I’ve been told for close to a decade that you can’t suppress 3rd gen S&W pistols because of the odd barrel taper and have since sold my 5906
Well...

No doubt. I've said multiple times he does incredible work.

I’d be interested in the extension with wrench flats and not teeth. I’m curious if teeth were used for a reason

I'd be interested in this for a few of my pistols that have those funky bulged ends on their barrels.

Now I’m 5906 shopping.
I wonder if you can put a RMR on the slide...

I was thinking as I clicked on this thread that I'm sure Nick would be able to suppress a 5906 if he wanted to.... Low and behold.

I'm not sure why, but the 5906 always struck me as a cool pistol, the news that it is suppressable and actually makes a good host, has rekindled a bit of interest. I might need to keep an eye out for deals.

Because flats, squares or hexes look wonky when they're not timed.  The 12 scallop design looks fine no matter how it's oriented.  It also allows a smooth shoulder with a smaller maximum diameter/thinner profile.  It's designed to be removed or installed with 12 point wrenches or sockets, 11/16" or 17mm in this case.

The reason for the reduced diameter section of the barrel just behind the muzzle on the S&W pistols, Kel-Tec pistols and others is for barrel removal while still having sufficient diameter to engage the barrel bushing.  It serves no other purpose, and that purpose ceases to exist when there's an adapter that has to be removed before the barrel can come out anyway.  I turn away the "bulge" and thread behind it with very fine pitches (usually 40 TPI)

The threads on the S&W barrel show some chatter because I used a tool post milling attachment I made with a single point thread mill rather than turning them with a conventional static cutter.  It allows me to better control depth and skip the undercut, since I rotate the chuck by hand with the half nuts engaged while the thread mill cuts.  I use the same process for cleaning up damaged receiver threads like this Kimber receiver I just did, in which the thread crests were absolutely mangled:

That's badass!  What's the cost to perform this work on a 3rd Gen S&W?  And is it the same price for other "bulged" barrels from Ruger, Taurus, etc.?

The funny barrel profile is only to let the barrel tilt in/out of the frame for assembly.  No reason it can't be removed and the barrel extended with a removable extension.

Hopefully I don't piss off the powers that be here by listing a price........

These are a little bit more involved than a typical thread + extension job, so they'll be $135.  In cases where I have to open up slide faces (usually micro pistols), $150.

I can figure out a way to make threaded adapters for most pistols

I take it this could be also done with a 3913 as well?

If so, hello modern day ASP!

1980's spy-gun modification to the Smith and Wesson model 39. The ASP's and the Devel's were the king of custom compact 9mm's.

He did a similar thing with the direct thread adapters on my recent 22LR & 9mm F1 cans, since both are completely tucked inside rails and I wanted a way to retrieve them if needed.
