I never used mine as a safety, I used it to decock the hammer and then flipped it off again. I had a model 59 though, OP's may not work the same way.

Count me as one of the guys who would. The S&W 4506 is one of my all-time favorite handguns. Accurate, reliable, and durable. They are vastly underrated handguns. Heavy as hell, but that just makes it more fun to tune somebody up with.

I've worked on quite a few Smith autos, I worked for a department that issued two different kinds. The ones between the M59 and the M&P are crap. The XXX and XXXX arent' quite as bad as the Sigmas but they really do suck. If I have to use an old Smith auto give me a 39 or a 59.

For some reason most 4566 models are decock only, while most other smiths are decock/safety

See MR. Wayne hear is a dying breed, he knows these 3rd gen S&W ruled the holsters of I bet 75% of Police officers in the 1980's through 1990's who carried auto guns

They're outstanding pistols.  I have a 908 that runs like a champ.  Surprisingly soft-shooting, too, compared to most 9mm+P compacts.  The accuracy isn't fantastic, but it's more than good enough.  I love the trigger.

Other than that, what can you say?  It looks good, so there's that, and the construction is rock-solid.

Oh yeah, and they're only $300-400 on the used market, depending on model.  Put that in your 1911 pipe and smoke it.

I would. The 4566 is one of the few 3rd generations I'm still missing.  I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Firearms do not "jam."

They have stoppages or malfunctions. Anyone that uses the term "jam" when talking about firearms might be to ignorant to safely own and use firearms.

1.  Really?  You're really calling someone "to ignorant"?

2.  Use of the proper terminology is important when it can cause confusion, but I don't believe anyone would ever understand a "jam" to be anything other than a malfunction.  Further, "jam" refers to a specific kind of malfunction, so the term arguably communicates more information than your alternatives.  This isn't like improper use of clip vs. magazine, where the terms refer to different things; it's more like referring to a slide as serrated vs. grooved.

Highly under rated pistols. I love my 4506. I would like to pick up a nice condition 4566. Most of the haters have never even fired one. It is much easier to regurgitate internet mythology than to go out and actually shoot the real deal. And yes, I also own two Colt M1911's, and my 4506 is the better shooter.

They're OK, I guess.  I had one a few years ago but just couldn't seem to grow to like it.  I stuck with my 1911 instead.

For my money if you want a .45 get either a 1911 or a Glock.  There, I said it, either one is a good fighting pistol.

Goodoleboy, I had a 5906 (a different animal , I know) that I put untold thousands of rounds through. It ran like a top ALL THE TIME. There's a lot of Smith hate in this thread, but don't worry about it. Enjoy the new gun! I would maybe have an extra extractor handy, though. Hopefully you won't need it.

my rock island armory 1911 tactical has never failed me.   round count is probably around 750-1000.  i attribute the reliability to the gun not being super tight in fitting and metalform 7rd mags.

Yeah that is pretty pathetic. People who are that in to proper wordage are typically collectors of comic books, WoW enthusiast and VERY VERY single.

I just find it amusing that the OP justifies his purchase (not because it was within his price range) but rather because it's a superior design to the 1911.

It'd be similiar to my trying to convince you that the Sigma was every bit the pistol as a Glock.

thank you.
I want a 1911 but afriad to get one that it seems they are more bad makers of 1911's than good..I dont want a super cheap one, but dont want a high dollar gun either..Seems the 1911 has evolved into a piece of shit by some makers, and some kept it reliable..Not sure as the expsensive brands I hear are crap and the cheap Rock islands are more reliable.Im so damm lost in 1911 shopping I get headaches when even thinking about it and getting advice will run from users of cheap Rock islands to guys who insist a $1000 gun will be the only reliable 1911's..
One day though Ill own one

See it as you may..I am not justifying my purchase by saying its superior..If I did hint at my gun being better, if I did it was a ole rub at 1911 owners/brothers..We all are owners of .45acp's see the brotherhood child bickering us .45 owners go through? Since you think I am serious I assume your post is serious as some have already pointed out.Relax man, its a gun, they will be many more coming in and out of my life..Just have not got to the 1911 quite yet. Live and laugh buddy

Any post of superiority was a Joke/rub to other brand or type of .45acp's.

Let me get you some of that vasoline I have on my desk in the first pic for the "dry skin condition", to loosen you up a bit!

I've got a 4553 TSW, 1076 and a 3913.  All are Glock type reliable with any ammo, accurate, built like tanks and have excellent sights and triggers.  In fact, the 4553 TSW, which is my daily carry, has a DAO pull that can rival the better S&W revolvers I've shot and own.  Of course it's starts at around 1/3 cock, but it's still light and butter smooth.  The worse thing about the 3rd gen S&W guns is how hard it is to get holsters and accessories, S&W just made so many different variations that no holster maker has all the proper blue guns.

That "lever thing" is a de-cocker. Beretta, Sig, HK, Ruger, Smith, Walther, etc  all have them in one form or another and I' d like to point out, they sell very well.

Sucks to be so incompetent that you cannot train yourself to flip a little "lever thing" .
