Decided to give it a go....

ready

Base Tan

OD Stripes

First go with the sponge...

Should have stopped after the OD over the tan tonight due to crap lighting, but couldn't bring myself to stop.  Going to wait until the morning to see what I've created... hopefully it wo'nt be too disasterous.

To me...there is no way to screw up.  If you don't like it,,,do it again.  I like your colors and pattern.  Simple blends of colors.

okay i'm about to take the plunge tomorrow and camo my rifle... i just can't believe the paint can hold up to the high temperature of the barrels and in my case, giant gas block.

am i going to be smelling paint every time i shoot and have to worry about chipping, cracking, peeling, smudging? the one mention in this thread says it's not a big deal but it seems crazy to me considering how hot these rifles get.

Did up my SPR this weekend. I might go back and add a little color later. I like it for now.

...It's snow covered outside, so I have no idea how it will blend in out in the wild.

I really appreciate all the information in this thread - far & away the best "how to" anywhere.

Stock below belongs to a Stevens Model 34 - both barrel & butt are shortened for a child. Did the original metal work & stock work 30 years ago when our son turned four. Just redid the stock for our granddaughter who'll be four in a few weeks. Tried to match both her bicycle & her Barbie doll house.

The prior finish was dark stained wood with a poly seal coat so the first step was a wipe down with prep sol. Then four coats of PlastiKote 466 Gray spot filler-primer, rubbed out with a fine Scotchbrite pad between coats. Next came four coats of PlastiKote FL-8 fluorescent pink enamel, also rubbed between coats. Took one day for the primer & pink base coat. Next day was sponge applied white, then black, then a bit more white. Sealed with two coats of satin polyurethane.

Thanks for the tutorial!
Did mine today, took about 2hours with drying time.

Started with a pardner protector, didnt want to screw up an AR first time out.
What do you guys think?

Seems a bit more homogenous in terms of color mixture than some of the others where the striping is more pronounced. Still a nice job though. I need to stop being lazy and carve up a cardboard box to make a spray box and get one of my rifles done up.

Pardon my ignorance...

I'm looking to paint my AR, (Still debating on color and pattern) but I have a Knight Armament Upper, and a friend told me I should not paint that because then the logo and verification would be gone....

Reccomendations?

Tape it off and don't paint the markings? Don't paint it if you are planning on selling it in the future?

For what it's worth, the only markings that really count, legally speaking, would be the serial number on the lower.

I have sponge camoe'd 6 rifles and all of their serial numbers remained legible.

Found an online camo generator. Been playing with it to get an idea for some different color variations.

http://www.happyponyland.net/camogen.php

Here's the colors I'm thinking of using for my AR, using striping though, instead of splotches, and a lot more frugal use of the "Terracotta'ish" color.

Basically, base coat with the "khaki," striping with the "desert brown," sponge "desert brown" onto the "khaki" areas, sponge the "sand" onto the "brown," and give it an all over sporadic and light sponging with the "terracotta."  ETA: Possibly some smaller bordering stripes of the sand along or inside the brown stripes?

Settings I used:

Polysize: 100
Color Bleed: 2
Colors: D4CD9D  786351  A8A37D  59400E

Spots: 5000
Radius: 10 10
Sample Var.: 10

Pixilize
Ammount: 10
Sample Var.: 20
Density: 1000 1000

I personally don't plan on selling it, but the guy was saying I should still keep the writing that designates it s a knights armament upper visible...

As for the serial number, got it. I saw a bunch of pictures so I wasn't too worried about that. Mostly concerned about the upper and whether it matters.

Just did my Draco.  PX didn't have a "natural" sponge, so I used some fake ones I swiped from the wife.  I cut them up and used needle nosed pliers to tear up the surface and break up the edges.

Not sure if I like it yet.  I'll get it out in the woods and see how it blends after it dries some more.

Still gotta do the mags and the VZ wire stock.

well, I finally took a swing at doing the krylon and sponge treatment with my SBR. It's currently hung up in the closet for a 24 hour cure. Did a khaki base, OD striping, ran out of khaki so switched to desert tan for the sponge work over the OD, and OD sponge over the khaki, then finished it off with some sparse earth brown and coated it with a matte clear acrylate. Even did the mags for it. If I can remember, I'll try to get some pics of it posted tomorrow but my memory for remembering to do stuff like that sucks.

[Last Edit: Loremsk] [#23]
Hey look, I remembered to take some pictures! The rest of the carbine is hanging in the closet while the second layer of acrylic dries, but I snapped a pic of one of the mags and the buttstock before giving them their second coating.

Didn't come out quite the way I wanted, but I blame that on my inexperience with the sponge technique and suddenly running out of one of the colors part way through the project.

ETA: Something I noted, the Krylon OD was much darker when dabbed on with the sponge than when sprayed on.

ETA2:  Fin.

As said, not quite the look I was going for, will try to do better next time.

I originally painted my AR with the pine needle method, then I decided to switch it up and combine it with more dark colors and use the sponge method with it. I am pretty pleases with the outcome, it looks even better in person and outside.

Base coat of Rustoleum Khaki:

Adding in the Krylon Camo Brown & Green:

Added in Black and Khaki sponge patterns, I went light on both:

Clear coated with Rustoleum Matte Clear Coat:

Sorry if this has been asked, but I didn't read every post on all 10 pages.

How does the Krylon hold up on the AR and AK barrels after they heat up?

Been hesitating so long to be able to post in this thread but busted out the rattle cans today and gave it a shot!

Rustoleum Camo Khaki, Deep Forest Green, Earth Brown, Black, and Matte Clear
Wal Mart Heavy Duty laundry bag (has big mesh pattern rather than small, even though my mesh barely came through after I was done sponging, may sponge through mesh some next time)
Pack of sea sponges from Hobby Lobby
About two hours including reassembly and photos

That Multicam job looks great!  Nice job.

Here is a black kydex sheath done in Krylon Khaki and Rustoleum primer.  Matches pack much better.

Hey guys. Posted a previous rifle of mine a few pages back, and I did my new one yesterday. Now, it's just an airsoft gun, but it's set up just like how I plan on running a real steel AR sometime down the road. I'm sure you guys don't mind.

Also pictured is my H&K licensed MK23 SOCOM gas-blowback airsoft handgun. A video of the process I used can be found here.

Here is my first attempt at a jack of all trades camo for around here. It's not perfect but I like it and it will do just fine for what I need it for.
