I am getting ready to ship off my SP5K to have a B&T barrel installed.  It will be the receiver only; no bolt carrier, trigger group, etc.

Do I need to tell UPS that it is a firearm?  Is it still a pistol (needs overnight)?  I am seeing some conflicting information on this topic, mainly concerning stripped AR lowers, with some people saying they ship the USPS and call them 'machined parts'.

I know some of you guys have had this work done, so what did you do?

The SP5K receiver is a firearm receiver and it is a pistol.  As such it must be shipped as a firearm regardless of its stripped status.  Calling it machine parts sounds cool, but if it gets lost in the mail, the shipper will not reimbursed your loss.

Ship UPS or FEDEX. It’s a handgun and only FFLs can ship handguns through USPS.

This.

It also must be sent overnight.

It will be cheaper to have an FFL ship it USPS.

There's no law that states it has to go overnight.  That's company policy and they may or may not enforce it at your local hub.

USC (atf) and USPS rules are not the same. They have different definitions.

I ship everything certified mail if its a "gun" as UPS and fed ex will fuck you over

For me yesterday shipping a pistol, I had 2 choices:

UPS pick-up with special driver to my house - $99

Drop off at my FFL, have them log it in, then ship to buyer's FFL: $64.99

They are pretty much unified now. USPS uses the USC 921 definitions.

A SP5K stripped is a firearm receiver (not a handgun). It is  "capable of being concealed on the person", and thus cannot be shipped USPS unless FFL.

I ship firearms fairly frequently. My local FedEx hub allows me to ship handguns regular “ground” if I separate upper slide/receiver from lower and ship separately and avoid the “next day air” BS.

All good info, thank you.  I will see what my UPS location says about overnight.

Just an update, hopefully helpful to others.

I was able to ship it as a firearm receiver via UPS ground.  I had to show them that it was an incomplete gun.  I was honest that it was part of a pistol, but incapable of firing.

I’ve had good luck with ship my gun.   It’s inbetween overnight and FFL pricing.
