wouldn't it be wiser to land the dern thing in a soft field rather than on a hard run way?  Patty

I'm not sure you'd want the front gear to be able to dig in. That and I don't think there is a "soft" runway long enough.

Humm...you'd think with the American Sierra Desert not too far from LAX that would be a safer spot.  Difinately more room too, but what do I know?

No emergency gear or nearby medical services, but if Fox is able to milk this any longer...

With the nose gear in an unknown state, they CAN'T land on anything soft.  The nose gear will dig in.  The nose could break off at that point, or maybe not.  Either way, the plane will cartwheel all over the sky, breaking up, scattering parts and bodies, and burning.

On a hard asphalt runway, they will coat it with foam, land as slow as possible with a high angle of attack, and wait as long as possible to set the nose gear down.  This will get the speed down as much as possible.  When the gear comes down, whatever else happens, at least it will slide down a slick hard runway with spark/fire suppression.  They may lose control or break the plane, but no cartwheels hopefully.

I'm not familiar with the geography, but the other factor is the emergency equipment. You want to be able to put a lot of foam down fast. LAX should have the needed equipment/resources.

One more thing, they said they'll perform a landing where they slow as much as possible using the rear set of gear that way there will be less stress on the front gear. For that, they say, they'll need a long runway. LAX has a 12K ft runway.

According to my Mac's flight tracker flight 292 is flying at 227 mph at 6100 feet.

They also say it is 12 minutes early.

Landing into the wind at LAX, about 6 pm or so.  Still holding over Catalina.

It's on KTLA 5 , the primary commentator is a long time pilot so we aren't getting the typical talk out your ass bs you get on some channels.

Looks like they are lining up lots and lots of emergency vehicles.

You WANT a hard surface. A hard surface is better/preferred.

Hard surface... airplane slides parts break off… and just maybe the body stays in one piece.

Soft surface... airplane, gear, engines, wing tips dig in soft surface... airplane tumbles breaks into pieces and results in fireball.

Soft surface very bad.

I think I would rather go with a gear up landing.
Rather than a nose gear at 90 degrees landing.

A crash landing near ambulances, fire engines, EMS, and hospitals would be preferred, dontchathink.  5K feet, now.

And the Fox news asswipe never heard of foaming a runway?  Please, God, when the aricraft touches down may we have a live shot of a 300 pound nose wheel decapitating a reporter?  In trade for the safe return to earth of the aircraft? Please?

It can't have been the pins or they couldn't have turned to taxi to active. They would have known the instant they pushed on a rudder peddle. Must be worse.

They have a steering wheel, but result would be the same! Once saw an RJ that got loose while being pushed back,RJ going out of control backwards, not much pilot could do 'cept sit there and wait for A/C to reach upslope of ramp!
