I agree with Dave45.  It wasn't until the "godless pinko commie hysteria" of the 50s that "under God" was added to begin with.  The thumbsucking morons in Congress, as usual, created the problem.

The United States, unlike any other nation except Israel, was founded by men who believed G*d was doing the work. Our founders, almost without exception believed G*d was guiding the process... With the rise of atheistic communism, the pledge was changed in the 50's, to reflect Americas belief that the cold war was spiritual, (Good vs. Evil), in nature. As can be seen in the events since the 50's, America has lost the battle, and is sinking rapidly..... Soon we will be just like your country, and others in the world. However, our fate will likely be worse than that of any other country, because we knew the truth, and departed from it...

[thinking] How about...

[red]The Hymn of the Soviet Union

Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand.
Created in struggle by will of the people,
United and mighty, our Soviet land!

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
Inspired them to labor and valorous deed.
[Or, the old way:
Be true to the people, thus Stalin has reared us,
Inspire us to labor and valorous deed!]

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

In the vict'ry of Communism's deathless ideal,
We see the future of our dear land.
And to her fluttering scarlet banner,
Selflessly true we always shall stand![/red]

Well, I'm a patriot and a gun owner as well as an atheist.  Our founding fathers may have believed God was guiding them but they put a little something in the Constitution that we so dearly love that calls for a separation between Church and State.  And I for one totally agree with it.  Why should I have to preach to a God I do not believe in just because I want to show my patriotism?

I almost hate to do this, but here goes...  This is gonna hurt...

Seems like every "downtrodden so and so (PC) says "F%&k everybody but MEEEEEEE!!!!!"

That's where it seems to be going....

Threefiftynone says, "God, Guts, & Guns....I'll stick with the Big Three!!!"  They have gotten me where I am today"  No Welfare, no Foodsamps, no bullshit.....  well maybe just a bushel and a peck of the bullshit.....

When I was 5, I told my daddy I wanted a go cart...  That rotten bastard said "Me too..."

A couple of years later, I told daddy I wanted a dirt bike..."Here's a lawnmower...  turn it into a dirtbike..."

When I turned that Snapper walk behind into a ragged out XR75 that needed a chain and sprocket set to run more than 15 yards(neighbor's yards, mind you)without throwing the chain, of course I asked the old man for some cash...

"Go to the bank and get a loan.  They will want a down payment, and collateral..."

I think I was 10 years old when he told me that...

My mother tells me he was too hard on us....

25 years later, I am making my own way in the world, as the rest of my siblings are today.

I thank my daddy every time I talk to him for "being too hard on us".

The more I think about these "politically correct" people, the more pissed off I get...

These "titty babies" are sucking all of us hard working, responsible people dry...

You know they are gonna try to get some money out of this fiasco..

Are they gonna demand the money not have "In God We Trust" anywhere on it???

I doubt it...

Fuck Em ....

And get a grip...

around their neck...

One Nation, Under God.

When the constitution was written, I doubt that there were many athiest and those who were athiest probably kept it to themselves. The seperation of church and state issue is a non issue. At the time the document was written no one doubted that there was a god or creator. That became fashionable much later. God is not a religeon. The acceptance that there is a god or denial thereof does not make you a religeous person or define your specific religeon.

If you don't like the way the pledge is written or don't agree with it then don't say it. Just don't tell me I can't say it.

THIS has got to be the WINNER:

"In the night of death, hope sees a star,
and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing."
- Robert Ingersoll

If tomorrow all the things were gone

I'd worked for all my life,

And I had to start again

with just my children and my wife,

I'd thank my lucky stars

to be living here today,

'Cause the flag still stands for freedom

and they can't take that away.

And I'm proud to be an American

where at least I know I'm free,

And I won't forget the men who died

who gave that right to me,

And I gladly stand up next to you

and defend her still today,

'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land

God Bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota

to the hills of Tennessee,

Across the plains of Texas

from sea to shining sea.

From Detroit down to Houston

and New York to L.A.,

There's pride in every American heart

and it's time we stand and say:

That I'm proud to be an American

where at least I know I'm free,

And I won't forget the men who died

who gave that right to me,

And I gladly stand up next to you

and defend her still today,

'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land

God Bless the U.S.A.

Bull alert
The separation was a note by Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists that was to assure them that the state would make no religion ...the wall of separation is simply so the baptists were reassured that unlike England whose Church of England was forced upon Christians in the United States would be free to worship the Creator and His Son as they wished...

If the names "Christ" or "Budda" were opart of the pledge, then it would be specific to particular religious beliefs &, therefore, unconstitutional. But "God" is non-specific. The phrase, "...under God...", was inserted in 1954. If this is so offensive & so important an issue to garner this much scrutiny, then why not simply remove the "offensive" phrase?

