The 14.5" grip is probably a folding grip with something inside (like a bearing or piece of bolt) that prevents it from folding. I purchased a real non-folding grip for mine.

My 13.8" (now sold) also had a matte gas plug.

Why did Steyr make the change in length?

The 14.5" barrels they made in the last year does not require the port to be drilled at the awkward 45 degree angle, and also can easily be pinned to a non-NFA 16" with a standard AUG muzzle device.

The picture was taken in my Team's sleeping area in Sheriff 20 safehouse

The gun is an Aussie SASR support cat (radioman's) issued gun.  I was bored and borrowed it to play with.  At the time, I knew very little about AUG's and had no idea this was a Aussie special forces issued only AUG variant.

The original Austrian 13.8 and 24 barrels are 13x1 LH threaded chrome lined hammer forged and also both have 1/7 twist but for very different reasons.

The machine that made them broke.

There is effectively no relationship between the original Austrian 13.8 barrels and the recent US made 14.5 barrels which are nitrided not chrome lined and 1/2x28 threaded and with a 1/9 twist.

The reason the 13.8 had a 1/7 twist was to be absolutely sure of stabilization despite the short barrel even at extreme altitude (Austrian Alps) and extreme cold.

the reason the 24 had a 1.7 twist is for tracers in the SAW or LMG role.

Mainly I was just REALLY happy to finally find a true early 90's 13.8" barrel, it was pretty much the last piece I needed to complete my collection, save for an ADI imported A2 receiver!  (If anyone has a lead on one of those let me know!

I used to have one but I sold it sometime ago sorry about that. It was perfect too absolutely perfect and it went for way below market value I was really bummed about that.
