Can anyone fill me in on the value of these rifles and production numbers.

One in particular is a .340 Weatherby magnum.

I'll bite.
If you are thinking of purchasing, my recommendation is PASS.  Can't speak for the older rifles but I ordered a custom Mark V a couple years ago.  On the outside the rifle looks great.  It doesn't shoot anywhere near accuracy expectations.  Sent it back twice.  They return with no issues we can see.  Send me a couple fake computer generated targets to back up their claims.  Reality, Weatherby is all hype and if you have to purchase ammo for that 340, it's gonna be painful!

That is disappointing to hear.  Like OP I have been interested in the Mark V Deluxe and was looking at eventually getting one in either 378 or 460 Weatherby.

Here are some borescope pics from a brand new Weatherby Mark V Custom for you...  That Weatherby says is acceptable.

I can't speak for others but my Mark V in 6.5 RPM shoots like a laser beam.

That's at 200 yards.  1st 3 shot group after zeroing at 25.  1/2 in at 200 yards from a sporter weight rifle using Weatherby factory ammo.  Its also deadly as hell on deer.  This one was 425 ish yards.

I love my Mark V and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

The one in question was built in 1978.

So here is the story..
My son is selling a motorcycle. A offer was made to trade rifle for motorcycle. But have no idea of the rifles value.
Son is trying to figure if it is worth the trade, or if the guy needs to sweeten the deal with some cash as well.

Jap mark V's are the superior mark V's. They are great rifles but a bit overpriced because of the name and the fact they have beautiful wood stocks. That means a lot to some buyers. The 340 why caliber is great for anything big game, recoil isn't so bad but the one thing to watch for is the grip area at the receiver tang and down the pistol grip of the stock for cracks.

I'd put a trade in value towards something for around $800-$1000 if you really want it.

I have 3. Late 70s to early 80’s models and they are all superb rifles in terms of ergonomics, fit, finish, and accuracy. It may be Weatherby has gone down in quality like so many other companies who were known for quality. An older model I’m sure your GTG abut they are expensive to feed in the WBY Magnum calibers. Even the brass is expensive. Probably worth getting a set of dies if you buy one and reload

My Mark V Deluxe in .300 Weatherby was inherited.  Original owner family member bought it new in the late '60s. Barrel was made by Sauer in West Germany.  It shoots sub MOA three shot groups with my handloads.  Opens up to about 1.5 MOA if the thin barrel gets hot.  First shot from a cold barrel is dead on.  Always.  Which is what you must have for a hunting magnum.  FYI the scope is its original period-correct El Paso USA Weaver V12 4-12x with adjustable objective.

I have 14 Weatherby Mark V Deluxe rifles in the following calibers, 224, 22-250, 240x2, 257, 6.5-300, 270, 30-06, 300, 30-378, 340, 338-378, 378, 416, and 460.  All Left Hand except the two Mark V Varmintmasters.  A mix between Wyoming, Japan, and German.

The Sheridan Wyoming Weatherbys are the best, followed by the Japan guns and the German ones are last.  I don't have any of the Southgate or Paso Robles CA guns.
Metalwise the German and Japan guns are the same, but the wood is much nicer on the Japan models.

Is the nicer wood on the Japanese models just due to the production time period?  I thought the Japanese and German Mark V's were just barreled actions or barrels and that everything else was done at Weatherby's US factory.

Just put a Mark V Deluxe in 378 Weatherby on layaway.  I'll probably pay it off in a month or so.  Once I have it in hand I'll give feedback and thoughts.

I have 2.  One in 300wm (1987) and one in 240wm (2019).  Both super accurate.
