i recently got a lot of cfe 223 at a good price..so i bought a bunch of hornady 55gr fmj bullets.ive read conflicting info that the cfe 223 really dosnt work all that good with light bullets?i plan on using a bunch of mixed brass and cci 400 primers.any thoughts?thanks...also,i have 4 pounds of benchmark, would that be better?

It'll work, but it is true that CFE223 is a bit slower burning and prefers to be under heavier bullets (69-77+).

It actually works well in lighter .308 rounds as well.

The only reason people might say it doesn't "work" with light bullets is because there are faster powders that will make another 300fps.

At 100% loading density with the 55, CFE 223 gives these numbers.

If that 300 fps means nothing to you (for type of ammo you describe, it would mean nothing to me), go ahead and load a full case of CFE 223 with those 55's and have a good day at the range.

Go to Hogdons website and they list loads for their powders.  Im loading 27 grn of CFE 223 under a 62 grn and Im getting 2850 out of a 16'' barrel.

Same charge I'm using for my 62gr TBBC defensive handloads. It mimics M855 velocity from my 10.3" and didn't show any serious pressure signs with LC brass and CCI41s.

Great powder and fine for lighter pills if you aren't chasing velocity. I'm happy to use it for plinking loads.

I use it more than anything else. It is fine with 55s if you aren’t chasing velocity.

I'll go further and say buy more than one book.

internet based stuff, and apps are OK, but having some good books in the shop is best.

SIERRA

LYMAN

SPEER

HORNADY

buy them used on ebay or amazon if your budget is short.

I tried CFE in both 223 & 308. Couldn't get it to work well for me.
It was slow & inaccurate in my rifles.

I just tested a similar load. 26.9gr CFE223 under a 62gr Hornady FMJ with WSR primer. Velocity measured 2863 fps from an 18-inch barrel (10 shot group). Temperature was 45 degrees. I've read that CFE223 can show some temperature sensitivity and I have seen some velocity increases during warmer temperatures.

CFE works fine for 55 gr, but there are better options.

I have had awesome results with 25.8 gr of CFE223 and 69 gr SMKs, sub MOA in both my Barrett REC7 and MDRX when loaded on a Dillon 650XL.

With CFE .223 and 55gr and 62gr FMJ's I had to run it near max loading, following Hodgdons reloading data. Grab a copy of their newest book for 2021, its a steal at 10 bucks. Also, use their sites resources for good data as well.

One interesting thing I've noticed with this powder is that it seems to tighten up groups with stouter charges at/above book max. I'm not sure why thats the case and the normal caveats (every barrel has its preference) apply. But, I've found that to be the case across the board with 224 pills over 60gr.

I'll echo what's been said that it really does well at or a hair above max charges in my Hornady manual .

I've shot a lot of Cfe 223 in 55, 62 fmj and 77/75s.   I get it cheap locally and meters perfecto. The velocity gets there .
