She's 5'4, about 110 lbs and consequently, not very big. I was looking at Estwing, Tops Knives, SOG, Hogue, Condor Tool and Knife. She told me she wants it for the "zombies" or incase she runs out of ammo in her VP9. Of course her having me wrapped around her finger, I'm prone to indulge her.
I know nothing about hawks and axes, so does anyone have an suggestions? I'm not looking for an uber high end ax, but I don't want something thats going to fall apart on the third swing. |

The Estwing is about as unbreakable as they come.
That said, I have a SOG behind the seat of my second truck and a Vaughn 22 oz hatchet under my primary truck's seat. |

Well, whatever's gonna scratch the axe itch
She's not gonna use it, so don't feel bad about going cheap ($40 is cheap for an axe) I'd go for a 16" CAS Hanwei, but that's probably just me |

Zombies?
IMHO, having a light hawk that you don't throw out your shoulder messing around with once every 6 months is going to be the best bet. I'd get CS trail hawk, grind the hammer into a spike, and grind a little "hook" in the bottom of the blade to make it less square. In the pic below the top is a regular trail haw that has its top edge sharpened. The bottom is the same thing that has been ground to make a "hook" as well as turn the hammer into a spike. Attached File If, on the other hand, she'll be using it for camping, I'd just get a proper hatchet. |

I have had a bunch of them.
Sog is pretty tough but lost an edge quickly. Estwing is my least favorite. There isn’t enough mass in the head compared to the rest of the body. All the cold steels are good to go. With a little love they can look and feel awesome. Also you can remove the head from the pole. Like a real tomahawk should. I like the CRKT Freyr. The edge needs some love but it’s pretty sweet for a bearded hawk. If this is something you don’t think she will actually put in the time to learn how to use as a weapon than I would just get a SOG tactical tomahawk or Fasthawk. There simple, tough, and inexpensive. Edit. Like others have said if it’s going to be used for camping a hatchet will serve much better for processing wood and basic camp task. |

I have the Eastwing, and it's an amazing thrower. Sticks every time.
It might be too heavy for her. If you drag it on your shoulder, it'll make a nasty gouge. |

My kids like the SOG. The Estwing just didn't feel well-balanced.

2Hawks makes a real nice tomahawk in several sizes.

A good starting choice for her size and weight would be an SOG Fasthawk. Get a kydex sheath made for it though as most sheaths are not very good. It should be about $20 to $30 and they come in colors and some cammo if you take time to look.

Timely thread as I'm looking at a few tomahawks myself. Buy her a nice piece like the Two Hawks Woodsman tomahawk. It's a nice size for someone of her stature but has some controllable heft to it. I just bought a Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet for a stupid price (I wanted one for many years), but I'm still looking for a tomahawk to mess around with. I think I might go with the forged hammer poll tomahawk by Beaver Bill Forging Works.

Estwing leather handled Carpenter's hatchet.
Spikes are cool and all, but a hammer head is more useful. OR you can get some real shit going on... https://www.amazon.com/4000340-Cold-Steel-War-Hammer/dp/B00HTN4LQ0 |

If all she(and you) cares about is that its hip and trendy. Then yeah just buy something new and cheap. But if you have basic wood working skills I recommend buying a vintage axe head, specifically a Hudsons Bay pattern. Polish it up and hang it on a new handle. Then she will have something to value. Here is the Norlund I did up. https://s15.postimg.cc/3oommy7h7/IMG_2167.jpg View Quote |

I'm going to grab one of these for myself as it's a "cheap" version of RMJ's Jenny Wren: https://www.bladehq.com/imgs/shop-by-brand/all-crkt/CRKT-rune-2737-BHQ-51822-er-large.jpg For something more "traditional", I would recommend getting a Cold Steel Frontier or Trailhawk, strip the head, sand/smooth and varnish the handle for a very functional tomahawk. The Cold Steel Trail Hawk is my favorite of all my hawks, because it’s light, fast and lively in the hand. With a few modifications, it’s the best deal going as far as I’m concerned.

I vote trail hawk or if you want something a little nicer out of the box a H&B forge polled hawk.
