Thanks for the updates Victor.

I've always said, these digitial nightvison gadgets, rely heavly on active illumination in dark environments. One thing i must comment on. The digital NV gadgets seem to be able to see further up in the near IR spectrum than even gen 3. The reason i say this is becaue the Yukon DNV, I've messed with, comes equipped with 2 built in 960 nm illuminators. Using a 960mn illuminator, you can see quite well in the dark with these units.  Victor showed this in his indoor demo with his 805 nm torch.

Victor. I'm willing to bet that if you have a 940nm led light, Supervison will outshine conventional NV(even gen 3) in this regard. That being said, this thing overall, has nothing "really useful" for LE, military and survivalists applications. Maybe a PI can find something like DNV useful; as he can power it off his cigarette lighter or an AC outlet to record survailance video?

Why not just use a Sony digital camcorder with nightshot and super-nightshot? better lenses, higher resolution, and recording capability. plus no power issues. I use mine all the time with a 12v. xenon spotlight and a 6" glass military IR filter to watch wildlife, 25x optical + 15x digital zoom. A P.I. could easily watch a subject at 300yds, or more with the screw-on 3x telephoto lens.

Just an update that the final reviews will be posted next weekend where I will be collecting the final rural no moon pics and then giving my final merits and non-merits of the SVM. I was going to post the semi-rural half moon pics that have been completed first, but I think it’s best to post both these reviews at one time.  By the way, contrary to some other post out there, there WILL be 200 and 500m distance shots as well! These have already been collected.

Also, I’ve been getting lots of emails and IM’s pointing me to links of what folks are saying about the reviews.  I’ve not had much time (as you can tell) to look at much, but some have been pretty interesting to say the least!  It has been interesting to note though, that some of the readers out there really think I have not talked with the Xenonics folks.  From my first visit there, to my phone calls to their engineers and emails from their President, we have been in correspondence.  As you know, I actually updated a section on the main review from our correspondence. They have thanked me for my thoroughness and have given me technical details not listed in the manuals the normal public would not know about which actually helps everyone.  This IS a new product in which some other forum folk seem to forget, so some technical aspects I review is not just common-place knowledge known, as this is the reason we’ve have corresponded on the SVM.  Thanks,

Thanks Vic!
What an extensive and eye opening review, everyone suspected (you, Pete and others actually knew) the photos on their site were unfair and biased, yours review I trust completely.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, the FPS issue.  If you have a digital camera, take it outside or anywhere  that's bright, look at the LCD (not the small view finder), and move the camera in an arc quickly.  Observe the tiny amount of delay between your movement and the image being displayed by the LCD.  If you move slower, the image on the LCD keeps up, if you move fast, the image appears jerky.

Now go to a dark room and do the same thing and you'll notice the delay is very pronounced, the movement is jerky.  If there's a delay, it's not in real time.

Humans eyes can detect no more than 30fps, anything more will go unnoticed, anything less, our eyes will know it.

Due to its 20ft minimum focus and the FPS issue, you sure as hell can't use it while driving like Pete had mentioned.  When they say "up to 30fps", if you noticed the image being jerky while moving the SuperVision around, it ain't 30fps, close, but not 30fps.

1paintball - Thank you for all your time and effort with this review, I know that you are walking a fine line with this situation, and I think spreading out the installments of your review is a good idea, perhaps it lets the impact of your assessment sink in a little more slowly, with regards to the stock situation. The smart people are already taking heed. Can`t wait till next weekend! Thanks again!!!

Victor:

I think to really compare the two units, you should compare them for the task that the .mil really intended PVS7's and -14's for: moderate moonight, tree cover, and no illuminator. If the SV can't do that, it doesn't have a hair on it's ass.

I believe human sight is 24 fps, BBC broadcasts at 25 fps and US at 30 fps.

Great job Victor.

