Matt Damon's Elysium Is an Action Movie for the 99 Percent

The director describes Elysium (out August 9) as "a science-fiction take on the haves and have-nots and the separation of wealth," and Matt Damon stars as one of those have-nots, a former car thief living in a slummy future Earth studded with smoking skyscrapers while the pristine space station Elysium looms up above, a beautiful paradise for rich one-percenters that's patrolled by a severely ponytailed Jodie Foster.

Producer Simon Kinberg promised that Elysium would tackle "immigration, health care, and class issues,"

Sounds like MSNBC politics combined with SyFy channel film making.

Blomkamp spoke to journalists following a trailer debut/footage presentation at the Hollywood Arclight on Monday, and while he didn't shy away from discussing the thematic content of his movie, he rejected overt comparisons to modern-day movements like Occupy Wall Street.

"Hopefully [the Occupy movement] didn't impact it at all," said Blomkamp. "I think if there's topics that are just on people's minds, things manifest into reality - the global consciousness being aware of those topics. Separate from the [Occupy discussion] and everything, I was thinking about this, and the film grew out of that. I remember reading about Chris Nolan trying to film some Occupy movement thing for the end of THE DARK KNIGHT series - that could've been horseshit. But that was the first time I realized that I was making a film that, in terms of global consciousness, fit into a CNN soundbite, and that upset me a little bit. I don't want them to be fast food that you can throw away, if that makes sense."

Blomkamp believes there's a way to invoke important issues in major studio tentpoles, but it's a tricky proposition. "I think that in the realm of commercial popcorn cinema, the amount of message or smuggling of ideas that you can get in there is quite limited," said Blomkamp. "If you think you're actually going to make a difference or change anything, you're on pretty thin ice. But you can put issues in there, and ideas formulate out of them. If I wanted to make something that made a difference, I'd make a documentary."

I'll probably be depressed if it actually happens.

I'm sure it will bear as much resemblance to the original as the up-coming two-part Akira does. If you haven't read about it yet, look it up. What a travesty. It might even be a decent movie, but is won't be Akira in anything BUT name.

The "freedom fry" shit is turning me off to this movie more than the "privileged" BS and Jodi Foster.

I'll grant that it looks to be action-packed, but one can get that from Micheal Bay, too. That doesn't mean it will be GOOD.

Honestly, I expect the  leftest messages from Hollywood, but this trailer is overt with them, even for Hollywood. Yeah, I know they have a message. Just don't try to ram it down my throat in the trailer if you want me to go see your movie, in a year packed with stuff I want to see in the theater and in which some compromise has to be made.

Never called anything "Freedom Fries", but with competition being what it is this year, trailers that annoy me probably aren't going to translate into me spending dollars to see said movie in the theaters. Better marketing might have been a smart move, on their part. I'm sure they'll still make a pile of money, even without me. Good for them, if they do.

I think I'm one of the only people I know that actually liked D9.

That tells me I should expect to hear it sucked pretty regularly.

Anymore, It's pretty rare that I go to a movie, too. With prices being what they are, I do not generally go to any movie I think might suck. I wait for Netflix on those.

I just think the over the top hyperbole about the movie and director is ridiculous.

Yeah, as a conservative, am I super stoked that the movie is about rich vs. poor?

Not super stoked, but I understand it's a movie and it's probably easier to get funding for a populist film.

The Purge is way more anti-Conservative/Tea Party yet I have yet to hear the Marxist rants about it.

I'm going to go see it, if it's a total OWS strokefest, I'll let you guys know.

If it's a kick ass, rated R, gory sci fi epic with some class warfare sprinkled on it, I'll let you guys know as well.

Heh.

As a Conservative, I'm shit on 24/7 by the MSM, Hollywood, TV, blah blah blah.

I get it.

You just want to see a movie without political overtones, and if it does have it, it'd be nice if it wasn't anti-Conservative.

I totally feel you brohams.

But I'm reminded over the over the top rhetoric regarding the movie Iron Giant and that it was anti-gun, anti-hunting, blah blah blah when I hear people going off on Elysium.

Everyone needs to lighten up and actually see what the movie is, not what their preconceived notions of what it will be.

Is that all you have is fries? Pictures of fries and mention of freedom fries.

There is a difference between D9 and this movie. D9 wasn't blatant about its agenda.

"Synopsis
In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission—one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces—but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well."

Yes all movies have a message and many of them are leftwing messages, but if your selling point is to put them in the trailers then its obvious you're going to go overboard in the movie about it.
