IIRC, the engine was a completely new design by Hayes or some sub.

I would LOVE to see the Japs come out with a good multifuel go-anywhere bike. Anywhere from 250-650cc. Under $10K. Designed for durability, not glitz. They would sell a shit-ton.

I believe the short answer is a modified, previous generation KLR-650.  Somehow, the engine is modified to run on diesel, which must be an extremely extensive modification.

No!  Cylinder head and fuel injection, that was it!

Well, Back in the day.....(Height of Reagan), we haulled around Kawaski bikes.  There was a contract a few years ago where Buell had made some, and the local Harley Dealer was selling some of the Overruns.

In my time, they were 19D's, Armored Cavalry Scouts....

But, that was awhile ago....

Buell never made motorcycle for the US Military.
Harley "made" the MT500, it was an Armstrong motorcycle with a Rotax engine.
Not many were produced.

Seen quite a few pictures of some kind of SF on what looks like new 250 or 450 MX bikes but they aren't any kind of standard issue.

I remember that. They were announced and everyone was

Then they said $20K and everyone was

Yup I was on that mailing list. Not a hard choice for me when you can buy a GS for 20k.

I can handle a outdated gutless diesel bike if the price is right but not for 20 grand

How did you get two of them?
They are not supposed to be sold to the public, that was one of the deals with Hayes Diversified Technologies, much like the Humve.

They are not supposed to.
When the bike wears out they remove the engine, return it to Hayes Diversified and destroy the frame.
The engine is refurbished and reused.

Kawasaki KLR 250-D8

A pair of AFSOC Combat Controllers (CCTs) pictured riding Kawasaki KLR250-D8 motorcycles. CCT motorcycles can be airdropped from aircraft on special pallets under parachutes. The 75th Ranger Regiment also use KLR-250s for administration and reconnaissance, along with newer, smaller Suzuki DS80 mini bikes.  Public domain | US Air Force Photo by 1st Lt. Gabe Johnson

They are smaller and lighter than the full scale Kawasaki / Christini motorcycles also used by special tactics and are easier to deploy via parachute. Mini bikes are small and light enough to be attached to the sides of MH-6 helicopters and can be stowed on the rear of a GMV or similar vehicle. Aside from Air Force Special Tactics Teams, the Army's 75th Rangers also operate the DS8. Other models used include the Kawasaki KLX110.

So $4,500 bike with $4,500 worth of mods?
Engine conversion
Different fuel tank (plastic and ~7 gal vs metal and ~6 gal)
New OD plastic
Paint frame and wheels
Meh, sounds about right. Remember, these were converted commercial models, not purpose built.
But, it kept the aftermarket awash in fuel tanks and plastic for years

The fuck, IMS will sell you the military or the civilian version of the KLR650 tank all day long.
All it takes is money.

We had a KLR in Arghanistan.  I got to ride it around a bit, but not for anything significant and not for long.  Our CO was off the COP for a while and my 1st was a badass that wanted us to look cool and have fun, so we took a few quads, the KLR, and a few trucks on some of the local patrols.

We also had a hajicycle from a dude we chased and detained.  Rode that shit back and used it for SOG for tower guard and the like.

Our Bn Commander had ours for OIF in 2003.
He sent two guys from the STA platoon to get checked out, and they were supposed to be some rat patrol style scouts for hims while we moved in column north invading.
They from from Kuwait, until the cities started building up.   And then they bikes went back on the BC's trailer.
IIRC the only Marines that rated bikes were STA and mail room (might have been one more).

I stand corrected.

Usually a diesel anything needs a beefed up bottom end and cylinder wall thickness to deal with higher compression and generally more low end oomph.

If it was only the head & FI that they wanted a $12-14K premium for, then it is

I got to ride on of those when I was hanging out with the ANP. It was the "Toyta Carolla" version.

We would ride them straight into ch47ds "Chinooks" strapem down and away we would go.

They couldn't get a commercial version of the USMC bike certified "street legal".  There was all manner of emissions requirements to be met that required real engineering solutions unlike the military model which they just had to "make work".

Having said that, even at $10k, I'm STILL looking for a BMW GS with about 30,000 miles.

These two were acquired thru the leso program the one in the front has less
Than 90 miles the one in the rear has around 300 both look brand new with very
Little use.
