Take this information....
And combine it with the info YOU provided:
That is quite eye opening. That plane on a single engine trying shoot an approach on one of the "highest airports in the world" where "it's always hot and humid"......It doesn't sound like something you grow old doing. That thing looks like it will bite you hard if it gets half a chance. "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there aren't any OLD BOLD pilots." I know that saying has been around for many years, but it has stuck with me since Major Thomas B. "T-Bone" Moore said it to me. He had over 5000 hours in F-4's, and I believe he knows what he talks about in that regard. I've attended way too many memorial services for young hotshot pilots. D(ThePhormerPhantomPhixer)Peacher |

How about a LET 410? Great performance and reasonably priced. They can be had for well under 200,000, far cheaper than a Twin Otter. The engines are virtual copies of PT6s.
And you'll have no trouble getting paid work on the weekends hauling jumpers. www.planecheck.com/

what is wrong with me? i keep looking at GD and misreading this thread as DON'T DELAY! SAVE TATJANA SEX FIGURES

For posterity...
Last time someone asked here, poll said Ford, they bought Dodge. Life with sisters has taught me when a woman wants to talk about something, she is gonna get it. Good luck young lady. |

Airplane, Smairplane!
Buy yourself a motorcycle; You can get your ass just as f*cked up or dead at a cheaper price. Then pass the savings on to us..... Everyone wins! |

RUN FROM THE AEROSCAR! We have a customer that had TWO engine failures in less than one month in his (low time engines) and literally put his flegling air charter operation out of business. If you must go fast, a King Air 90 can be had for more money up front but higher UP time in the long run. The Aerostar is by far the biggest hangar queen I can think of for a piston twin. Planerench (A&P IA) out.
Reasons! John Denver, Thermon Munson, Speedos Onassis, Leonard Skynard, Richie Valens, JFK JR & many many others.
Private Planes are too dangerous |
Kind of tough to motorcycle form one island to the next... Aeorstars are very touchy critters. Find something a bit more forgiving. |
I've grown partial to Pilatus, of course, they are not piston driven, but I've rethought the need for an executive jet when these are available.
Of course, I'm not in the market for either, at least not yet. |
Also, there is an AD on the Garmin 330 transponder. Software problem. They all have to go back to Garmin. Planerench out.
Rich people who are pilots only because they have money, are dangerous. |

<Sigh!> |

I think you may remember I'm in the aviation biz. Get a King Air. Every once in a while they come out of the Gov. Mainly thru GSA. Most have good airframes but need engine work. But you pay way less and get a well maintained aircraft. Great safety record. Or, go the full whack and get an Aero-Commander twin turbo.
this is a good thing for you to get
an arfcom logo, and a minigun mount will make it all better and get rid of your reservations about buying this |
For the same bucks or less you can get more airplane in the LET or cheaper operating costs in a 208.

people have too many ideas of which aerial projectile would be better for this or that, i say lets test em all, beginning with the ballistic gelatin test first
Why an Aerostar when you can fly Aeropostal, the finest airline in the hemisphere?
tat,
while i dont have that kind of money to play with, i would avoid turbocharged airplanes. if you just gotta have a twin why not a smaller reciprocating twin like a commanche or a baron. personally i would get a high end single like a mooney or cessna P210 with de-ice. if i had your kind of play money i might even consider a Caravan. its the ultimate flying SUV as far as im concerned. if you buy it can i use it for my MEI??? |
A king air is at least 200% if not 350% of the price of the Aerostar I am looking at when quite old.
The C90B will suck down 88 gallons per hour at 249 kt at FL 200. The Aerostar is half that for the same speed and ceiling. Single engine service ceiling (50 fpm max) is 16,000, that's quite enough to handle the terrain here. (And very amazing for a light twin). I need a light twin. Medium and heavy twins are just too much plane. I've looked at barons. They are slow and expensive and suck a lot of gas. They aren't pressurized (unless you get an old 58P). I need a little zoomer to get me and MAYBE two others around. I am not married to the Aerostar but I have put over 40 hours in a different one and I am really happy with them. I HAVE heard they can be hangar queens. That's ok, so am I. ;) I don't mind nursing a picky carbine or a picky sports car or a picky jeep. I'll nurse a picky plane any day. It's a labor of love. Their reputation as hangar queens is somewhat at odds, however with the many "round the world" records the plane holds. (See: www.earthrounders.com/meunierstory.html). I think part of the key is taking the aircraft you are given and going over it with a fine tooth comb first. Loaded costs with the Aerostar is around $300 an hour, maintenance included. King Airs are easily double. Purchase price is around $300,000 for what I want. A 1974 (!) king air E90 is $500,000. I'm not financing and will be unlikely to get the aircraft insured. (I doubt any insurance is even available down here). I can be talked out of it, if another plane with similar capabilities is suggested for about the right price. Anyone? |
Oh, and whatever I get will get an AR15.com logo on it. :) |
No ceiling. Not pressurized.
Engine failure almost certainly = death. Nothing but water and mountains where I am.
This is a possiblity. They are highly expensive, however, in comparison. (300% - 400%) and still only single engine.
HEE! |

