While relatively unknown, Purple Hearts also starred The Gunny.
I liked it. It's not a bad movie-but probably not on par with some other choices. |

Go to YouTube and watch the making of Platoon. Pretty crazy how the cast was made to live and eat like soildefs would in the jungle back then.

Out of those options Platoon is the clear winner. Tom Berenger was fantastic in that movie, as were many other actors. It has aged well to boot.

We Were Soldiers.
Go Tell the Spartans. One of the best for the early period. |

We were Soldiers needs to be on the list. One of my friends is a retired army Colonel who served 3 combat tours in Vietnam, one advisor, one infantry, one special forces. He has seen pretty much every Vietnam movie ever made, and tells me We Were Soldiers is the most realistic. He says not perfect as he can roll off a list of small technical errors, but he believes it catches the feel of the early-mid war period when he was there on his second tour.

I like Apocalypse Now just for the Air Cav scenes, it's kinda boring after the village raid IMO. For Vietnam to have been the helicopter war, Apocalypse Now and We Were Soldiers were the only movies to really incorporate them at all.

"Hamburger Hill."
Absolutely hated "Platoon" and that POS Oliver Stone. |

In that pole, I'd say Apocalypse Now. Missed some greats (already mentioned), including We Were Soldiers.

I bought 317th Platoon and then donated it to the local library. It's that good. Best review I've seen. Directed by Pierre Schoendorfer, a Dienbienphu survivor, and photographed by Raoul Coutard, who shot "Breathless" (the real one, Godard's) and Truffaut's best films, this is in every way the best, most real and gripping filmed drama of the Indochina wars ever made. It was photographed in glorious black-and-white on location in Cambodia. If you were a combat veteran, line doggie or LRRP in Vietnam this wonderful movie will resonate with you. The little details are there, sounds, faces, jungle rivers, all of it. If you weren't there and want to know what it was like then you should purchase this film. No other film comes close to the understated realism and gritty reality of Schoendorfer's masterpiece -- and I've seen them all. This is a true masterpiece of the war film genre and the best "Vietnam movie" ever made. Trust me. https://www.amazon.com/317th-Platoon-Jacques-Perrin/dp/B075RVGLD3#customerReviews View Quote Some screen shots for those who haven't seen it yet: |

Voted Apocalypse Now
Can’t vote Platoon because: Oliver Stone Go Tell the Spartans with Burt Lancaster should be on the pole |

Was also going to post. Good for chicks to watch as well and has Cheryl Ladd in it (Nice!). My Plt Sgt was a Vietnam vet, served 18 months in a rifle platoon near Da Nang and used to say it was his favorite. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:
