I had a inch pattern rifle too... While I miss the hell out of it... I just couldn't afford to feed it! Would LOVE another FAL but... I don't want to stock and spend the coin on another caliber.

I had a inch pattern rifle too... While I miss the hell out of it... I just couldn't afford to feed it! Would LOVE another FAL but... I don't want to stock and spend the coin on another caliber. I just sold mine for that exact reason. 308 is still over 50 cent a round. I cant afford that. |

Great pics, being a Game Ranger in SA looks like a very cool but tough job. They prefer .308 over 556 since they have a need for protection against 4 legged and 2 legged targets. I would sure like to do that but I don't think I could keep up with those lean fit guys. Sad that it's more like combat not conservancy.

Rhinos charge at everything. Those guys would get squashed along with the photographer. Exactly was I was thinking when I first saw that pic. I suppose it's possible, though. You'd think if it was a "decoy", it would at least have a horn or two to look attractive to poachers. If that rhino's real, those rangers must have some sort of magical ability to hang with unpredictable wild animals without getting randomly killed. |

To paraphrase, life in the bush was accompanied by interaction with wildlife, whether in the form of foraging for chow (meat), or defending oneself from things that bite. |

However, I *think* that's a "Para" model with a 436 mm (17.17 in) barrel. It looks pretty close to an FN FAL Model 50.63. Somebody with more knowledge please correct me if I'm in error here. Note the Type II receiver (Google it, and you can learn the difference between the Type I, II, and III which is what I had to do), and how it's cut for the carry handle forward of the ejection port, although in this case, it doesn't have the carry handle but a simple washer of some sort to fill the gap instead. For mounting the Aimpoint, the rifle wears a DSA Arms M1913 railed receiver cover that you can find here The handguards are standard, which makes the rifle sleek and ergonomic, but you can fit a railed handguard such as this if you wanted to take the concept of this handy rifle a little further. The rest of the rifle looks pretty stock, and frankly, very user friendly in the configuration pictured here. DSA offers Para models with both 16" and 18" barrels, but I haven't found anything with a 17.17 in barrel. Still, a DSA with 18 in barrel and standard handguards looks close enough to me 
Like I said, I welcome anyone with more familiarity with metric FALs to please correct any misinformation I may have passed here. ETA: The rifle is also equipped with a grenade launcher site which is integral with the gas plug. It folds back along the top of the handguard behind the front sight when not in use. ETA2: Also just notices the rear sight isn't the standard Para model protected by the "ears" commonly found on Para FALs. I wonder if this was even a standard production model? |