Thanks for the final installment of your photo comparison, as anyone who has gen III+ equipment knows, the pictures don`t do it justice (as Vic clearly explained) the supervision did better than expected, considering that in low light it is only capable of fixed operation (tripod mount) if supervision were $500.00 or less, it might be worth the money, even at $1200.00, I would rather have a D300 ms gen II+ (I have four of these type scopes) any way, no serious NV enthusiast would take Supervision seriously. Some People will read into the photos what they want to see, the stock traders are thrilled with the performance comparisons:

PCN2200- (27cyble) posted on xnn-yahoo forum: - reviewed the additional pictures that Victor posted this morn., and I gotta say that SV seems to be hangin pretty tough. Think about it , a $1400.00 device is holding its own against $4000.00 top grade military devices! There seems to be some clarity issues at higher mags. but for the money it looks good to me. I await my own SV and IR torch to give my own impressions.
and this:

gloverpark2 - these new pictures put SV head to head with PVS-3x (Gen 3 NV), and a bit a head of it with IR illumination. Only D-760 6x looks to have better pictures, but performance gets closer when you attach an IR illumination to the SV.
It may have a use in urban situations as a novelty( watching the neighbors in their hot-tub at night?) In my opinion, If you buy one of these, you have bought an Edsel.

Company claims aside, what other digital or tube device compares with supervision? I have researched most of the advertized commercial/retail units, say under $1000.00 and I havn't found much in the way to compare, most are very limited FOV and limited viewing distance for the MONEY. In my opinion this may be more about a business model, think about all of the guys that would like to have an aproximation of a gen 111 tube unit but aren't as dedicated as most of the guys on this site and may not have the scratch to afford it. These guys have boats go hunting maybe even want to look at there big boobed nieghbors wife in the hot tub at night, but they are part time NV junkies. I don't know if any of  the guys on this site would  buy a supervision but I believe in the market place supervision may have a place. And as for Victor, I can't belive the time and effort he has put into this review, dedication and honesty will always be recocgnized, thank you Victor. I should recieve my supervision tomorrow, hopefully along with my Torch so I can see for myself.

First of all, yet another big thanks to Vic for putting in the extensive time and effort for this review.

To be honest, the images of the SVM are better than I expected, but then again, they can't show the herky-jerky of targets in motion under reduced lighting.  Pretty sure that most folks don't use their NOD's on a tripod, but rather mounted to their cranial protection unit or high impact firearm.

The price point for the SVM seems improper.  For $1400, one could get a Gen2+ D-300 plus some accessories, and end up with much better performance.  The suits over on yoohoo are bragging about how much money they are going to make with the 70% sales margins; if one reverse accounts the math, then the price point would be proper at about $400 for this novelty toy for ameteurs.

It is encouraging to see advancement in technologies, but this doesn't appear to be the Holy Grail in any way, shape, or form.

From the images in Victors review, I can tell you that this gadget, with the exeption of  having variable magnification, is no better than  my friends Yukon $400.00 digital mono.

Ya know I am betting the profit margin on the supervision is insane so it's no wonder they are pushing this thing soooo heavily. I am sure the little bean counters have figured out just how many they have to sell in order to break even and thus pay for the Hype they are trying to create around their stock. it's almost like we have been taken in here that we have devoted ANY time to this.

Thank you Vic for all the work but I am done even thinking about supervision.

One Yahoo skirt seems to have some good sence.

Cut and paste....

Well, my hope would be to provide a view point that is, how shall we say informed about what is going on here. I do not think it is a good investment. Lots of hype from this company has surrounded the release of this product and unfortunately it is not what the company said it was going to be??? Am I wrong here.

All of the above posts saying the reviewer does not know what he is doing? Did any of you look around the rest of that website? He has years of information covering many aspects of night vision as did a number of other posters there. In a couple, hours of reading their posts I got that that they are a near obsessive bunch who love the subject. As such they were the perfect subject matter experts to take a critical look at this.

Proof is in the pudding as it were, and because the reality of the Supervision is that it is less than advertised and I choose not to risk my money in it I am told

"GO AWAY"

that is rich.

Lost Son

I wonder what the Silver market is going to do the rest of the week?

Thank you for spending so much time on this Vic! Especially for a product that you probably won`t be selling! I think you were very diplomatic about the whole thing, and actually cut Supervision a lot of slack, you could have taken it and the PVS-14 up under some heavy tree cover with no moon. (ouch!!) Thanks for the review Victor, it was very helpful and informative.

