IE all the local drug dealers, thugs, and gang bangers basically get a badge with power, and training to back it up... |

i couldn't get a kid in my neighborhood to mow the lawn for $40.00 an hour and you think the government is going to make them work for free??
if it ever gets off the ground, it's more likely to turn into some absurdly expensive form of worthless "community service" then some obama army. we'll end up paying a million dollars a mile for litter free highways. |

What constitutes 10 hours of service? Can it be documented by the parent? here is what my monthly schedule would be for my kids:
neighborhood beautifucation projects - 1.5 hours individual skills and coordination training - 4 hours (at the range) picking up brass - 1 hour physical fitness and self defense - 4 hours Done!

4-h shooting sports program - focused on the development of the individual, while teaching the children how to safely enjoy shooting sports.
6 weeks, 1.5 hrs per week, +end of term party - tad over 10 hrs. I don't think it should be forced, but can imagine a lot worse ways kids can spend 10 hrs. (fwiw, we are not allowed to use targets that are in the likeness of a human - so no Osama targets allowed. I have lived with quite a few Russian exchange students. Funny thing is while pretty much have mandatory service (I think 1 or 2 years), none had a huge about of love for Mother Russia. |

Look closely at section 6104(b)(5 & 6)
(5) The effect on the Nation, on those who serve, and on the families of those who serve, if all individuals in the United States were expected to perform national service or were required to perform a certain amount of national service. (6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. Those 2 sections are under ideas to study. this law does nothing more than give money to study the effects of section 5 and 6 above. Read the whole thing. There is nothing making anything mandatory ..yet. |
