Are Berdan pockets larger or smaller?  I ask, because I wonder if you could just rework the hole, drill a center primer hole, and install a regular large rifle primer?

Not that I would, unless I had berdan brass (not steel) and times were extremely tight.

How is that tool used?

I looked at doing it about 10 years ago, a real pain in the ass unless it is last resort.  At one time you could buy Berdan primers and hydraulically remove the spent primer but I don't think you can even find them now.

If I still had a milsurp bolt gun I would give these a try

Tried it, but not cost effective for me as I have plenty of the correct Berdan primers for 7.62x39.

Berdan primers are not standardized, there are many sizes. You need to measure your primer pockets to get what will fit.

For instance you could seat the low pressure primers I use for 7.62x39 into 7.62x54R and have problems with the extra pressure.

The drilling part goes well as this is a high quality tool.

When I bought mine last spring, had problems with ordering and site took my order to only have order cancelled due to OOS a couple of days later.

Never got an answer to my emails.

Eventually persistence payed off and I got the tools.

This would be a good tool for the larger Mil sup rounds.

edit to add,   Nowhere on that site does it tell you the size of the sleeves other than S, L, XL.

Notice I wrote the measurement down on the sample bag.

Did those rings work otherwise?

I had converted my own in the past and made my own rings from first copper then brass tubing from the hobby store.

Kinda labor intensive but I've got several 1989 yugo 54r cases that are on the 10th( FL reload) and show no signs of failing.

I found a brick of I think 57 size shot she'll primers, I think they were before the  now standard 209 size. The 57 are smaller diameter than the 209.
I drilled out some brass 762x54 cases  for the 57s and used a light cast load in them. They worked fine with cast loads.
