A man who relies on others for his protection is both a fool and a coward. A man who takes on the responsibility of having a family and relies on others for his protection is immoral. My first question would be how did he know; were you printing or did he just happen to guess because he knows you're a freedom enthusiast and you told him? You mentioned that you and the GF have a 2 year old; maybe he's looking for ways to get back at you for rawdogging his daughter without marrying her first. |
| I am guessing he did it in front of other ppl to try to shame you and make himself feel in control. Also, did he spot you carrying the gun or did he take a chickenshit route and ask your son or wife if you carry a gun? IF you take the kids there you should just stop at the front door. If you get along with him then sit down and explain why you carry a gun and the fact that you are willing to defend your family. |

Different and probably unpopular opinion: I usually check with the owner of the home if they mind or not, the first time I visit. I am glad to lock my gun in the car if they decline. Everyone has a right to be comfortable in their own home, whether or not they agree with me on personal defense. |

Having said that I can't think of a soul I visit who would come apart if they saw my concealed carry. |

Quoted: Went over to my girlfriends parents house tonight. My oldest son (7. from a previous marriage) and I dropped off my youngest (2) at their house since he's staying the night. My girlfriend was sent to the ER last night and had to have her gallbladder removed. She also has a good size stone that needs to be removed that they couldn't get today. She goes back in for surgery tomorrow to get the stone removed. My parents are taking my oldest back to meet his mom in the Seattle area tomorrow so I can head to the hospital. So, sitting on the couch at my gf's parents I hear her dad mumble "jesus christ". Wasn't sure what it was about but whatever. Told everyone that I needed to get going and stood up and picked up my two year old to give him a hug and kiss goodbye. Girlfriends dad, a man who never says a word to anyone hardly, says; Gf Dad: "David, do you have a gun on you?" Me: "Yes I do." Gfs Dad: "Don't ever bring a gun in to my house again." Me: "Ok. Didn't think it was an issue but I will respect your wishes." Gfs Dad: "I just don't want that in my house." I wasn't really sure what to say. Caught me off guard, but the way he said it in front of every one, really pissed me off. Especially in front of my seven year old (he knows I carry). Girlfriends mom and sister were there as well. I left shortly after. My son and I get into the car and he says "dad, that was awkward". Yes, yes it was... He knows I carry. Knows I have guns in the house and has never said anything about it. I don't outer carry and always make sure my shirt is covering. I was carrying a P365 so nothing huge and barely notice. Just left me with an uneasy feeling. I know, CSB. Shit on his porch |

Quoted: Cut him off, as much as possible. Fuck that guy. You're with his daughter, not him. In-laws should be seen and not heard. Wait in the driveway if you need to drop off or pick up the baby. One of the better answers here in the thread. However, you need to be sure that his daughter is on the same page with you about this. He's treating you old school though. Knock up my daughter and not marry her? I wouldn't really have any respect for your wishes either, especially in my home. |
|
I'd try to continue as you have, OP - provided his daughter is worth future shenanigans. Drop the kids off/pick them up at his door, though. When asked why you won't come in simply tell him (them) that you are always carrying, so you're respecting his wishes by not bringing a firearm into the home. Simple. No need to be shitty about it. Just state the facts. I'd also suggest that ALL holiday gatherings and celebrations will now be at your house and you'll be armed there too. They can come if they wish (or not). |

Sage rule: Never bring a gun onto someone else's property without their expressed permission beforehand. But if you feel truly compelled to violate that rule anyway, at least leave the gun in the vehicle. I know that sounds dumb, given the above-zero chance of vehicle theft, but again, you just don't violate the sanctity of someone else's home like that. |

