Ok so im visiting my dad in wisconsin and he said that he was going to take me on a bus trip tomorrow to see chicago. I told him that Arfcom has been posting photos of desolate barren towns with houses falling down and burned out cars in the street. He said that i had to be crazy and must be thinking about detroit.

Which town has been the central attraction of arfcoms scorn for the past few months.

It was the one that showed the abandonded police station.

At least people travel to Chicago because there's an upside.

Definitely Detroit. The abandoned police station was actually in Highland Park, a small city completely surrounded by Tha' D.

Detroit is the absolute KING of "messed."

I would rather have to walk through Fallujah or Mogadishu than walk through Detroit.

I'm not kidding.

ETA: I know a former Wayne County Deputy Sheriff who has reliably told me that there are parts of Detroit that even the police are afraid to go into.

He wasn't kidding either.

Chicago is actually a pretty cool city. Detroit is a shit hole.   Let me put it this way,  I live in a suburb of Detroit and my son lives in Chicago. I would rather drive 5 hours to Chicago than 20 minutes to go to Detroit.

detroit

homeless people wont even go live in some of those big old abandoned houses, it is not safe enough

i have almost been carjacked 3 times there

seen people get shot at

been there when people shot into a crowd

the cops avoid certain areas, they know better

the thieves even steal live electrical wires from the poles, strip the siding off of houses while people live there, a cop was killed so a crook could use his gun in a robbery

Detroit.....  nuke it from orbit, it is the only way to be sure, then rebuild something nice on top of all the glass

Detroit is by far the biggest shit hole.  If it wasn't for the Tigers and Red Wings, the entire city should burn like Chicago did in the past.

How many dead bodies do you suppose they would find if anyone ever really cared enough to start checking out all the abandoned, derelict houses and other buildings?

We're probably better off not knowing.

It's a sad shame too. Detroit was a kick-ass city up until the early sixties. Then the '67 riots fixed all that. I didn't live there until '76, but wish I had been alive in the '50s to see it then.

I have only seen the car-related stuff the "D" has to offer(met some arfcommers too)...but I'd like to go back.

Chicago has nice touristy stuff and downtown isn't a shithole but at least people in CCW states can CCW in Detroit.

Detroit is so bad that the wilderness is starting to take it back over, places that used to be suburban and semi urban have started to look rural, the wildlife is creeping back in.

I have read that the median home price is $18,000.

All things considered, Detroit is worse for more reasons that how dangerous it is. But make no mistake about it, in vast swaths of geographical territory within the City of Chicago, they will rip your throat out out of sheer boredom.

Have you ever been to either?

Chicago is a modern and rather safe city (Sure it has bad areas like every city on the planet). It is basically a mini-NYC. Detroit is an economical disaster, a 3rd world city in America. I've been in Chicago twice in the last week, I was at Wrigley Field last night, great area other than all the savage Cubs fans, being one of two people wearing a Brewers shirt in the entire stadium is a lonely feeling .

Detroit!... WHAT!

ETA... Go to Chicago.  Stay downtown near the river.  Tour Michigan Ave. It's actually pretty nice.

Yes, it is a shame.

I remember Detroit in the 1960s.  Believe it or not, there was a time when it was one of the most prosperous cities in America.

I also remember the Detroit riots.  You can find my "1967 Detroit Riot" thread in the archives.

You are correct in that it was the '67 riots that doomed that city.  That was the turning point, and it has never recovered.

While Chicago is full of hippies/Obama lickers/troofers and numb-nuts, it's actually a pretty cool city.

Detroit is a cesspool of filth and violence with virtually NO redeeming qualities.

Detroit its more and more abandon by the day.
I don't know how it will be with Detroit/southeast MI emptying out
But I always liked Detroit over Chicago and MI over IL.

Better music came from Detroit

Detroit.

To its credit, Chicago still has some outstanding institutions.  Chicago Museum of Science & Technology (home of U-505), Oriental Art Institute, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Pritzker Military Library.  The Pritzker does a lot of author talks as well as Medal of Honor Talks and panel discussions which are stored online and are FREE!

Are you sure about that?

10.25% sales tax

no CCW

no class 3

literally no guns allowed, (IIRC, no EBR's, no handguns without a permit issued before 1983)

Only way I'd take a job in the city or really have anything to do with it is I'd live in Indiana and commute via train.  Northwest IN is close enough to the city so you can make your money, but good enough that you can live your life as an average ARFCOMMER.

Detroit only really has good professional sports teams (except the Lions)
