Soooo, Ive been thinking about doing another Short Barrel Shotgun. This time on a Lynx 12 (think Saiga 12). Ive been looking at 8 and 12 inch barrels; but I think I actually want the 12" to make it look more balanced (like a AK). I found this pic in an old thread here. Its an 8" but with a muzzle break and I wont be using a break so the over all length should be about the same. https://i.imgur.com/xwnNpMi.jpg Ive got other Short Barrelled Shotguns, 870s and SxSs; but no semis. To be clear this will be a fun gun but Id like to think it will have some tactical potential/usefulness. Thoughts? |

Big time fan of the Saiga 12 platform. I have both a 10" and a 12" in the range your considering. Also have a 7" and two 8" guns in the works. A good deal more work on those short guns. Both the 10 and the 12 are excellent shooters. Mild recoil and both run without issue with 1200 FPS 1oz loads. (slugs and buck) 1 1/8 oz in shot loads. I run the autoplug on both. Gas systems at the same length on both guns. The 10" has 3" of barrel in front of the gas block. 3 3/4" of tube between the front trunion and the gas block. The 12" has 5" of barrel in front of the gas block and the same 3 3/4 of tube length. The gas blocks are moved 2" closer to the chamber, both guns. The 12" has a muzzle device. I converted it with a JT magwell and run modified 5 round Saiga 12 mags. They drop free with release. Stock rock and lock Saiga 12 mags on the 10". Bolt carrier also the same in both guns. Both use 1.5" extensions off the bolt carrier. The gas port sizes are four ports at .078 if memory serves me right. Slightly overgassed so the Autoplug can do it's work. Both handle 1600 FPS stuff without issue except your shoulder. Thank you Autoplug. Thought this info might help with your decision making. Just some options and the main ingredients.

I have approved Form 1's for my two SaIga 12's but have not made them yet. I did research the lengths, and found several threads regarding length and at what point you need to consider relocation of gas block. Here are a couple links.
