Well, I'm a patriot and a gun owner as well as an atheist.  Our founding fathers may have believed God was guiding them but they put a little something in the Constitution that we so dearly love that calls for a separation between Church and State.  And I for one totally agree with it.  Why should I have to preach to a God I do not believe in just because I want to show my patriotism?

When the constitution was written, I doubt that there were many athiest and those who were athiest probably kept it to themselves. The seperation of church and state issue is a non issue. At the time the document was written no one doubted that there was a god or creator. That became fashionable much later. God is not a religeon.The acceptance that there is a god or denial thereof does not make you a religeous person or define your specific religeon.

If you don't like the way the pledge is written or don't agree with it then don't say it. Just don't tell me I can't say it.

If the names "Christ" or "Budda" were opart of the pledge, then it [i]would[/i] be specific to particular religious beliefs &, therefore, unconstitutional. But "God" is non-specific. The phrase, "...under God...", was inserted in 1954. If this is [i]so[/i] offensive & [i]so[/i] important an issue to garner this much scrutiny, then why not simply remove the "offensive" phrase?

On the other hand, aren't all citizens' rights supposed to be [u]equally[/u] important & protected under the original (constitutional) framework? [i]Must[/i] the "offended" minority opinion supercede? And just where in the US Constitution is there a stated right to [i]not be offended[/i]?

The pledge is [b]not[/b] about forcing any religion upon someone. "God" is a non-specific reference to a nebulous creator &, in essence, is an admission that religion does influence social &/or legal constructs. For example, the legal distinctions utilized in discriminating between 1st, 2nd, 3rd deg. murder can be directly traced to the foundations of Judaic law, elaborated in the Old Testamnent of the Holy Bible.

Until yesterday, the pledge has been a carte blanche part of Americana & atheists have (at least in the past) somehow managed to avoid the stain of religious persecution &/or indoctrination. There would be no forfeiture of justice to expect the "offended" few to accept that theology (actually) isn't being forced upon them, stop crying wolf, & quit being a false martyr.

Umm, common misperception. Everytime I get in a discussion with a religionist it's always
"Einstein was religious..." or "Our country was founded on religion, Washington was a churchgoer..." - or some other statement that is functionally very very similar to "Rosie O'Donnell and Meryl Streep support gun control." - with the consequent implication that since certain folks had certain beliefs it *must* be good for you/nation, too.

Like liberalism, when you pump crap down for generations, it tends to stick in the minds & thought processes.

Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Mason, Franklin, and many others (including some great hard-charging as*holes like Ethan Allan) were not really believers. They may have made a courteous bow to some others' religious feelings on occasion or used the term "god" as a catch-all term implying whatever forces threw life together.

These men were educated folks and were trying to bring mankind out of the age of superstition. They had seen the depredations to individual freedom (and, for that matter, to members of other religions) that state-supported religions had created, and knew of the once awesome political power of the pope and Catholic church - Inquisition, etc. They believed in the power of logical thought, and that man could better himself; they were avid readers of Hobbs, Montesquieu (splg?)  and others who argued that man's fundamental inalienable rights were inherent to his existence.

The above, however, doesn't mean that some of our Founders were not religious, but that their religion didn't rub off on our founding structures, or that they were smart & decent enough to separate their beliefs from building our nation.

We're NOT an "anything" nation, and certainly we aren't a "Christian" nation: never have been, never will, and if it were moving in that direction, I'd be on a rooftop with an AR and my Rem 700LTR.

Deists have a hard time swallowing the miracles of Jesus - Thomas Jefferson certainly felt this way.  Jefferson was indeed an atheist, but his friendship with Adams (a Unitarian deist) oftentimes moved him back and forth between deism and atheism.

Deists believe that God is no longer active in the world, and hasn't been for quite some time.  In other words, he got things rolling along, and then kinda left mankind to it's own devices.
