Like a lot of other people have said, I have no problem with them.  I graduated from high school in 2001 and had camers on my school buses from middle school on (didn't ride a bus before that).  iirc, they installed the camera boxes in every bus, but on any given day, neither the driver nor the students knew whether there was actually a camera in the box.

They're there to watch the drivers as much as the kids.  If the driver assaults your kid (it has happened), the video is used against them.  My views are pretty libertarian in general, and I just can't think of a situation where a camera on a school bus would be a bad thing.

And you can't see that this is reactionary? Is it going to get your kid un-fucked up by the driver? No - all they can do is react to it. If a kid gets off the bus bleeding and says the bus driver beat him, I'm not waiting for the video to come out.

who said it isn't reactionary?  So is having security cameras outside yourself, but that doesn't make it inherently bad and they are also preventive to an extent.  Is a driver happens to be an abusive asshole more or less likely to hit a kid for being a smartass if they know there's a camera watching? Additionally, if something bad does happen, or your kid is accused of doing something bad, the camera documents what happens objectively.  I don't see it as being all that different than cameras in police cruisers.

When I rode the bus to middle school, I had a kid talking shit to me on the bus, I talked back.  At his stop his dad was waiting to pick him up.  I told the kid if he didn't shut his mouth, i'd not only kick his ass, i'd kick his dad's ass too.

Middle school was when I stopped putting up with the bullying bullshit.  He didn't talk shit to me anymore after that day.

They've been doing this for years...much like retail store cameras, they don't even look at them unless an incident is reported

I'm ok with it. If you don't like them you can drive your kids to school or let them walk. Now if they were forced to ride the bus with cameras I might not agree with that.

Well...considering I am a school bus driver. I like them. If I have a problem with a student, I pull the tape, present it to the school, and write the child up. It is a semi effective tool in preventing problems on the bus but nowadays its barely working. I have to check my bus for drugs and weapons everyday now as it is. I feel that it also makes the bus safer since I have cameras oustide my bus facing the front and rear right underneath my stop sign, that way when a$$#%^%@ run my stop sign, all I have to do is hit a button and it marks the spot in the film so that I can get the tag info and send a picture over to the Sheriffs office with the info on the vehicle. The cameras are there to protect the kids, GET OVER IT. Enough of this Big Brother s#$#.    Jeff

Mixed feelings on this - comes down to it being a sad commentary on sociey where we have to resort to this. Considering some of the animals running around (the kid who attacked the bus driver in Michigan comes to mind) and lawyers ready to sue anyone and everything at the drop of a hat, probably the only legal solution.

ETA: As far as the cameras - this is smalltown usa, not baltimore or shitcago. We're talking about a small town of about 5k on grade-school buses.

Hmmm, the thought of cameras on the buses bugs you.....but  sending your kids off to the government indoctrination seems okay.

I know a parent that hates them - seems her daughter, who wouldn't do nuttin' wrong - got busted giving BLOW JOBS in the back of the bus.  Got it on tape.

I'll be the Principal felt good whipping that tape out after the kid and the Mom had been reaming his ass for 30 minutes about how he was RACIST for pickin' on her poor black self.

No kidding.  Most schools already have cameras in the hallway... how is this any different?

They "had them" in our busses growing up.

In actuallity they were boxes with a fake camera lense and a flashing red light.

May'be we'll be lucky enough that the schools will start putting them in every classroom, the bathroom and locker rooms too
It would make sure people aren't doing anything wrong outside the hallway areas and protect the teachers and students during instructional times.

Londoners photographed 425 times a day
Now plans are to increase surveillance

LONDON – The UK already is the West's most surveyed nation – the average Londoner is secretly photographed an average 425 times a day and officials now are launching a new Big Brother plan that will intensify the observation of civilians, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

An anonymous building in a business park on the outskirts of Heathrow Airport is where the MI5 Security Service has begun monitoring all passengers arriving at or flying out of the facility's terminals from this week onwards.

There is no exemption for Americans starting their flights in the United States. They will find their details recorded and stored for a decade. No warning has been given of the secret surveillance to the public.

Other British airports will soon be linked to what MI5 agents insist "is essential to fight terrorism." This week it announced the threat is now "at the upper end of severe." It was a warning that an attack could be "imminent."

The top-secret system near Heathrow uses over a thousand computers – and is tied-in to the airline industry's ticketing network.

