But, that senario would fit in with the notion of, "stupid poiliticians" wanting to get their way over most everything in our lives. As if......AMERICANS are too stupid to check tire pressure? But then, I could also imagine that some lobby group (be it the TPMS inventors or the auto makers) paid them off.

I've talked to far too many people asking what the "Horseshoe with Exclamation point" light on their dash means, even when looking at the car you can tell a tire is half flat. Most people don't care which warning lights on the dashboard are lit as long as "The car still drives", no matter the amount of noise made.
What seems like a majority of people just keep driving it until something breaks so bad that the car doesn't go any more. They then get very pissed that the repair bill is 2 grand because of the cascaded failures they ignored since the car would still run and drive, just with a bunch of warning lights on the dash.
I don't think the government should have mandated TPMS, since that forced some very hinky implementations of it, but if manufacturers had put true gauge pressure monitors on all tires (the right way), and people pay attention, it would save a lot of wear and tear on cars, tires, and breakdowns from a tire finally going all the way flat. The extra mileage thing is just a bonus.
