Well said....I have turned down a few write "deals" to say the least. My reviews at the end would probably never make it to print anyways. In the area of NV articles/reviews, I have only seen ONE article that was very well done. That was from Jeff Gonzales about 6 months ago in a G&A/Surefire magazine. While I did not agree with some of his illuminator range claims, his NV tactics and training are good to go. Jeff is an awesome instructor and a former Naval Special Warfare group type of guy! |

I think they're just parroting what the company has said... Unfortunately it doesn't appear the product actually lives up to the claims. What is sad and a little pathetic is that the "investors" over on the yahoo mb don't see a problem with that. They think it will "find its niche," which it very well may but it doesn't seem to bother most of them that the product isn't what it was touted to be by the company in which they are putting their money (i.e. better than Gen 3 night vision). Some of them get pretty vicious about it. Oh well not my problem anymore. |
| No surpise the SuperVision is not as nice as gen 3 I think everyone here pretty much new this from the start. My ?? Is it really usefull and prvide a good enough image for 150 yards and under for commerical market? Is it better than say the bushnell digital stealthview mono? Not everyone is going to battle and I know alot of people who could give around a $1000 for watching wildlife, home security and such, but $3000 for a PVS-14 would get them a divorce fast. I think us guys that have the real deal gen 3 stuff forget how pumped up we were when we first looked through a good gen 1 or gen 2 unit. I had a basic MX9916 tube mono as my first NV scope and boy did I think I was badass night stalker. Sure it's nothing on my newest gen 3 thinfilmed stuff but it was usefull and I had lots of fun with that gen 2 mono. |
You modified it how? Also are you using some sort of tripod to support the thing? IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA |

The suits over at Yahoo are really bashing Victor. messages.finance.yahoo.com/Stocks_%28A_to_Z%29/Stocks_X/threadview?m=te&bn=26510&tid=19768&mid=-1&tof=17&rt=2&frt=2&off=1#-1 messages.finance.yahoo.com/Stocks_%28A_to_Z%29/Stocks_X/threadview?m=te&bn=26510&tid=19770&mid=19770&tof=14&frt=2#19770 Maybe it's because their Stupervision Stock is going down; WAY down. |

Your picking the worst of the worst on that board, about 80% of the posters on the board can't tie there own shoes, the remainder are more serious investors/traders, most know nothing about what they are typing about. Victors review was very well done and comprehensive, my initial tests with my own SV paralleled Victors but with some modifications it easily goes beyond what comes in the box. I can't help thinking that the company knows its performance limits, I suspect it can see considerably farther especially with IR. Its definatley not a tube but it may be able to do things a tube can't. The whole comparison may be a red herring. Example: I can take out my SV in the middle of a bright day and look 1000' up the block, I can look up the same block at 12 mid night and with/without an IR see whats going on. I havn't been able to test it in a real dark area yet, but will soon. |
You'd be better off spending $150 at Walmart for a Russian unit and then combining it with Da Torch (which you have to buy anyway to make Stupid vision work in the dark). I STILL dont see a niche that this thing fills nearly as cheaply as products already on the market. I keep coming back to the motivations of the company. Either they know their way around night vision, in which case they KNOW they are blowing smoke, or they dont know night vision, in which case.......... |
I think we should settle on a name for this "gadget". Should we call it Stupervision or Stupidvision? I know stupid is more gramatically correct than stuper however stuper rymes with super. Besides reading the manufacturers exagerated claims will leave you in a stuper. |
|
Stupid is the people that actually believe Stupidvision's vaunted claims without either doing the research themselves, or believing professional, unbiased folks like Victor who did. I'm sure it has its uses, in the same vein I guess a Barska or Leaper scope may have its uses. Just like buying a cheap scope, even if your expectations are adjusted accordingly (don't get disappointed if it doesn't do what a Leupold, US Optics, NFS, S&B can do), in the end it's still a pos, the cost of which could have been a sum going towards the purchase of the real deal. Shame on Stupidvision for the outright skewed and manipulative comparisons. Fortunately we have folks here like Victor and Pete to call their bluff. |

This morning a friend droped off his ITT 160 gen111 marine mono. for me to play with. Tonite I turned off the lights and pulled the curtins in my office and turned the 160 on and it is like green magic, I never used one before, its just about pitch black and I can plainly see where ever I want, although this unit is kind of like looking through a door peep hole in a way, Victors PVS14 pictures seem more balanced, not slightly pulled on the sides and slightly stretched to the center, just slightly. I turned the SV on and after it has a second I can see detail but it needs help, it has to refresh, so I turn on the torch and its all there just about real time, its just slightly off real time, a tenth of a second? Now I put one up to each eye and selectivly look through one at a time. The 160 has a surreal quality to it, but you can see real time where ever you want, SV is slightly magnafied but it has a more real look to it, its a wide rectangle with no distortion, black and white. I then went down the block to the cemetery, it over looks an anchorage and then a 1 mile long island aprox. 3/4 mile from the cemetery, tonite it is a light over cast sky, with street lights behind me. I again have them both on and one up to each eye, I can plainly see with the 160, every thing seems a little farther away than it really is, I can move my head and its real time, like looking through a pipe. they both present the scene as a strange subdued day light. When I look out at the boats unaided it is dark and I see little, through the scopes I see detail like it is a strange day light and this is where SV has an edge, the 160 is 1x , SV has up to 8x and it makes a big difference, I can look out into the anchored boats and see real detail out to I estimate 1200' with SV, at that point I know what kind of boat it is and I could see people in motion, not at all to recognition at that range, plus I could look further out to the island 3/4 mile away and see the outline and some detail of the trees on the shore, this is all with no IR and there still is this slight delay, but I see plenty, The 160 in all fareness is only 1x so I can't compare it magnified, but in the 1x and SV starting mode they see the same things in the dark but its different. As Im walking back to my office I have them both on and one up to each eye, the 160 I can walk with, its like looking through a kind of tunnel but I can walk with it, no problem, fine detail and real time, the SV is not as easy to walk with, its not real time, just that slight delay, the darker it is the more refresh delay there is. I have to tell you I like them both but for slightly different reasons and functions, for close up and real time feed back I like the 160, for observing and long range I like the SV. What I have described is each unit as is out of the box, I have to tell you I have some modifications for SV that allow it to read a license plate at about 400', (and I think I can get it longer) and all around improved visuals, I have been able to minimize some of the graineyness in high magnification, I will be able to field test it next week and I will write about it at that time. |
| From the viewpoint of field operations I found the SV unit useless if not dangerous to the operator. A field operator cares only about one thing--does the equipment work as fast as the operator and is it effective. In the case of the SV,no. Personally I could care less about high speed bells and whistles that don't deliver on demand. If I can't see that wonderful digital image the moment my eye engages the eye piece the unit gets tossed in file thirteen. I have several issues with the SV. As it currently stands, it is a high speed, high tech, exspensive t*@d. Thank you. From a "Stand-up Kinda Guy". |

