Even gun owners say they are ok with this shit until they realize what it entails.
Once they realize that it means they need to pay to give a gun to a neighbor they get pissed. Once they realize that it becomes a felony to loan a hunting buddy a shotgun after dark they get pissed. Once they realize that leaving the house for a week is a felony they get pissed. Once they realize that handing a cousin a .22 to plink at cans on the back 40 is a felony they get pissed. The problem is that a huge number of people refuse to believe that Schumer's Intolerable Act does these things. Even if you show them the plain text of the bill, they bleat, "Nuh uh! It is only about background checks for sales and gun shows and stuff like that!"  Hell even people who live under regimes like this in states like PA (bans on private handgun sales) don't often realize it and unwittingly commit crimes on a routine basis.
Honestly the redefinition of the word "transfer" is almost as bad as the registration component. Fighting the bullshit "gun trafficking" part of the bill that turns all the wonderful tools of the war on drugs on gun owners is even harder. Too many people believe in the inherent goodness of the system. They bleat, "oh, the ATF would never seize my home and car using that civil asset forfeiture stuff! That'd be wrong!" Or, "They'd never trump up bullshit charges and threaten me with 25 years in prison to get me to make up lies about my shooting buddies! That'd be an immoral police tactic!"