The surveillance system makes split-second decisions about all passengers. Linked to CCTV cameras at the airports, it can make similar decisions about families and friends meeting incoming flights and determine if they are already listed on "security risk" databases.

These databases are stored in a massive monitoring center in the south of London. The building resembles a warehouse and appears no different from others bordering the River Thames. However it is enclosed by a security fence strengthened to resist a Baghdad-style suicide bomber.

From within the building comes the low hum of an air-conditioning system to cool the powerful computers, which are linked to the equally sophisticated building near Heathrow.

Known only as "Status Park Four," the glass-fronted building has taken two years to build. It has bomb-proof doors and windows and is further protected by ground sensors.

Its computers list all the information passengers are now required to give when booking a flight. This includes their home address, telephone numbers, e-mail address, passport details and the names of all family members.

I cant help u with that one. I dont know why it would do it. Is it around new buses or old buses? Some or all? What is the manufacture of the bus?
To reply to the other comments, I assure you...the cameras on our buses are real. We have switched to digital video so we can record extended lengths. The cameras used to only pick up from the 3rd seats back, but the new system we use is so good, they can see if I am speeding.

It is for safety and I am for it.  Many public transit buses are also equipped with cameras and have aided in solving many crimes.

Unfortunately, alot of schools are having their budgets cut. May'be schools could do fund raisers by selling the video footage at auction? Plus it will make sure people clean up after themselves and don't use too much toilet paper, which costs the taxpayer

Bathroom Cameras a Good Thing, Says School
by Roger Sinasohn Feb 3rd 2009 2:00PM

Categories: Weird but true, Education

Someone installs cameras in the school bathrooms, hoping to catch teenage girls involved in some "horseplay." Sounds like it's time to call the police, yes? Or Joe Francis. But wait, not only is the school well aware of the situation, it put them there.

Some students had "expressed concern that the wash basin areas were not being respected by a small minority" –– and so the cameras were installed, claimed Aeron Rhys, head of Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi, a school in Wales. "The CCTV was installed to monitor these areas and it's done the trick. There's been a significant improvement." Improvement in what, you ask? Misuse of paper and soap, according to one school governor.

One parent, whose 14-year-old daughter was a student at the school, is having none of it. The cameras are an "outrageous invasion of privacy," he said. "The whole place is like they're on Big Brother. There are cameras all around the school, outside and in the corridors."

"Toilets can be areas where misbehavior occurs," deadpanned the school and local councils
, who are behind the cameras.

Plus if the schools hire more people to monitor the cameras it will create jobs and stimulate the economy

The school used to only review the cameras if something happened. It's not like someone is actively sitting around watching all these kids during their trip.

Obama is wasting his time trying to stimulate the economy through green initiatives. He might better grow more jobs and create new industries with purchasing, installation and monitoring services as well as maintenance of the equipment

It could be a whole new growth industry like the hi tech boom years and foster a "silicon valley".

Usually they'll install an empty box, with a mirrored front, and a working LED. Only if the bus driver requests it will they put a camera in a bus. Atleast here.

'Open carry' guns at our children's risk

By James Carroll
June 16, 2008

In despair over unchecked gun-carnage in Chicago schools, Mayor Richard Daley asked, "Why is America turning its back on its children when it comes to gun violence?" The answer is buried deep in the national psyche, and I am a case in point. The gun is a totemic object, with meanings that drill far below surface arguments about self-defense, the sport of hunting, standing militias, or the intent of the Framers. Children die because these deeper meanings of the gun go unreckoned with.

I'm okay with it for the same reason I installed my own camera/recorder in my classroom. I got tired of little johnny or jill lying about what they or I did or did not do in the classroom. 'Cuz "My little Johnny/Jill would *never* do anything wrong." No, it was not a spycam, it was in full view, mounted above the chalkboard at the front of the room.

The school also had its own cameras mounted in hallways, entrances, and cafeteria. These often helped to determine the perps of assaults, fights, vandalism, etc.

If these are wrong, then cop car dashcams are wrong. But, they're not. They help to document both parties' actions and can help to build a case, exonerate a suspect, or catch wrongdoing by officers.

So basically you acked like normal kids .

so fighting and beating the piss out of each other or the bus driver is acting normal?

The way these animals act nowadays yes it is normal. Not doing drugs and getting into fights every week is the abnormality.
