is also bordered by two rough neighborhoods. Plus, Mobile's public transit is marginal at best. A recipe for trouble, plain and simple. |
I don't want them here in CT thank you very much!
You sure don't know how to read and comprehend.
I suggest calling the nearest third grader to have them read and simplify my response to you.
PS, most of them are not "closed", the ones that are either belong to the city, county or state.
The "really closed bases" don't have water, sewage or power running to them. They are still not set up or equipped to handle massive amounts of people. They never were.
House them at Military bases? We did that at Ft. Chaffee with the Cubans, they trashed the place.
actually i heard last night they may be opening ft mcclellan here in alabama for just that use. It has power sewer and water and the barracks, while old, are still serviceable.
there are many bases that were closed that still have serviceable building and power and water were fed from civillain cities. once uncle sam signs the utillities contracts they could be reopened. |
While I think the cruise ship idea is a very good one. I too believe they will be trashed and FEMA (you and I) will have to pay to refurbish them later. At least they will have running water and a clean place to stay for now.
Of course this does not answer what that dumbass mayor did not take those 1000 or so school buses and move these people out prior to the storm coming. |
Ft. McClellan is the Homeland Securities Center for Domestic Preparedness.
How's that for irony. If the housing units/barracks are in the same shape as the ones at Fort Ord then all I can say is "good luck".
Then for HEAVEN's SAKE USE THE PROPER TERMINOLOGY: They are "LIBERALS" |
Who exactly are "these animals?" When you are thrown into a cage, thrown scraps of food, made to deficate and urinate in your cage, you'd be an animal too. These people were FORCED into the deplorable situation in the Superdome and Convention Center. If you were there, you would be living like an animal too! Callin it like you see it is all fine and good but just realize that you are seein it thru a paper towel tube with rose colored lense...... |
Wait until Carnival gets their ships back............the ships will be in the same shape the Superdome was left in when the natives finished with it. |
Carnival will never use those ships again. They will be scrapped or quietly sold off to South America or somewhere else off the front page news.
Would be interesting if someone in the area could snap a few "before" and "after" pictures... |
Don't get a valid discussion locked (or your account for that matter) with some ignorant shit like that. |
How about taking them up river and plugging the holes in the levy? then they could solve three problems. Get rid of the hole in the levy, a short term housing problem and it would be a nice place to dive after they let the area flood and not rebuild it.
I think the correct title for this thread would be "FEMA BUYS 3 Carnival Cruise Ships"
As stated, the ships are going to be destroyed by the time they're done being "chartered". I doubt Carnival is planning on eating the cost of replacing them. So....I'm betting FEMA (aka, our tax dollars) ends up buying them. |
Your right, my apologies, but some of the other posts are on the edge as well. It was just meant to be a joke Seriously though thanks for the reminder. |
Noboby forced them to stay in NO. Nobody forced them to the Superdome. And nobody is purposefully withholding food and water. In case you weren't aware, we don't have the capability to immediately wine and dine victims following a natural disaster. If you knowingly live in an area that is well below sea level and just waiting to be hit by a hurricane, don't you have some responsibility to be prepared? And when people from around the country send aid both in the form of private donations and federal aid (your hard-earned tax money), shouldn't you be appreciative instead of bitching that it is not enough? How many people are so fed up with this attitude that they have decided against sending aid? |
I think, again this is a blanket statement. Lumping all the good, honest, elderly or disabled in with the bitchers and moaners. An urban city government body doesnt have the means to evacuate it's entire population. This disaster was on a scale unimaginable (by even the POTUS) and you somehow expect a city municipal government to be able to cope with a disaster like this? Those people who weren't able to leave the city pay taxes too. |
No, I wouldn't. I have lived in shit conditions. I didn't loot I didn't rape I didn't shoot cops (hell, I didn't shoot anybody) Don't give me, "If you were in those circumstances you would do the same thing" the majority of the people there didn't do those things. But a sizable minority did and nobody tried to stop them. And nothing but the typical liberal mentaility of blaming someone else. Has the mayor of New Orleans come out and said, "I am disappointed in the people I lead and in myself for the way I have led them?" Why not? Because it is never a democrats fault. Its always someone elses fault. Fuck them. If they won't take responsbility for themselves, why the fuck should I? |

The Sensation was in Galveston right after the hurricane as it was operating out of NO and could not go back. It came into port last week and the passengers were picked up by busses and taken to the Houston airports (I presume). Carnival offered cruises on the ship from Galveston beginning at $99 as they had to do something with the ship.
I think 2 ships are going to be docked at Galveston with "refugees" and I'll certainly post pictures and provide info as it comes in. |
Oh since the Mrs didnt say it I will... when we were on the Carnival ship last week they did these watermelon sculptures that were just AWESOME! and I was AMAZED at the creations these chefs made. Simply awesome! And TASTY!!! |

There is a +1 |

I've got plenty of before for the Ecstasy from this year if anyone can get the afters. I do hope they either lock up or get rid of all the liquor first. |
They really should be sending in retired oil tankers and freighters. Cargo ships with many freight containers on them, ladders for access, and chairs and cots in the containers. Transport thousands, and if it gets nasty...so what? Carnival will be impressed at how funky their ships will be before this is over. They may have to scuttle them afterwards. Aren't those ships all withdrawn from regular service, anyway? CJ |
I know the Holiday was dry-docked in Mobile shortly before Katrina hit, don't know about the others.
Nope, all up and running. People's tickets being refunded as of now... See the links posted on page 1.
Hopefully that includes a heavy duty disinfectant wash down too. |

While I (mostly) agree w/you. In that no one FORCED them to LIVE NOR STAY in N.O. And no one (to my knowledge) is PURPOSEFULLY witholding food and water, the bitching _I_ heard started at day 3 or 4, and my guess is that if YOU had had no food or water in 3-4 days... you'd be bitchy too. MAYBE this will teach them to be prepared, maybe not. Just don't know. MOST of the folks I saw seemed to have had NO plans for disaster. And while I certainly sympathise, IMO, they are MORE "to blame", for NOT getting out. Now, I know I heard at least one report of college students who were TOLD by the college they attended that the college was "making arrangements for them", then that college said, "Oops, you're on your own". So I think there are dumbasses, those who were not well informed/not paying attention, folks who figured it would be "no big deal, so it floods a foot". (In fact, I'm seeing a LOT of that). And some very ill/infirm folks who SHOULD have been taken via BUS SOMEWHERE. Myself, I'm a firm believer in BOTH "redundancy" AND having plans, backup plans and backup, backup plans. Though this has me scrambling a bit to re-work some of those. |

The Navy could use them as target ships.....after they are emptied of course
