And to lighten the mood, I'll share a story about the first time I met my ex GF's grandparents. First time meeting the whole family, and my ex's dad mentions to the grandpa that I had just gotten my first pistol. A 1911 and he excitedly ushers me into his bedroom to show me his 1911 compact. He gets it out of the dresser and is telling me all about it, and I'm standing next to him, at an angle with the dresser to my left. And thats when it happened. The fucking most unexpected and loudest sound I had ever heard, and I look down and hes holding this compact with the barrel still smoking, and a look of disbelief on his face. The drawer had wood splinters everywhere, and as were both sitting there befuddled the entire house comes running in. He pulled the trigger while racking the slide to clear it. It missed my leg by probably 6 inches or so, and while my ears are basically doing the "whop whop whop" from Archer, the fire alarm goes off.

Poor old guy was so embarrassed. He was ex-mil and retired police

Guess OP is going to find out where his GF stands when it comes to serious matters.

Went over to my girlfriends parents house tonight. My oldest son (7. from a previous marriage) and I dropped off my youngest (2) at their house since he's staying the night. My girlfriend was sent to the ER last night and had to have her gallbladder removed. She also has a good size stone that needs to be removed that they couldn't get today. She goes back in for surgery tomorrow to get the stone removed. My parents are taking my oldest back to meet his mom in the Seattle area tomorrow so I can head to the hospital.

So, sitting on the couch at my gf's parents I hear her dad mumble "jesus christ". Wasn't sure what it was about but whatever. Told everyone that I needed to get going and stood up and picked up my two year old to give him a hug and kiss goodbye. Girlfriends dad, a man who never says a word to anyone hardly, says;

Gf Dad: "David, do you have a gun on you?"

Me: "Yes I do."

Gfs Dad: "Don't ever bring a gun in to my house again."

Me: "Ok. Didn't think it was an issue but I will respect your wishes."

Gfs Dad: "I just don't want that in my house."

I wasn't really sure what to say. Caught me off guard, but the way he said it in front of every one, really pissed me off. Especially in front of my seven year old (he knows I carry). Girlfriends mom and sister were there as well. I left shortly after. My son and I get into the car and he says "dad, that was awkward". Yes, yes it was...

He knows I carry. Knows I have guns in the house and has never said anything about it. I don't outer carry and always make sure my shirt is covering. I was carrying a P365 so nothing huge and barely notice.

Just left me with an uneasy feeling.

I know, CSB.

I don't think I would have been embarrassed because there was nothing illegal, immoral, or otherwise untoward about carrying a gun.

However, I would respect his wishes in his home, and let him know that while I will respect his wishes, my carrying a gun is neither illegal, immoral, or untoward.  It simply allows me an additional option for me to protect myself and those I love.  I would add that I respect everyone else's wishes to either protect, or not protect those they love in whatever manner they choose, even if they choose to not protect them.

That way, he would know I was not the least defensive about carrying a gun, and expresses my feelings about those who choose to NOT protect those they love.

ETA:  I would seriously consider no longer going into his house when dropping off or picking anyone up.  If he asks why, it is because you are honoring his wishes.  You do NOT need to justify your carrying a gun to him.

I would also be very worried about a red flag issue if he ever got pissed at you about something like breaking up with his daughter, or doing something else he doesn't approve of.  That alone may be reason enough to end the relationship with his daughter.

Let her know that her father isn't worth the risk of being red flagged if he ever gets pissed off.  His reaction with the "OH MY GOD", tells me that he is pretty high strung over the issue.  If he would have more calmly said "I notice you carry a gun, please don't bring one into my house in the future", I might feel less of a possible red flag threat.  I detest feeling on the defensive about carrying a gun over the red flag issue, but that was the whole point of red flag laws....making gun owners feel defensive over their ownership of a legal item.

This. I can't believe so many people are saying "his house, his rules" and "just don't go there anymore."
This guy is potentially a huge threat. I mean, he's already proven himself to be irrational.
If he doesn't want guns in house, he's not going to be comfortable with guns around his daughter.
Sooner or later, this situation is going to come to a head.  And these days, one phone call wrecks the OP's life.

It's good that you respect his wishes and his rules in his home and were polite about it.

He could have had a quiet word with you man-to man rather than embarrassing you in front of everyone.  That would have been a mutually respectful thing to do, but it is what it is.

It also suggests that if he doesn't trust you with a gun he probably won't trust you in other ways.  That makes it awkward.

I wouldn't fall out over it, but I wouldn't be going back in his home anytime soon.  He's made his views known and I'd rather be made to feel welcome again, than go there without knowing.

I guess it comes down to you following his wishes by leaving your gun in the car while you go into the house, or following his wishes by keeping your gun on you and not going into his home.

If he invites you in you can always smile, wave and say "Thanks but I have my gun on me, so I'll wait outside."