One thing I'm a little unsure of is why so many people seem to be saying that this device was never intended to be a "night vision" device.  Am I missing something?  I pulled this quote directly from the supervision website:

"SuperVision’s™ performance exceeds military-grade (Gen III) night vision in every aspect: greater resolution, better clarity, longer range and the most significant factor of them all, zoom capability."

Clearly your results show that supervision most likely underperforms Gen III night vision devices by a wide margin, no?

I just recived the Supervisoin to T&E for my dept. At present we are useing PVS 14's, & 6010's. tonight is the first night I have played eith the supervision and to say the least about this product I am not impressed and would not use it for LE work. The magnification is a cool feture if if worked and you could get a clear image with it out to the 8x. The system even up close does not read license plates and without an additional light source it is very hard to make out faces. As I said we just got it today and I am going to try some other stuff out tommorow but if it is anything like tonight it is going back to the company way before the 60 day trial period. For know I will stick with the ITT stuff

I'm assuming because they gave you(for your dept) the device on a trial basis, you won't be hit with the 20% retocking fee. From what I've gathered, they give folks a 7 day trial period. On the 8th day, they hit you with a 20% restocking fee.
7/19/2007 3:31:33 AM EDT
[Last Edit: pd7575][Edited] [#40]
I was not told of any restock fee and I guess if they want it they can go ask the City for it but I do not see them getting it. If I had to pay 20% for this thing I would be pissed.

Just on a side note I really do not post in the NV spot that often so if I am steping on toes or out of line with what I am talking about someone give me a heads up so I do not make an ass out of myself. Thanks

IMO, you are not out of line at all. We appreciate informed honest opinions; especially from professionals such as yourself.

From what I can tell, Stupidvision = gen 1+, MAYBE 1.5 under certain conditions. But it had plenty of bad points too (blacks out during certain operations?!?!?!?!!!).

Well took it out for a second try and all I can really say is it is going back in the AM. I think if you are looking for something to play around with and have alot of money buy it. If you are looking to buy it and expecting a Gen 3 or even Gen 2 you are SOL. I guess buyer beware you are not going to get what you paid for.

I must give it to Victor he did a great review on this product and I can say that the pics he took with the SV are way above what the average person is going to get from it useing it as a hand held system.

Is it just me, or do they appear to be using an IR illuminator for some of those Supervision pics, and not the -14?

I'm no expert, I couldn't tell you tech specs....I just use the shit.  Anything beginning with a PVS that is.

ETA: Awesome review Victor, I wish I knew 1/10th of what you've forgotten about all this stuff.
What's up with that guy? He's a complete meatspike. It's like every time he gets behind the wheel he turns into a total moron and goes "Durr I'm driving a boat (drool)"

I was in 7-11 last night and saw a magazine that was doing a review on the SV it is called tactical weapons and I guess it was there first issues (since it said permer issue on the front), but they gave this product a great review saying that is was going to change night vision and for the price it is the cats ass and this is why I do not buy gun and police mags

Vic, would it be worth adding one more pic to your already extensive review so that less informed folks who might read it can better understand the consequences of using active IR?  Maybe a shot of an operator using the SVM with Da Torch taken through a PVS, from the appropriate not-directly-looking-into-the-light angle of course.  Just a thought.

Shorting any penny ante stock can be as risky as f$%#ing a West African prostitute!  The fact that XNN has been spending ridiculous $$$ on FALSE advertisement for the past 3 quarters at least, without selling, or delivering for that matter, any significant quantities of units proved that it was a dog.  It was only a matter of time until they actually had to get units into the informed public's hands, and the king was overtly shown to wear no clothes.  Vic's review, as thorough and extensive as it has been, is primarily stating the obvious shortcomings.

As someone who has done articles for other types of magazines, I can tell you that you can get a magazine to print just about anything you want with the right article author. Magazines don't care as much about truth in their reporting as they do paying the bills, so to piss off a current or potential advertiser with an unflattering review is not a good idea.

The other thing I learned over the years is that frequently the author that is distributed the gear to do the review isn't qualified to make objective remarks about it.