On the other hand, aren't all citizens' rights supposed to be equally important & protected under the original (constitutional) framework? Must the "offended" minority opinion supercede? And just where in the US Constitution is there a stated right to not be offended?

The pledge is not about forcing any religion upon someone. "God" is a non-specific reference to a nebulous creator &, in essence, is an admission that religion does influence social &/or legal constructs. For example, the legal distinctions utilized in discriminating between 1st, 2nd, 3rd deg. murder can be directly traced to the foundations of Judaic law, elaborated in the Old Testamnent of the Holy Bible.

Until yesterday, the pledge has been a carte blanche part of Americana & atheists have (at least in the past) somehow managed to avoid the stain of religious persecution &/or indoctrination. There would be no forfeiture of justice to expect the "offended" few to accept that theology (actually) isn't being forced upon them, stop crying wolf, & quit being a false martyr.

Seems like most of the time, the only person jerking an atheist's chain is the atheist her/himself.

Pipe down.

Umm, common misperception. Everytime I get in a discussion with a religionist it's always
"Einstein was religious..." or "Our country was founded on religion, Washington was a churchgoer..." - or some other statement that is functionally very very similar to "Rosie O'Donnell and Meryl Streep support gun control." - with the consequent implication that since certain folks had certain beliefs it *must* be good for you/nation, too.

Like liberalism, when you pump crap down for generations, it tends to stick in the minds & thought processes.

Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Mason, Franklin, and many others (including some great hard-charging as*holes like Ethan Allan) were not really believers. They may have made a courteous bow to some others' religious feelings on occasion or used the term "god" as a catch-all term implying whatever forces threw life together.

These men were educated folks and were trying to bring mankind out of the age of superstition. They had seen the depredations to individual freedom (and, for that matter, to members of other religions) that state-supported religions had created, and knew of the once awesome political power of the pope and Catholic church - Inquisition, etc. They believed in the power of logical thought, and that man could better himself; they were avid readers of Hobbs, Montesquieu (splg?)  and others who argued that man's fundamental inalienable rights were inherent to his existence.

The above, however, doesn't mean that some of our Founders were not religious, but that their religion didn't rub off on our founding structures, or that they were smart & decent enough to separate their beliefs from building our nation.

We're NOT an "anything" nation, and certainly we aren't a "Christian" nation: never have been, never will, and if it were moving in that direction, I'd be on a rooftop with an AR and my Rem 700LTR.

Really not much difference between religions except order-of-magnitude of the body count.

Oh, come off it: that's pure bullhockey!

Where did you learn this crap - must've been from a church or a public school (both are guilty of shovelling crap to force their beliefs on others).

Lots of our Founding Fathers - I'd bet at least 70% of the signers of the Declaration - were, at the least, agnostics. I *know* big boys like Jefferson, Madison, Adams (both Sam & John), Mason were essentially nonbelievers.

Being nonreligious...
- DOESN'T mean you want kids to be taught
   "Bobby has 2 mommies";
- DOESN'T mean you're for big gov't;
- DOESN'T mean you want taxes;
- DOESN'T mean you suppress others' religions;
- DOESN'T mean you support the right to sleep
  with goats.
- DOESN'T mean you don't support vouchers.

I really don't give a rat's ass if our $$ says "In God we trust" or the Pledge says "...under God". It's not worth the money to change things, etc. If you can show me a friggin' god around, that's fine: I'd like to ask him why He stopped Big3 from making good muscle cars, and why fast-food burgers aren't as good as they used to be in the 70s.

Bull SHIT!!! Thomas Jefferson was a Deist

FROM History of Deism

Many of the leaders of the French and American revolutions followed this belief system, including John Quincy Adams, Ethan Allen, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison ,Thomas Paine, and George Washington. Deists played a major role in creating the principle of separation of church and state, and the religious freedom clauses of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution.

View Quote

The word "Deism" is derived from the Latin word for God: "Deus." Deism involves the belief in the existence of God, on purely rational grounds, without any reliance on revealed religion or religious authority

Deist does NOT mean Christian, Einstein.

Deists have a hard time swallowing the miracles of Jesus - Thomas Jefferson certainly felt this way.  Jefferson was indeed an atheist, but his friendship with Adams (a Unitarian deist) oftentimes moved him back and forth between deism and atheism.

Deists believe that God is no longer active in the world, and hasn't been for quite some time.  In other words, he got things rolling along, and then kinda left mankind to it's own devices.

Know your facts.

Just modify the Presidential Oath of Office slightly and we come up with a good pledge and ... exactly what mejames said.
