Give us a $500 bill.

That will never happen,  to easy to move large amounts of cash around.

I can't think of too many places where one would do cash transactions large enough to require a $500 bill. I personally refuse to carry that much cash on me at a time.

However fractionally, it raises the prices on all goods. This helps nothing and gives the govt. another instant tool to create insant inflation, sucking more value out of your purchasing power.  If our government can't mint coinage that holds its "value", there are obviously alot more problems with that currency and credit than whether or not it should continue making a particular denomination.

Obama wants to get rid of the penny. I'm OK with that for two reasons.

1. I can't remember the last time I used a penny. I pay for all that I can on the credit card as I earn miles on it

2. I'm hoping all that freed up copper can go towards brass for ammo so supplies will increase and prices will drop.

People here cool with this?

Did you ever read the story about how Rockefeller made a fortune by using 21 drops of solder on barrels of oil instead of 22 drops?

Workers were using 22 drops, he came up with a scheme to use less and saved or profited in the end simply because he was selling millions of barrels of oil.

The velocity of money in the US when pennies are factored in add up to millions. I imagine those millions are made for states in sales taxes... Or corporations with a high velocity of cash sales business.

How is it possible to get rid of the penny?  If tax wasn't a % of price, it would be possible because everything could just be rounded up or down but because tax is a % of price, you absolutely have to be able to pay x1, x2, x3, x4, x6, x7, x8, x9 cents.  Can't do this without the penny.

You have that expression backwards. "A penny saved is a penny earned."

% changes also make for tenths of cents (like gas). How do we currently get by without a something smaller than a penny? We would just start rounding to the nearest tenth of a dollar rather than a hundreth of a dollar.

If the penny gets phased out...how do I get my .04 cents?

The military has been doing it for years overseas.  It's not rocket surgery.

In 1988 and 89' I never saw a penny in Germany on base. Everything was rounded to a nickel.

Know what?
Didn't even miss it.

Pennies are a waste of money.

Gas is priced in tenths of a cent.  Have you ever ultimately paid in tenths of a cent?  Do you think you were robbed?  Do we need 1/10 cent coins?

Hell, just quit spending money making the damn things.  I consistently see pennies from 40, 50, 60 years ago... they'll still be around for our great grandchildren.

And BTW, I very often don't mess with pennies when running the register at my store, and I always round to the customer's favor.  I did some rough math, and on a really, really busy day it might cost me a dollar.

You do realize there is almost no copper left in the penny? It's zinc with a copper coating.

There are some people who are hoarding old copper pennies, but they can't salvage them for copper until the .gov makes them "not money" anymore.
