FWIW, active (speaking) vocabulary is a world apart from passive (listening/reading) vocabulary.

Everyone on Arfcom is a genius.

I suspect the participants in this thread are above average, at least until EXP Custom shows up. The internet is a filter for basic literacy. It excludes those who cannot read nor write at all.

I would agree, and add that a good number of people with really bad vocabularies wouldn't be interested in taking the test, anyway.

ETA:  I linked the vocab quiz in EXP's pit thread, should be fun.

I always considered myself to have a lousy vocabulary, and I took it.

Too bad we don't know how it formulates the answers.  But I suspect it is higher than reality, and soon some will post results that blow mine out of the water.

My vocabulary is estimated at something between 35,000 to 45,000 words.    This isn't hard to achieve if you are the sort

that sticks his nose into every subject that is even REMOTELY interesting to you for even a few short minutes.

I'm the sort who'd probably dominate if I got on Jeopardy.   My head is so full of assorted random facts and trivial information

and specialized knowledge,  I'd HAVE to be on a rampage if I got on that show.

When they recently put IBM's newest supercomputer on the show as a contestant against Ken Jennings,  I was watching

and if the show's pace was the same as the real world, I'd have won.

I really should try to get on that show.  It could work out very well for me.

If I couldn't think of the exact definition of the word I didn't select it. There were several words that I have read and sorta understand from context but I didn't select them. Still, I think the results are at best a rough estimate.

That Shakespeare dude sure knew a lot of words. Some of them completely made up by him. Do those count?

I know hundreds if not thousands of technical engineering and programming words too. Does malloc and strcpy count?