| Thanks I will, its been very over cast here and I know looking over the water also enhances the units with reflected light. I havn't been able to get a feel for the ITT 160 with the 3 or 5x lens, Ive been getting use to looking long with the SV. I had dinner with a lady friend last night and I brought both units, after dinner she closed all of the lights in the house and we went into a bathroom with no windows, I brought in the 160, I couldn't see her but all I heard was oh my god, this thing is amazing, and then she turned on the 160!!! All kidding aside we could still see, although muted. |
Better break out your neck cord because you don't want to drop it in the water like IPSC Guy's friend did.............. ![]() BTW ,it survived the 15 ft plunge! |

Hey Victor, do you follow trends in the camera industry much? I wonder how much longer before we start to see products like you reviewed that actually preform up to par? Just look at some of the steps taken in the DSLR arena. Nikon's new flagship camera (D3) can shoot full color 12mp images at ISO 25,600. Thats not quite to gen-III levels (nor is it at a non nausea inducing 30-60 fps either) but its also at 12 million pixels and subject to moors law. I'll be interested to see where we sit in the NV field in 5-8 more years. |

I have been testing the SVM for the past 5 weeks, i.e. through a complete lunar cycle plus. One point to mention up front in the interest of full disclosure is that the specific device I have been testing is the same unit which Victor used for his testing. I sincerely thank him for sending me the device to satisfy my curiosity, or gluttony for punishment, depending on one’s perspective. Another disclaimer is that a software patch is available from Xenonics, which has not been applied to this specific unit as of yet. The intent of my report is to provide another independent assessment of the SVM’s capabilities. My testing has been limited to very dark indoor environments, and suburban outdoor environments; a total of 18-20 hours has been spent behind the device. In the dark environment, the SVM is quite simply blind without an active IR source. When any of my multiple active IR devices is employed, the reflections can be overwhelming. If there is one thing that the SVM is really good at, it is active IR source identification. To qualitatively describe this environment, a PVS-14 will scintillate even at lower gain without an active IR source, but one can still see through it. The minimum focal distance of ~12’ and minimum magnification of 2x precludes use of the SVM for any form of navigation or arms reach high dexterity tasks. The device was not designed for this type of operation. Moving on to the substantially higher ambient light suburban environment for which the SVM is supposed to thrive, the results were again not particularly favorable. While the display is relatively high resolution as compared to other digital devices, it is still not good enough for character recognition past about 30-35 yards at any gain or magnification combination. In such cases, the naked eye or a high quality day optic can actually perform better. The flaring from light sources of either the visible or IR spectrum cannot be understated. There are a few specific points that I would like to elaborate on: 1) It was not particularly highlighted in Victor’s report, but this is a manual focus intensive device if I have ever used one. Whenever one changes range to target, zoom magnification, or gain mode, one must also manually adjust the objective focus to achieve a relatively clear image on the display. There is a fine line between in focus and out of focus; this aspect of operation is extremely operator intensive. 2) Battery discharge time for my testing has been quite consistent with the previously reported 1.5 hours. One thing that was not discussed previously is battery recharge duration. Through multiple full discharge/recharge cycles, I measured 4.5-5 hours recharge time with each of the two batteries provided. What this means in the real world is that one would need 5-6 batteries at $24 each to provide continuous operation throughout an entire night without an AC power source available, or 4 batteries and 2 dual chargers if AC is available. 3) Victor uses the term “white-out” for the effect exhibited when light sources are present in a environment containing any significant contrast. I prefer the term “flaring”, but to each his own. The bottom line is that one cannot effectively see in the shadows when a light source is present, and one cannot see much at all if a light source is not present. In general, Victor’s original report should be considered very thorough, detailed, and most importantly accurate, in my opinion. The only criticism would be that he is overly generous as to the attributes of the SVM; it must have taken an awful lot of effort to produce images as good as he has with the device. A tripod certainly was part of the equation, as handheld operation is difficult at best, particularly at higher magnification and/or lower light. I suspect that I will also be criticized for my observations, but can only suggest that anyone considering purchase of an SVM compare it firsthand with conventional image intensification before making a decision. |
| I played with one at SHOTSHOW and it ws godawful compared to my PVS-14. Maybe thats not the target market, but I can't imagine using the Supervision for any night ops. |

| The coolest part of the unit is when you try to get it to focus down to a normal distance for reading something the front lens unscrews so far it falls off. That and the need to spin the focus knob more than 360 degrees every time you want to see what is 3 feet in front of you and see something more than 10 feet away. |
