Bottom gates open all the time. Happens more than you think.
Many bottom hoppers are a rack and pinion. When the pinion gear isn’t properly locked, the rack gate will slide open during transit, releasing the hopper. |

RIFF
“The railcar was sealed when it left the Cheyenne facility, and the seals were still intact when it arrived in Saltdale. The initial assessment is that a leak through the bottom gate on the railcar may have developed in transit,” the company said through a spokesperson. A Federal Railroad Administration representative, though, says the investigation points to one of the hopper car gates not being properly closed. |

Quoted: Some 60,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used as both fertilizer and a component in explosives, went missing as it was shipped by rail from Wyoming to California last month, prompting four separate investigations. Ammonium nitrate is commonly used as fertilizer. It's also an ingredient in high explosives and was used in the homemade bomb detonated in the 1995 attack on the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. https://www.kqed.org/news/11949697/california-officials-trying-to-track-down-missing-30-ton-shipment-of-explosive-chemicals View Quote I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with the thousands of terrorists who slipped across the border. |

They should probably place the diesel cars in between the ammonium nitrate cars just to be safe.

Probably some of the terrorists who came in with the flow of illegal aliens has it now.

Water soluble, a little rain and it’s gone.
What makes the green grass grow? They should send the car back over the same route with a load of grass seed to see where the fertilizer fell. |

pretty sure there are different grades of fertilizer they all can't be used in explosives...they are safeguards in place in the makeup of fertilizer these days.
hyped up story iirc |

If you guys need any fertilizer, I've got a lot of it; Close to 80 tons.
And every house in this neighborhood recycles. |

Ok so it leaked out. Do trains have rear facing cameras? Just curious if that would help.

That's going to be the greenest, most lush stretch of railroad track anyone's ever seen.

Quoted: Ok so it leaked out. Do trains have rear facing cameras? Just curious if that would help. View Quote The car could literallly be a couple miles or more behind the locomotive. At any rate, I've radio'd the crew before when I see a leaky hopper. They'll tone up the dispatcher and dispatch usually just tells them to highball (don't worry about it) Look down any set of tracks and chances are pretty good you'll see a pile of grain, potash or something that has leaked out of a car. |

Short of Breaking Bad how does a whole train car of material disappear?
The mob. |

I’m only guessing but they might have meant a compartment was empty. *I think* |
