I have never driven a manual car before. Both of my parents had automatics (my dad got an auto just so my mom could drive his car if she wanted, nicer than I would have been), the first car I bought was an eldorado, then I got a Lexus, neither of which come in manual. I do want to learn manual, just need to go buy a beater car to learn it in. I would imagine it isn't too much different than dirtbikes and motorcycles (which I can ride), I think I could learn fast, but I just have never had the chance

I think you can switch it from manual to automatic mode.

But it might be a manual.  DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS, IT'S ALL IIRC.

paddle shifters don't have a clutch, and you really can't fuck up when using them. I hardly consider them manual transmission

And I don't think they have gears like a manual, rather a hydraulic system just like a regular auto.

Ferrari, BMW and other manufacturers have a paddle shifting manual transmission with a clutch. Computer controlled  hydraulic servos actuate the clutch and shift the transmission. The computer also blips the throttle to rev match when down shifting.

You still have to use the clutch to get started.  The ones without the clutch are just automatics.

I'd rather they stick in a conventional auto shifter and spend the money on better components.
I hate it that Detroit caters to the idiots that like gimmicks.

Motorcycle(s), 70s VW bug, Ford pickup with '3 on the floor' converted from '3 on the tree', Civics, Accords, 67 Mustang,  MG Midgit, Mom's econo-station wagon, Datsun pickup(with spoker wheels), Camero, family friends Porsche(moved it in the driveway),more Civics/Hondas. We still have two, Accord w/ 6 speed, Civic w/ 4 changed to 5 speed. Does this qualify?

My Daily Driver is a 1994 Ford Exploder with a Manual Trans.   Worn Synchros in the Tranny, so hard to shift unless you do it  just right.

Project car is a 1991 BMW 318is with Manual.

However, being stuck in heavy/Start-Stop traffic in a manual is a pain in the ass.

Will probably always have some kind of a fun car with manual trans--for longer distance driving, etc. probably will eventually pick up an Auto.

I will only drive a pussy transmission if work requires it (they buy them for the inept bastards they hire) otherwise all I will drive or own are Standards, since I was 12 years old.

I can shift without a clutch, in regular vehicles and commercial, but rarely ever do, just a bad habit to get into I have found, causes issues on the ice sometimes.

Like a turbine powered contraption with constant thrust or whatever they call it?

Is he referring to that Chrysler turbine car they street trialed in the '60s?  I actually saw one of those on the street as a teenager.  Crap, I am old.

Dirt midget.  The quickchange rearend has a sliding dog that locks it in 'gear' and the push truck pushes you out on the track with the motor spinning away and when the oil pressure comes up you flip on the magneto switch and drive away.  Sprint cars are the same way except V8's. Pretty wild.  If you spin out you have to wait for the push truck.

Where I grew up my father didn't want much extra water in the driveway so we drove the cars halfway around the house on the grass to wash them. When I was about 12 I told my father I would take over the car washing If he would teach me how to drive my mothers 64 vw! My mother freaked when she found out but my father covered and made it seem like it was his idea . My father had been taught to drive by his uncle out on the farm when he was about the same age (this would have been 1931ish) My father was the oldest of his family and also older than his cousins. My father and his sisters would spend sumers at the farm near the lake, His uncle would send him into town by himself to pick up stuff that he needed, times have changed !

A lot of companies are going with auto's.We have a couple at our terminal. They do fairly well, but don't pull as well as the sticks. The one I rode in (didn't drive) seem to shift and down shift a little hard but it may have been the driver being a little hard on the accelerator.

First car: 1973 Datsun 610 with 4 on the floor

Drove a 1967 Chevy G20 window van with 3 on the tree

Driven about every automobile brand with a manual transmission except Ferrari's and Lambourghini's (Japanese, Korean, Ford, Chrysler, GM, German, French, Italian minus those mentioned). Motorcycles and ATV's with manual transmissions too.

Being an auto mechanic (retired now) had its privledges when it came to test drives

Last manual transmission was a 1998 Ford Escort. Was hit in early 2004, insurance totalled vehicle.

Presently own an automatically equipped 2004 Ford F250 Diesel. Drive to work is 50 miles one way every day, mostly highway mileage. Automatic helps in stop and go if stuck in traffic behind an accident.

Wife used to drive a 1994 Ford Escort with manual transmission until I bought her a 2003 Ford Escape with automatic transmission.

When I was working in Barbados a few years ago, they had manual rentals, but I have yet to see one in the US even at the rent-a-wreck places.

Only bad thing in Barbados was that you sit on the right side of the car (they drive on the wrong side down there) and shift with your left hand.  Now, I am a lefty, but I am still used to shifting with my right hand.  It was interesting for a few days what with missed shifts and all.
