The outfit I'm purchasing my lower from is telling me that I need is the name of my trust, city and state engraved on it for SBR purposes.  I seem to remember a serial number needing to be on there too.  Is this no longer the case?  Would the serial number only apply if it were previously registered as a complete rifle or pistol?

there's already a serial number on it from the manufacturer, and it should be the one you used on your form.

That's what I figured, but I remember people on here saying they created their own serial numbers (or serial words in some cases) during the SBR process.  Was just wondering if something extra had to be added.

Those who created their own S/Ns probably did so on 80%ers...like I did.

Trust, city and state is all the is req’d.

A good reason to really think about the name of your trust.  "The John D Doe Revocable Trust, Any Town, USA" is a lot to engrave.

This.

While I knew to do so, my NFA-specialist lawyer recommended the same; as short as possible.

This.  Mine is my initials:  XXX Trust.  My real name is long and makes for cramped hands while engraving.

Same.

A funny OT story, I helped a friend draft his trust.  When he went to submit it, for the first time, he asked if I'd take a look.  He is an edged weapon fanatic but, not the sharpest one in the collection.  When I looked at his trust name "NaS Trust" I asked what it stood for?  He exclaimed "Knives and Suppressors"  I gave him the look and that is when it sunk in for him what he had done...

I have a long last name and "Revocable" in my trust name, as it was auto-generated by Quicken Willmaker Pro. Attorney who later reviewed it said ATF would not allow it to be changed and still considered the same trust.

The three initials of my name.

XXX Trust

Can't imagine anything could be shorter.

Don’t forget the ATF won’t allow you to engrave an AKA. So if your trust name is “Always Be Careful Trust, also known as ABC trust”, you can’t engrave “ABC trust”. BUT you can do the reverse. So if the trust name is “ABC Trust, also known as Always Be Careful Trust”, you can engrave ABC Trust.

You need:

Maker's name (trust, llc, or individual)
City/State where the Title II firearm was made
Serial number
Caliber
Model, if assigned

You don't need to remark any markings that are already present on the gun.

I made the mistake of purchasing several suppressors with a trust named XXXXXXXX Revocable Living Trust. The suppressors were my first NFA items and I didn’t consider engraving at the time. When I decided to start building SBRs I did so as an individual, primarily because at the time the CLEO in my place of residence was both my boss and a gun nut, so sign offs were easy (pre 41p obviously).

Then I moved and decided to create a second trust with a much easier name to engrave. I haven’t purchased or built anything NFA since 41p, I’m undecided as to whether I am going to stick with the trust or go back to individual registration. I’m planning on building a SBS and a SBR this year, or as near to this year as I can get stamps approved.

What would that matter? You're not required to engrave anything on Form 4 items.

It is, however, problematic when one decides to make some form 1 SBRs and has a trust with a lengthy name.
