How much do you spend on gun shipment as private? Its gotta go 2nd day air and lets say you insure it at $1000. So how much does Fedex or UPS charges you? Plus I assume you have to drop it at the hub only, correct?
I always ship handgun through my FFL and they use USPS priority. $1000 item insured and shipped worth $30. Plus FFL charges.
So as Norinco suggested, you can use Shipmygun, which comes to about $40-$45 for a $500 insured gun (not sure what it would be for $1,000, but probably not too much more). Shipmygun basically means you're shipping as an individual but using Bud's corporate discount. That's all it is.
You're right that if you just waltz into a FedEx or UPS shipping center, they will, at best, make you ship Second Day Air, which costs way more. Alternatively, I've seen a lot of people just ship handguns UPS or FedEx Ground, and just don't tell them it's a handgun. The risk here is a) if you're shipping interstate, it's technically illegal, but good luck for anyone to prove it, and b) you won't be able to get any insurance payout. But it'll only cost like $25 or whatever it is.
FFL shipping makes sense if you have an FFL that does reasonably priced shipping. My FFL only charges $10 for inbound transfers, but like $35 for outgoing (plus Priority Mail) so it's not really worth it.
