Letting out my dags and...as usual...they are taking their sweet time. I whistle for them once or twice and my little dachshund comes and runs inside. But as I have my back turned something whistles back (mimicking me) from the blackness. WTF? I grab my spotlight and shine the 7 acre field across from my house as my other dog comes inside. I also light up the tree line to my right-where the sound originated. It sounded like it came from the trees or the pond that is hidden from my view by some very old oaks. Interesting facts: My dogs did not bark...either when I turned them out or when the whistle occurred. They usually announce their charge into the night when I let them out. They also bark like mad at people. The whistle happened fast and had volume. It sounded-different-but not like a bird. I live in a large gated subdivision that is surrounded by mountainous woodland and farmland. There is only one other house in here and all other houses are a good 1/4 mile or more away There are street lights 400 yards away at the main entrance, but everything else is pitch black. People do not trespass here in my experience as everyone in the area (rural road) is very armed and very assertive. They sure as hell don’t whistle at you at 2 am without announcing themselves. Something was in my pond that night. The algae was displaced like something had walked out into the pond. (Bear and deer do this often) The frogs-for once-were also silent So... At first I thought it was a bird. Until I listened to calls of a few mimicking birds online. (Plus my own outdoor experience which includes many many nights deep in the woods) Then...I thought it might be my buddy’s son out frog giggin, but I asked him and he hasn’t been in three weeks. Now, I don’t know. What do you think? I’m not losing sleep over it, just thought it was interesting. Is there is a bird in East TN that I’ve overlooked or is it time for some concertina wire? TLDR: something whistles at me out of the woods and creeped me out a little. |

+1 on bigfoot or skinwalker. Baba Yaga is a possibility, too. If in the South, maybe a Skunk Ape. More likely it's ManBearPig. Got night vision? If it mimics your whistle again, see how it reacts to gunfire in its general direction. Be sure you're behind cover when you do, in case it returns fire. |

Possibly the story below may answer your question?
First of all, I don't know if anyone here has read the book "Strangely Enough", an old book from about 1959 dealing with paranormal encounters, it has many good tales in it. (All stories gathered from the people or their families). One story is about a woman in the midwest and a whistling. I can remember most of the story but I can't seem to find the book. Heres what I remember: The woman was home alone with her dog, and went to bed. About halfway through the night she woke up to her dog barking and a horrid whistling coming from her front porch, where the dog was barking. The whistling continued (painfully loud and high pitched) and soon she grabbed her pistol. Before she dared to go the porch, her dog stopped barking and started grunting and whimpering, then went dead silent. The whistling left the house quickly and faded off into the field. The terrified lady went back to sleep. In the morning she cautiously went to the porch, noticing her dog was not by her side. She found the dogs blood smothering and smeared all over the walls and no sign of the dog except for some fur (If I remember correctly) as if something very strong had come into the house and mutilated the dog while making a horrid unnatural whistling. This part is the odd part. I've never heard an account like this ever again until today. Im not going to post any personal information, but a friend told me about an experience after I asked him about if he had seen a ghost before. He used to live farther in the country by a huge field. Strange things had been going on in the barn and he had even been thrown against the wall by an unseen force. Later on he had been attacked while out in the field when it was turning to night. He had nothing but a hunting knife with him but was trained with a sword and fighting. He got thrown to the ground by some beast that was whistling and kept stabbing blindly as he closed his eyes. He got away and ran inside his house, with some cuts and he was covered in some sort of black and bile liquid. Later on he had to keep himself locked in the basement at night when he sleeped in fear of being attacked again but walked outside into the field every night to see if it was there, and it was. It kept whistling (like the one in the first story) and his friend and him got a glimpse of its body. It seemed to have many thorny spikes coming out of its muscular back and had unusual reddish skin with large muscles. He did not see the rest of the body but his friend said he it 'billions of teeth' (He was watching from the barn) It whistled as it ran off at amazing speed on all 4's and the whistle faded off quickly. He did that for nights carrying his sword and it whistled more. His parents didnt see it and saw what they thought was 'a bear being chased'. They moved and he only saw it once in the town alley, whistling painfully loud and high, doing some sort of song, then it left and its been gone ever since. Has anyone heard of a whistling menace that is unnaturally strong and fast? I really want to find out as much as I can about this menace, please post feedback. |

Mockingbird maybe? They can apparently make all kinds of noises.
When I worked at a hotel in Columbus, there was one that hung out in a tree in the parking lot mimicking a car alarm. At least I'm pretty sure that's what it was, never actually saw it and didn't want to spook it. |

I used to trap coyotes.
I had a place near a woodpile around 600 yards from the house that I put leftovers/fishguts/deerguts for months and let the critters eat. It worked great as a funnel for the coyote/foxes to come in for a sniff. Caught a bunch of yotes/foxes and then I lost a trap. Then I lost another trap. I anchored the last one so good I don’t know if I could have pulled it with my ATV. Two days-gone. I figured bear...as there is sign and I see them all-the-time, but this was winter. The ground was hard and all I found were coyote tracks. This perplexed me. I stopped trapping there and I stopped putting out food in the off season. |
