I picked up a pawn shop Rossi in .44-40 for a steal.  Probably because it's in .44-40.  I reload and cast, so I'm not too worried about the caliber.  Anyway, it has a 20" barrel.  I really like how light the '92 is and given it's not a power house cartridge, am debating chopping it to a 16.5" barrel. Anyone done similar?  Any known issues or reasons not to?

I think it would make a nice, short rifle to carry when hunting with the kids for follow up shots, tracking, etc.

Thanks for any thoughts.
Gus

Class 3 machining is who you seek from what I’ve read.

I think it’s a great idea. Get it threaded while at it.

I have a 16in 44mag Rossi, it's a great size and super light.

Shortening is $$ on round barrel lever guns, consider just buying a 16inch unless you are attached to the 44-40.