six figures? how far into six figures?
I like the Grumman Goose with Turbo Prop conversion .... 250kts, seats 12 ... around $900,000 |
Yeah, but for that kinda money you can get a Ferrari and pick up hot chicks.
Wait, that's my fantasy. Plus, I'm a guy. Oh well. |
You're going to paint a big weiner on the side of your airplane? |
Probably hydraulic fluid. |

Ok guys, she is just waiting to hear the magic words...
Don't do it...for the CHILDREN!! Unregardless of your decision, stay safe! I have every intention of meeting you someday at a shoot or some such, you and Piccolo, are my idols. But seriously, be safe. ByteTheBullet (-: |
Aerostars are awesome planes. Just remember, don't open the door with the left engine running.
Nursing along a picky plane is far more risky than nursing along an old jeep.
Please take a second look at the King Air if you MUST have a fast twin. Even though the initial costs may be higher, I imagine that you will be saving money in the long run, and you will be sitting in a safer seat. If I wasn't tied to a twin, I would get a Mooney Bravo or a Cessna Stationair depending on your uses. |
$200,000 higher!
Yeah, I can't afford total powerplant loss though. |
How about a Duke? Don't know about the costs but the performance numbers are close.
I'd hate to see you spent tens of thousands of unnecessary dollars to maintain the aircraft. Cirrus SR-22 has CAPS. That makes emergency landings in the mountains or water with an engine out a lot safer! (I'm trying to talk you out of it you know ) |
Tat, what do the local pilots fly and recommend? What would they recommend as an upgrade?
I dont know shit about airplanes...
but it is interesting to watch someone decide what to do with the equivalent of 2 years of my income. |
The Caravan was the first single-engine aircraft to be certified for night VFR passenger/commercial in Canada due to its reliability factor. The RCMP traded their DHC-6s for 208s and service in the arctic.
99.8% dispatch reliability factor.
For what passes for commercial down there, by all means get your own plane and enjoy!
I'm with you Lumps, except it about 150 years of my income. |
I don't know if I'd take airplane advice from captainpooby..........he jumps out of perfectly good planes for fun |
This is exactly the point, yes.
The key is not to TRY TO CLOSE the door if it opens. SLURP. Right into the left prop arc.

fly to CA and bring ARs and full-cap mags.
note: breaking the law is bad ju-ju. |
post pics of it |
er, what do you want to do with the plane?
is it for business? pleasure? I would figure that out first and then go find transport to meet the mission, rather than falling for something because it is fast or cool. sorta like sensible shoes, I suppose... (unless fast & cool is the mission, in which case I would get a sensible plane and a hot boat or something... ) |
Cherry Kool-Aid. |

Mission requirement: IFR and known icing capable light twin (medium twin not necessary) for 150-1000 nm trips (frequent trips of 850 nm) with up to 4 or 5 passengers (6 overkill). Substantial overwater (ocean) and overmountain operation including high altitude takeoffs and landings (up to 13,000 ft, home airport is 9,550 feet) in warm and humid climates (Up to 105 degrees, high humidity). Pressurized (operation over 14,000 common). Useful load: at least 1500 lbs. Capital budget for aircraft plus improvements: $350,000. |
Please Tatjana, Post a higher resolution picture. There is a little pinkish smudge on the right side of that aircraft and I want to take a better look at it. |
You state a trip range of 1000nm, if you get there and they are socked in, how much further is your alternative? (thinking of max range and also conditions of secondary airports - unimproved or otherwise) I would be thinking reliability (1st) range (2nd) & ruggedness (3rd, if landing in fields and such) Performance (rate of climb, etc.) would be way down the list, but that's just me (boring, but just because the idea of running out of gas over the ocean or being in a twitchy vehicle in dicey situations doesn't excite me as it did in my younger & more foolish days) Seriously, I would do a spreadsheet (range, payload, ceiling... everything you can think of, then just check of the stats of possibles - things usually self-select when enough data is present) good luck |
what are you thinking!!!!!!!!
if god wanated us to fly , he would have given us wings. if you really need to spend money, send it my way . i'll put it to good use.... beer ....beeeeerrr.....beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr. meat |
