That looks like a bald faced hornet.


Looks exactly like the ones in the OP and I was always told they were Asian/Japanese Wasps.

Me too.  

Have since learned that the one in your pic is a European hornet.  They're a little smaller but just as mean with a nasty sting.  The larger Japanese hornet hasn't made it to the US.

I learned the things I always called japanese hornets are actually european hornets, and real japanese hornets are to european hornets what european hornets are to normal hornets.

No shit. I picked up a drain pan outside and one of those cicada killers was underneath it. I was NOT expecting to see a two-inch hornet looking mofo under there.  Holy shit
