FAL with an Aimpoint and a Malinois, I'd take on some poachers with that. http://www.gunthings.com/saFALpara2.jpg No doubt. I like my chances when the ROE goes out the window and the Mal gets to eat.

I'm an M1A/M14 guy, but that rifle is NICE. Makes me want to go build one just like it and lug it around through the mountains.

It's neat that these rifles are still giving sterling service, but if you're going to put a red dot on there, make it an Aimpoint Which Aimpoint do you plan to use? Supposedly the Micro will cowitness with the irons if you use a top cover fitted with the Light Tactical Rail. Not sure about the other offerings. So will a TRS-25, thread over at FALfiles on it now....http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=380983 I'm not sure yet. I have quite a few Comp M2s and a few Comp M4s on different guns due to using them in the military. I like them quite a bit. I do have a Comp ML2 laying around in a A.R.M.S. mount that isn't being used that I could pull the spacer out of. I really like the Comp M4s though due to them using AA batteries even if the optic is on the bulky side. I'll probably use the ML2. You guys would laugh at the carbine the Para lower is going on. It is a complete mutt with mostly Imbel parts on a Century upper receiver that has been extensively reworked by a buddy of mine that is a FAL freak. It has been in his possession for the past couple of years at the shop and he tinkers with it when he gets bored. The upper was way out of spec (Century Arms, go figure) and the barrel was cut down to 16" at some point from rifle length and the gas port was buggered. He remilled the upper and replaced the barrel with what looks like a DSA version with the built in comp on the end. I am going to have way more money into the new Para lower than the rest of the gun as is. He went above and beyond to get the upper functioning as smoothly as possible. It really is nice even though resale is crap being a century lower, but who cares as long as it works? Lord knows what I am going to owe him. Hookers and blow?

Calls for secret serial location and Lower, upper and barrel serialed. 700 units over 4 years with option to increase to 1000 units.
Word from the field is 2 poachers Kia in a contact using a new Dsa rhino rifles, the Rangers get trained by former special task force members, a friend of mine drew up this spec based on what he had in the police, I did the barrel shortening gas port tuning for him back then, guess he payed it forward. I can not disclose price but based on quanity it is well below retail, hidden serials are for theft and is a big problem. I have considered offering this spec with custom serial in US but been busy with some other cool projects. They did not consider any other system as most of Africa is full of Fals, they love them and just do not want change, cost is a huge factor. The color is used to identify rifles if stolen, I did not give them the green hand guard option but may send them in future So far this contract is all paras, Kenya buys the fixed stock 18 inch barrel. This continues to be one of the better FAL threads I've seen for quite some time, on any site. Why? Because it's contemporary. |

The barrel is cut to around ~11.5", just enough to get the barrel length to 16.25" with the DSA long browning flashider. To be honest I have yet to shoot paper past the 100 yard sight in distance with it, so I can't verify the 2,3,4,5,600 etc.. meter graduations. I do primarily feed it 168gn Amax reloads which is the bullet weight the graduations are calibrated for, but the velocity is off with the shorter barrel so I assume the graduation may not coincide perfectly. The rifle gets the nod every year for deer season, the heavily forested land (north west WI) where I hunt doesn't have too many stands that offer distance shots. one example below. I do like using the illuminated chevron, I prefer using the sharp point of the chevron to edge up to the target/POI rather than placing a dot over and covering the target/POI, works well if using at distance or shooting paper. http://www.pcbwerks.com/pics/para_deer_stand.jpg Quoted:

Has anyone seen the VETPAW facebook or website?
Good veteran organization looking to prevent poachers from completely wiping out entire species. I actually would like to see their populations high so as to see a return of big game hunting again, but right now that's just not possible in large part due to the damn poachers. |

Out of curiosity, what is the benefit of going with a short barrel and long flash suppressor like that over going with a 16" barrel or a longer barrel (but under 16") with a shorter fixed muzzle device? To be honest again it was purely aesthetics and visual appeal. Adam762 posted for sale a few short gas "carbine" barrel offering for sale and noted he could build them for anyone. I liked what I saw and asked him to build me one, I like the compact front end and short hand guards. I do have a NFA trust and have been debating form1ing it into a SBR. I have a Saker762 in NFA jail that would mate up with it if I threaded a Trifecta flash hider on the end. It would bring total barrel length with suppressor to around 20". But my limited research into suppressing FALs has it that they are not the best of suppressor hosts. |

If money were no object, what would y'all prefer in terms of magnified optics on a FAL?
Elcan Spectre DR? ACOG TA-33-C? ACOG TA-11-C, TA-11-H-308, TA-11-E, or TA-11-J-308? Something else entirely? I'm wondering how usable the reticles on something like one of the ACOGs mentioned or the Elcan would be on a FAL, especially one with a shorter barrel, such as a 413mm, 436mm, or 458mm barrel. |

Quoted: Dammit I need a FAL. Hopefully I can afford one before all of the good ones disappear. I mainly want one for a collector's type piece, so something with a USA barrel doesn't really appeal to me. |

Some more info on the rifle in the picture with the dog:
May be one of our [DSA] early type 2 we sent them a few years back for evaluation, early ones were fixed stock due to export restrictions at the time, lower probably Belgian or modified by armorer. This is the exact configuration they now order, minus sight mod.
We...don't ship with NBC handguards [or grenade sight gas plugs] but I bet the barrel and type 2 are more than likely ours. We have NBC barrels and that is what we shipped per the spec. |

Good idea. FALs are cheap, reliable, easy to fix and needed for the longer ranges of Africa. Part of the reason, too, is that while still not ideal for many animals that may be encountered, full-power cartridges like the 7.62X51 are at least more capable of dealing with animals that can be a danger to rangers, as opposed to 5.56X45 and 7.62X39. The Rhodesians also found the 7.62X51 to penetrate cover in the bush better than those other two cartridges. |
