I went on the hunt for a 1851, 36 cal steel frame , prefer Uberti and came up empty handed. My second choice was a 1858 Remington. 44 cal steel frame, again prefer Uberti and yes
no luck. The bright side is it gives me more time to decided what I want. Plus for the 1851 is the most common pistol for the Confederates but man I do love big bore guns like the 1858.
I do civil war reenacting and seen both . So the good thing is I got time to think about it.

I’m thinking Italy’s lock downs and high metallic cartridge prices happened.  Hope you find what you are looking for.

I heard there was a huge backlog due to Italy getting shutdown before and longer than us. Check Midway, they come and go.

Another reason why I will wait. I can find musket caps for a  fair price but no go on #10 and #11.
I do have some #11 CCI, about 300 which is not much.

Ive also got a pietta brass frame reb 44.

Bit of a different variant that the one u want but still a 1851 derivative. And its been a real tack driver,

I have always felt that uberti was a step up from pietta. For some reason.

But now that i own both brands i have to say my pietta is every bit as well crafted. The only 2 quircks i have found is that 1 the blueing on the pietta is thinner and more fragile (prone to wear) but its much older and a navy arms import so either of those things may be the reason. And 2 my uberti had the lacquer applied to the grips after installing the brass nut that retains the grip screw (brass nut was covered in redish lacquer) but it was easy to carefully clean off the brass nut.

After all the looking and researching I made a list of what I liked, fits my reenacting , close to what the real ones looked
and metal used.

What I wanted
1- a colt clone
2- a 44 cal to make more noise
3- a steel frame
4- close to what was used in Civil War

I came up with a steel frame Army 1860. It was the pistol of choice for the union, was also used by the confederal but not as much as the 1851s,
steel frames are correct, 44 cal is correct. Got it from Midway. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1023746770?pid=979686 Pietta was not
my first choice but I think I will be satisfied. Now I need the 45 colt conversion.

Stuff a .45 case with black powder and shoot it in a standard SAA until you find a C&B.

I shoot 45 colt now and do load bp in the 45 colt. I will be making some bp blanks.

Nothing at all wrong with the Pietta 1860’s!  I like them so much, I bought 2!  Have live fired them and also shot blanks in re-enactments.

There's at least one really nice option in the EE right now

Got the pistol. Timing checks out good. Half cock cylinder rotates free. Full cock can hear click right before full cock click. Full cock tight.
Cylinder gap seems tight as could not pass a dollar bill but does not bind when rotating. Will check with feeler gauges.

Next up when I get time is complete strip to clean. Did order Slix nipples and nipple wrench.

Will fill in notch on hammer,

Taylor's conversion cylinder was out of stock.

If you see some grey matter on top of grip it is from the box. Did not notice it till after pic taken and I picked up pistol. In all happy so far.
edit to say I hate the engraving on the cylinder. Thought it would come without it. Also all the writing on the barrel but I knew that going in.

I find it very difficult to find bp stuff in the EE. Can you give me more of a hint?

I got this in today.

It's tiny compared to my Remington New Model Army.

EDIT: Cleaned and new nipples. And a better pic of the case hardening colors.

Thanks!

My next one will probably be a 1847 Walker.

Never understood why they call them 1858 Remingtons. The repros are 1863 Remingtons.
