Cancel that AR500 order and go to Spartan Armor. I ordered their armaply swimmer's cut plates last weekend and it arrived yesterday. Those guys seem to be the best in the steel plate business. I just got a set myself, for the money and weight, best steel plates going IMO |

It appears that the shooter was indeed wearing armor. Reports are that an officer was able to score a pistol hit on the shooter while his back was turned, shooter brushed it off, turned around and shot the officer, and finished him off execution style. Quoted:

Did these shooters have armor? whats the panic here about armor about? It appears that the shooter was indeed wearing armor. Reports are that an officer was able to score a pistol hit on the shooter while his back was turned, shooter brushed it off, turned around and shot the officer, and finished him off execution style. no expert, but yes, that's what it looked like. No clue what pistol DPD issues, but 9/40/45 being slow, the armor did exactly what it was supposed to do. I was surprised he actually had armor, as the media always reports "armor" for chest rig with mags. Firing that round alerted douchebag to his location and finished his life. I'm all for them blowing him to Allah/Malcom X/whatever. |

The affordable Highcom stuff isn't noticeably lighter than regular AR500 level 3/ "3+" stuff, and the lightweight AR500 "3+" stuff is probably lighter than the affordable HighCom LV4. I own both.
I would look at the best in AR500 from Spartan Armor/AR500 Armor, because it will probably be lighter and provide roughly the same amount of protection now that coatings for steel have been sorted out and tested. The "3+" designation isn't a blanket NIJ standard, but it does have certifications for performance for threats under a certain velocity - and they often stop threats beyond their certified velocity ratings. That puts the best steel armor as capable of stopping pretty much all common rifle threats. Some on this forum argue that steel manufacturers can't possibly produce repeatability in performance across numerous production runs because of the nature of steel manufacturing, and therefore don't trust the steel armor products to perform up to their claims. There's really not much arguing that. However at this point there's a LOT of anecdotal testing that shows steel armor stopping a lot of threats and even outperforming its own manufacturer's claims. But, if you want tried and true NIJ LV4 protection, HighCom Guardian 4SAS7 is tough to beat. |

Has anyone heard of Bulletproof it armor?..http://www.bulletproof-it.com/
I picked up a couple of their large level 4 plates awhile back. They seem very well made. I got the 4400 series. They are based out of Washington state, and were making the rounds at gunshows for awhile, but have not seen anything lately. Would also like recommendations on plate carriers as well, Don't care about price/ Eta: just looked at the website and noticed the price on the level 4 plates at 200. |

I don't know, but that package is a great deal at $310. The plates alone would be $318 without any discounts and the plate carrier they include is listed $119. $119 for a US made PC is a great deal, although I haven't read anything about that carrier other than the all positive reviews on their website. I don't understand how the plates + carrier is cheaper than the plates alone, especially since it isn't a foreign made carrier, but if I was needing plates and a carrier I would FO like a MoFo on that. |

You full upper body coverage like SWAT guys? That vest weighs a ton. If you want full upper body coverage for pistol rounds, the kevlar is pretty light but doesn't breath. It's like wearing a down winter vest in a sauna when its hot outside. |

If ~8lbs/plate + a carrier is "a ton" to you, you should be worrying about other things shortening your life before a bullet does. |

So would this kit be a good one with the 4sas7 plates? http://highcomsecurity.com/collections/plates/products/personal-defense-kit?variant=19417959236 Yes. Even if that plate carrier isn't what you're going for, it is $8 less than buying the plates alone. If you want a Pig Brig or Banshee or 6094 or whatever you can easily sell that carrier for $50-75 on the EE and put the money toward a different PC. There may be some discount codes out there for Highcom right now that would make that kit even a better deal. |

I have some experience with both steel and ceramics. Definite preference for ceramic armor because of the weight. You can feel a big difference between the Multi-curve shooters cut level IV plate from Highcomm and the level III plate from CATI. Steel plates by themselves weigh you down pretty good, add in a bunch of spare mags, first aid, and maybe water. You likely won't be able to move around very long or very well if you are wearing steel armor and a bunch of other gear. The ceramic plates I have worn feel much more manageable.
That isn't to say steel armor is a bad option. It's great in terms of price. Probably the best option for a back up/ loaner set of plates or if you were buying multiple sets. The weight wouldn't be as much of a problem if you were not moving around very much like in a defensive position. |

Bulletproofme has level 3+ AR680 lightweight stand-alone plates for $145.
They work fine against 7.62x39, .308, and 5.56; both M855 and M193. Listed as stopping M193 at 78' from a full-length barrel. Says 3200 FPS, so I'm guessing they mean a 16" barrel. 7.2 pounds, half-inch thick, coated for spall. Offered in multiple sizes, including SAPI cut. They'll stop multiple hits, though I recommend using a soft armor backer when running steel plates. They also have stand alone level 4 ceramic plates at around $140 per for standard, along with more expensive lightweight options. ETA: For plate carrier, I highly recommend the AWS Operators' Choice. |

Whats the latest tier 1 soft armor? I have a PC setup but don't have something IIIA that I can wear concealed. $1k would be the budget. $1k will go a very long way. Thinness and arial density level (comfort) is where your money will go if you're talking IIIA armor. I like kevlar woven material over the laminates like spectra or dyneema. |

Any recommended brands? I liked US Armor when I had one, KDH is good, Point Blank, etc. Lots of price points, mainly based on what I described before and the materials used. Straight kevlar will be least expensive and heaviest by a bit, but I trust Kevlar more than anything else. All are good, IIIA is IIIA no matter how you slice it. Also ask yourself, do I really need a IIIA? A Level II should suffice for everyday needs, and it will be more comfortable than a IIIA. |

If you shop sales, you can generally get ceramic level 4 plates for not a whole lot more than steel. I bought mine from Highcom Security during a special for 125 a piece. I think they retail for 150 or so. DSG just sent out an email selling a set of steel/titanium for $200. As far as plate carriers go, there are many good quality plate carriers that are not that expensive. 100-150 should get you a perfectly functional plate carrier. I got mine from Tyr Tactical on sale for 125. It has really nice padding. I wore it all day long for two days in a carbine course, and it wasn't too horrendously bad. Steel is even heavier than the cheaper ceramic plates. |

Friends don't let friends buy steel armor. I agree. Highcom 4sas7 is a good plate, as long as you understand it is smaller than 10x12, even though they call it 10x12. Also, they will demand credentials to keep on file. Midwest Proguard IV is a good plate and is 10x12 actual and zero hassle with purchases. BulletProofMe has good options as well, with minimal hassle. Stay away from steel (just my two cents - not trying to stir any shit). |
