We get these calls all the time, and the phone is NOT always where the GPS shows it to be.
And yeah, we aren't gonna get a warrant over a stolen cell phone.

Better things to do like sit at the doughnut shop and play bad ass cop with the counter girl? Maybe file some union grievances on the side.

Maybe even calling the phone number and see if a phone starts to ring inside?

Or they get the warrant and the GPS is off and they hit the wrong house and you righteous fuck heads bash them for that.  New thread "Cops hit wrong house over wrong GPS hit and kill a dag."  Fuck off.

Maybe you should talk to your politicians about funding more LEO positions then, if you want a certain level of police services.

In all seriousness, after seeing all the issues with police around this country.  Maybe we should talk about de-funding LEO's.  It seems like cities/towns would be just fine with parking enforcement to generate revenue.  Let the citizens police themselves.

Police forces exist because the population in the past said they weren't willing to do this sort of thing on their own.
We have people calling because they can't walk across a hall and ask a neighbor to turn a stereo down; what makes you think they'll willingly handle more serious things on their own?
What about the people who CAN'T fend for themselves in a society where the strong eat the weak and it would spit them out.

My cell got misplaced during a medical procedure.  I wasnt quite out of the drugs when I requested my phone.  Left it on the bed on a friday in my stupor.  the sheets were stripped and tossed into a bag.  GPS confirmed it was at the doc's office when I realized what had happened.  office was closed.

fast forward to monday, my phone is on the move.  I call the police, file a report.  Dispatch tells me when I get close to the phone to call them back and they will send a patrolman to my location.

my phone ended up in a laundry truck which a coworker and I tracked all over town.  called the police.  they showed up in about 10 min, talked to the driver.  driver allowed us to search and I was able to find my phone.

they thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Major Kudos to Marietta PD and the driver.

You seem to think the earlier thread was about abusing paid or volly FFers.
It wasn't.
It was about a homeowner who wouldn't remove himself from a dangerous situation, who ignored LEO instructions and ultimately found himself tased.
There was nothing in that thread about FFers being tased.

I would be kind of suspect on the accuracy of a typical cell phone GPS.  I imagine it might be the right street beyond a doubt, but could be off enough to get the wrong house.  Don't know about that particular street, but many houses are only 10 to 20 feet apart, so wouldn't take much error to get the wrong house.

Something similar happened to an acquaintance.  Their car got stolen.  While bitching about it to neighbors, they discovered this happens all the time.  They were told, "oh, X works near here and doesn't have a car, so he often steals one to drive home.  It'll be parked at Y."

Incredulous, they checked it out and sure enough, there was their car.  They called the police to report the location of their stolen vehicle and the thief.  The cops wouldn't even come check out the car, much less gather evidence or arrest the notorious shit bag responsible.

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma City family is out hundreds of dollars after a burglar targeted their car Monday.

But just by looking at their computer screen, Debby and Cory Cannon saw where their stolen goods went.

“It’s just a helpless infuriating feeling when you know exactly where your stuff is and there’s nothing you can do about it unless you want to sacrifice your safety,” Debby Cannon said.
She said someone stole her purse, wallet and her husband’s phone from their car sitting in their own driveway.

Little did the criminals know, the phone they stole was pinging a signal back to the Cannons, showing their location in a neighborhood on S.W. 38th St.

The family had just downloaded a GPS tracker on their phone that allowed them to see where the thieves were located.

Officers knocked on a door where the phone was showing up but got no answer.

The Cannons said officers told them they need a warrant to search for their property, and with these cases piling up, they say that could take time

No, more like answer other calls for service, which would be piling up deep in the hours it would take to get a warrant over a stolen cell phone that in many cases is not where the GPS says it is.
I had to walk all over a golf course green about a month ago on one of these calls a month or so back with a guy and a wife whose cell phone was pinging stationary on the course. It wasn't there and we combed the area for almost an hour before giving up.

Of course its not, but around here even if they are arrested and even if they're one of our regulars, I bet theres a 50 50 chance it gets shoved off to drug court and dismissed after all parties involved have performed the appropriate amount of hand-wringing. So they aren't going to spend much time in jail, and while a few days worth of crimes might be stopped til they are bailed out using the taxpayer-funded indigent bail fund, it wont be anywhere near hundreds of future crimes. They'll be back at whatever their crime of choice is as soon as they're back on the street.

Too many times the phone company has given us ping data only for it to turn out wrong... you're not going to get a judge to issue a search warrant on iffy cell ping data.... has nothing to do with being "lazy" as some seem to think.

I spent almost two hours one night chasing tracking data that was being given to me by the victim.  After getting tired of the rat-race, I had the victim meet with me... the results, we ended up waking up an elderly couple that live alone.  BUT... the ping data said the phone was there.  After that, I lost most if not all faith in cell phone ping data.

For those bitching about "lazy cops", I'd love to see YOUR responses if YOUR house was searched by a warrant issued off iffy cell phone ping data... think about it.
