SBR in IL for home defense?

"Not Sure if Serious.JPG"

I would NEVER use an NFA item for HD. You will likely lose it to the evidence room for some time and IDK if that many PD's would give back an NFA item.

WTF is the point of having it if you won't use it?

NFA=Range Toy IMHO.

Its going to be a rifle either way, I'm asking about having it either in 5.56 or .45 configuration.
Pistol cartridges are usually lacking, that said the .45 may be the exception. I would still use a 556 if you have a rifle platform, pick the correct ammo.

My 12.5" SBR is my primary HD gun.  55gr Barnes TSX.

Waiting for my dealer to get the suppressor I want in stock, then the paperwork starts, and that will rest on this rifle as well.

That was exacly what I was going to do, but I thought Gemtech required 10.5" longer barrels only with their supressors to prevent baffle strikes.

THat would look hot on my 7.5 though..

Rifle = Primary.

Handgun = Backup.

Does anybody know of a comparison between 5.56 and .45 being fired out of the same length barrel?

I'm thinking about an SBR intended for defensive situations under 100 feet.

With a barrel of 10" or so, would you rather be firing a 5.56 round or a .45? Reasons?

Can you swap the barrel on that 5.56 and have a .300BLK?

While it sounds like an idea, the ammo cost is a little prohibitive for me.

I thought frangible rounds were not good against people

Anything moving at 2900+ feet per second...remind me to duck (30 times).

    I think frangible rounds are a no-no when using suppressors.

I would go with the 5.56 over the .45. It's superior in pretty much every way except for the increased muzzle blast.

I use a AR pistol...with a seven inch barrel..

at 50 yards rounds will still fragment in milk jugs with water...

Good point.

I guess maybe I should have actually read the OP.

this.

handguns are not nearly as effective at stopping people as rifles.

Handgun rounds are not nearly as effective as rifle rounds

Old_Painless, you seem to know what you're talking about. What do you suggest?

Just some notes: 10" SBR, very short range uses, and due to the current laws in my state lets assume it can not be suppressed.

Then it's going to be loud as fuck and I would hate to be inside when it goes off.

How much louder than a 16 inch? I've been inside a house when a 16 went off right beside me, and it wasn't that bad.

Well if we're talking home defense, my ears ringing are way down on the list of my problems at that moment.

It's kinda like hunting. When the deer (bad guy) is infront of you when that gun goes off your adrinalin is going and you don't even notice the sound fom the gun. For some reason my 7mm mag makes my ears ring for a week if I target shoot without hearing protection but up in that stand my ears don't even have a hint of ringing.

I keep electronic hearing protection by the HDW.  Amplifies quiet sounds, blocks out the super loud ones.
