If you had to choose between owning either shotguns or .22lr's, which would you choose and why?

After much thought, between the 870 and Marlin 60 I currently own, I believe I would have to choose the .22. As versatile as the shotgun is, I just feel that I would find the .22 more useful than a shotgun.

You are still permitted to own other firearms, but only either .22lr or shotgun, but not both. If other firearms weren't permitted other than shotguns or .22lr firearms, I'd then choose the shotgun.

I rarely shoot either, but if I had to choose, I think I would choose the 12ga.

Sure 22's fit in the role of a quiet hunting small game  caliber, but I dont hunt much.
12ga on the other hand, cant hunt most small game and with slugs, some bigger game like white tail deer.

I can also shoot trap and other flying disk sports with it.

I can fire 2 shots in the air to ward off burglars

22. you can carry a lifetime of ammo in a pocket. You can also shoot birds with it. you just wait for them to land

All you guys choosing 22 have got to be kidding me! A shotgun seems to be clear choice. Birds, deer, small game, recreation. I've never seen a shortage of shotgun shells.

absolutely and during the last ammo shortage, shotgun ammo was everywhere.  22's were gone for over a year.

Sure. Gone from stores. But a 50dollar bill and some word of mouth and anyone could have 22 ammo in no time.

For me 22lr. And I love shotguns.   But a suppressed 22 I will never be without.

The only shotgun I even own is a Sears and Robuck 20ga (its a winchester of some sort).

Personally I chose a 22lr over a shotgun because for me it feels more roles. I can use 22lr to teach my kids and wife how to shoot, it as much less recoil, ammo is MUCH smaller and lighter, it will kill small game easily, its quiet, easy to suppress, and in a pinch it can be used to hunt larger game. I own a rimfire suppressor, even without the can a 22lr rifle is still much more quiet than a 12ga, especially with sub-sonic ammo.

A decent 22lr rifle is gonna outshoot a 12ga with slugs out to 100 yards all day, everyday. Of course a 12ga would be a better firearm for bear or birds in flight but I don't hunt birds and I have never even seen a black bear in the wild...

.22lr for me. I own 7 or 8 22's in various configurations, and a single solitary shotgun. The rimfires get a workout on a regular basis while the shotgun has been fired in, oh, 3,4 years maybe longer.

I can't hunt Dove with a .22. Shotgun sports are extremely fun. Shotgun all the way for me.

I currently don't own any 22LR's, although I have only been a gun guy for 18 months. 223 is scratching the small bore rifle itch for me. No children old enough to shoot yet.

Both in a combo gun, and the combo gun would be a LeMat revolver in .22 LR in the 9 shot cylinder and .410 in the secondary barrel.

If this was some apocalyptic world and I only had a choice between a 12GA or a 22lr I would definitely go with the 12.  You can defend yourself against humans and large animals (deer, black bear and close range elk). You have versatility to take down big and small game.

Now if I lived out in a rural area I'll still take the 12GA over a 22lr. I see it as much more versatile for what I need keep myself safe and put food on the table.

As someone who has used the same pump shotgun for deer to turkey, geese, ducks, and grouse. A 12GA can do much more than a 22lr IMO.  My 10/22 is good for plinking around and popping little varmints around these parts.

I would dislike being without either. I don't hunt so their only real value to me is fun at the range. I have other guns for HD. In the choices above I took the combo gun, which I do have 1 of.

Shotgun... because food doesn't stand still when you're hungry (Murphy's Law).

That's why you prepare. stack away a case of 22lr and forget about it and you'd have enough ammo to barter/get through tough times for a good while if regulated as such. "Birds, deer, small game, recreation" 22lr will handle all of those with a good shooter and shot placement.

is it the end all be all? nope but will it get er done in a pinch? sure will. pump 10-20 rounds of cci velocitors into someones chest and they will either cease doing harm or expire.  How many deer are poached with 22lr? tons. Add a suppressor to the mix and you have a force multiplier.

Now luckily we don't have these restrictions and this is just a hypothetical question so sky is the limit.

For pest control around the house, a .22 was generally the preferred option, with CB rounds for maximum quietness.
In an apartment these days, so no need for that role. The shotgun is much better for hunting, and there’s no quiet shooting in the back yard when you have no yard.

If I had to pare it down to just one firearm, that one firearm would be my M6 Scout.  .22/410 combo gun.  Owned it twenty years and it would be the one they'll pry from my cold, dead fingers.

I can shoot most of a day with a watch pocket full of .22 shorts. It is one of the only .22's I've owned that can send heavy 60 grain Aguila SSS rounds without tumbling. Those give a goid thump down range. Also sends Stingers accurately.

The .410 bore does Ok at short ranges with shot, but the 3" 1/4 oz slugs are deer accurate out to 60 yards and carry the same thump as a .41 mag.

Savage 24 in .22LR/20 ga with chokes.  If you only have one, each can hunt just about anything, might not be the right tool all the time however.  In NC you can legally hunt deer with a .22 short. Only restriction is no full auto.  Texas allows hunting turkeys with a rimfire rifle.  In a survival situation, game laws are going to be forgotten/ignored.

I'd personally be fine with having a just a shotgun. Much more versatile in my opinion for hunting, more enjoyable to shoot, despite the cost increase. Plus I can have many options for shooting sports. 12 gauge all the way.

If relegated to just one firearm, a shotgun would be a great choice, with the variety of loads available to them, it's the ultimate survival firearm imo.

[Looks at six .22s in safe that I shoot almost every week]
[Checks under bed to see if mice have made a nest out of my shotgun anytime in the four years since I last looked at it]

I believe I've made my choice

I own way more shotguns than .22's---both rifles and handguns combined

So shotgun for me.