Quoted: Here's a different perspective He's not into guns which is clear, so he was probably in a state of disbelief when he noticed. He may have overreacted out of shock. If you plan on having a normal relationship with him, you need to evaluate the threat you would be facing by not having your pistol with you and how far you would keep it away from you (car) Do you carry at work? Anywhere else that you don't carry? Everyone needs to choose based on their own convictions, but there are plenty of places that I do not carry, that are probably higher risk than at someone's house that I know. Ug...I see you are from Illinois, how often do you roll over for those who would have you roll over. Leaving my pistol in the car is not an option that I’m comfortable with. Illinois is one of the most restrictive states in the union, but I realize even the criminals leave their guns outside in the car because of the No Guns sign in the window /sarcasm off. OP was basically ordered out of the house, because of the Dad. Tell the criminals to leave their guns outside, while they are in the process of a home invasion. Yea, I get it not everyone outside is a criminal with a gun, Can you spot the guy carrying a gun who means you or your family harm coming down the street in his minivan. |

Quoted: I don't know what you were thinking either? Have you watched the news much lately? Have you looked out your window? Because your advice will get him red flagged these days. Quoted: Quoted: Yeah, actively promoting and working toward a firearm friendly society is a shit idea. I don't know what I was thinking. Just go back to doing the boomer thing, OP. Continue being silent about gun ownership so non owners continue to believe we are far and few between. And if you're identified as a gun owner, be sure the act brash and irrationally to justify their current stereotypical beliefs. Because your advice will get him red flagged these days. ETA: I'm a gen x'er and your advice is terrible and not thought out. You will get somebody locked up or defenseless if you keep it up and somebody actually believes your nonsense. so the answer is hide? I may get red flagged? that idea is what the anti gunners want, slowly go away, cower, be scared. I guess it depends on where or what region you are from. I was @ a funeral yesterday. guess how many were open carrying? there were a few, more were tucked. and nobody cared. its the same thing @ stores and other public places. common. and its not a rural area. people that are afraid to exercise a right are NOT helpful. you know a right not exercised is a right lost? that idea. |

Been with my SO 9 years and I don't know if her dad knows I carry. He might, knowing that I'm a gun guy, but I've never mentioned it and he hasn't asked. He's a super lefty from NJ. Thankfully, it's been years since I've been to his apartment. I wouldn't be back. |

Remember that it isn’t about the gun, it is the lack of respect he shows that drives you away from him. If he can’t act decently then you and your daughter don’t want to be around him. Don’t make this about protecting the family or not feeling safe without your gun. |
|
To all of you replying, keep in mind he lives in a state with a red flag law. For OP to say “I won’t ever go in his house again, but I’ll continue my life like normal everywhere else”, he has the possibility of FIL calling in a “red flag” on him at any time, possibly just for spite. That’s the danger of red flag laws being abused. Just the fact that any state even has a red flag law is abuse of our constitutional right. Now 18-20? states have red flag laws! Where I live is far from perfect, but our state is the only state to have an anti-red flag law. No city, town or municipality in OK can pass a red flag law, and its against the law for a red flag law to be passed for the state of OK. |

His house, his rules. However ... He could've tactfully pulled you aside and asked to please not bring a gun into his house again. To blurt it out in an authoritarian style would've been awkward. I would've been pissed. You took the high road, which is commendable. I probably would limit my visits, but honor his wishes and leave it in the car ... ANY other time he was around me outside of "his house", I would blantantly wear it open. |
Just woke up. Didn’t think I’d be waking up the five pages! ![]() Since some have asked how I was carryIng, here it is; Was carrying my P365 at the 4 o’clock position in a Vedder light tuck, with Claw. The only thing I can think of is that my t shirt rode up and rested on the grip to where the gun became visible. I’m assuming that’s when he saw and mumbled “Jesus Christ”. I’ve carried over there for years. Never once have a taken the gun out or even mentioned that I had it on me. I have a feeling my girlfriends sister mentioned something to my girlfriend about it. My girlfriend and I don’t text a lot but she was sending me a lot of texts last night when I got home. I’m guessing to make sure I wasn’t pissed. I didn’t mention anything about it to her and I won’t be, for now. She needs to have the other surgery today and heal. If she brings it up, I’ll discuss it with her. If she doesn’t bring it up, I will in the next few weeks. |
